Im Mittelalter wurden alle Ehen arrangiert, nicht nur die des Hochadels. Das bedeutet: Die Väter suchten die Ehepartner für ihre Söhne und Töchter aus. In einer legitimen Ehe wurden zwei Familien- und Verwandtschaftsverbände und Teile ihres Vermögens zusammengeführt. Zweck der Ehe war die Fortsetzung der Genealogie und die Weitergabe des Erbes. In den Eliten spielten zudem politische und soziale Gesichtspunkte eine Rolle: der Wunsch nach Statuserhöhung, Ausbau der Herrschaft, Sicherung des Friedens nach längeren militärischen Auseinandersetzungen - in diesen Fällen waren die Bräute eher Geiseln -, Anknüpfung oder Festigung internationaler diplomatischer Beziehungen, politischer Allianzen und Nicht-Angriffspakte oder auch Pflege formaler Freundschaften. Manche politischen Allianzen wurden durch Kreuzheiraten und Doppelhochzeiten mehrfach abgesichert. Einzukalkulieren war ¬freilich der ¬ökonomische Faktor in Gestalt steigender Anforderungen an die Brauteltern für die Mitgift.Auf diesem Hintergrund betrachtet Hedwig Röckelein im zweiten Band der Kleinen Reihe der Barbarossa-Stiftung einige der Heiratspläne und Eheschließungen der Staufer. Im Zentrum stehen dabei die beiden Ehen von Friedrich I. Barbarossa mit Adela von Vohburg und mit Beatrix von Burgund sowie die ehelichen Verbindungen der Kinder aus Barbarossas zweiter Ehe.

Das Thema "Hexen und Hexenverfolgung" wurde während des "Dritten Reichs" im Rahmen einer Auseinandersetzung zwischen Vertretern der Partei und kirchlichen Autoren instrumentalisiert. NSDAP-Chefideologe Alfred Rosenberg behauptete in seinem "Mythus des 20. Jahrhunderts": Auf den Papst der katholischen Kirche, Nachfahre des etruskischen Zauberers, "geht ... unsere mittelalterliche Weltanschauung zurück, ... jener Hexenwahn, dem Millionen des Abendlandes zum Opfer gefallen sind". Die Kirche konterte in einer Gegenschrift zum "Mythus": "Der Hexenglaube (ist) in der germanischen Tradition selbst zu Hause. Auch das Verbrennen der Hexen ist altgermanische Sitte". Most of the remaining speakers of Celtic languages live in the British Isles, in Wales, northwest Scotland and Ireland. Until the Anglo-Saxons began settling in England in the 5th century, Celts were spread throughout Britain, but today almost all that remains of these Celts is place-names derived from early Celtic. Almost all, because we know from classical writers of the 1st century BC that the Celts of Gaul venerated watery places like lakes and rivers and deposited precious objects there. This book traces the Celtic use of watery places from the Late Bronze Age, around 1000 BC, to the Roman period (43 AD - 410 AD). Christian Celts did not deposit precious objects in rivers and lakes, but they did build monasteries on islands, especially in Wales and southern Scotland. Meanwhile the Scots, following a tradition established in the Iron Age, buit crannogs, dwellings on artificial islands, in some of the many lochs of Scotland. From the 7th century the Anglo-Saxons also established monasteries on islands or near watery places. In 1066 the Anglo-Saxons were replaced by the Normans and holy wells proliferated, perhaps inspired by models in France.
