Für das 16. Jahrhundert gilt: Köln ist und bleibt katholisch. Mag die Reformation auch das gesamte Reich und weite Teile der europäischen Christenheit erschüttern - die "heilige" Stadt scheint davon nahezu unberührt. Warum war die Entwicklung in Köln anders als in vielen anderen Reichsstädten? Der französische Historiker Gérald Chaix nennt Gründe für den Sonderweg und schildert katholische Reformversuche in der Stadt. Doch nicht nur die konfessionelle Auseinandersetzung prägt das 16. Spatial Futures invites readers to imagine power and freedom through the lens of the 'Black Outdoors', a transdisciplinary spatial concept that operates beyond the planetary, stratigraphic confines of the 'Anthropocene'. The chapters collectively point to the ontological-epistemological contradictions involved in forging liberatory spatial futures. Bringing new spatial imaginaries to bear in and outside geography, the book refuses the strictures of the 'cenic', entertaining difference as world-making.

Insurgent Fandom offers a behind-the-scenes look at a transnational subculture known to few--ultra. As the most dedicated soccer fans, ultras support their team through collective singing, jumping, flag-waving, and lighting marine flares. While some characterize ultras as hooligans, author Max Jack argues that ultras' performative style of support is in part a protest informed by the ultras' constant friction with the state, the mainstream media, and the commercial priorities of sports' governing bodies. Because of this conflict with authority, fandom for ultras takes on a collective social life in which the game on the field often becomes a secondary concern. With political implications extending past the realm of sports, ultras have even become key actors in some of the most significant mass protests of the 21st century-including those in Cairo (2011), Istanbul (2013), and Kiev (2013). Insurgent Fandom embraces this politic of dissent at the heart of crowd action and casts a light on stadia as a breeding ground for alternative social and political possibilities.

This book explores the advantages of a linear model of planning in reducing regional inequalities. Linear planning, commonly discussed in the past as a method which plans the development of the city, is completely redefined here in the form of a design approach inspired by projects shaped by linear routes, such as cycle or walking paths. Such concept is applied to the urgent topic of territorial marginality which specifically neglects rural and mountainous areas and recently is coped by European and National policies. The analysis of these policies demonstrates the necessity of alternative strategies equipped to deal with both the internal and external causes that determine the critical conditions in these fragile environments. By implementing the concept of linear planning in these contexts, this book proposes to enlarge the perspective of traditional policies contrasting the regional inequalities that usually determine the design of projects just within the boundaries of the marginal areas. Cycle and walking paths are experimental cases of linear planning as they have not been influenced or formed by political boundaries and therefore are able to equally involve both the central and marginal zones. This book presents a review of current issues such as regional inequalities, with attention to their related policies, as well as an analysis of the concept of linear planning as seen through the study of one of the most famous cases of a walking path-the Way of St. James in Spain.

In diesem Buch erfolgen aus sozialkonstruktivistischer Perspektive eine qualitative Repräsentationsanalyse sowie eine quantitative Rezeptionsanalyse der drei US-amerikanischen Serien Gilmore Girls, Desperate Housewives und How I Met Your Mother. Die Autorin untersucht zum einen, welchen Einfluss die in den Serien gezeigten Landschaften auf die Wahrnehmung US-amerikanischer Landschaften durch die Rezipient*innen haben und stellt zum anderen heraus, inwieweit durch die dargestellten Landschaften Idealbilder konstruiert werden. Im Zentrum der Rezeptionsanalyse steht die Korpusanalyse entsprechender Fan-Foren. Untersucht wird, wie filmische Texte, insbesondere filmische Landschaften, in populäre Diskurse eingebettet werden.

Der Band ist das Ergebnis einer öffentlichen Lehrforschung im Kontext eines internationalen Echtzeitarchitekturfestivals in einer Plattenbausiedlung im Osten Deutschlands. Circulation is common in Third World countries and involves reciprocal flows of people, goods and ideas. The essays in this volume, first published in1985, discuss concepts associated with circulation in its various forms, and they present empirical evidence based on field work from holistic, ecological, social, and economic points of view. Contributions from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and the Pacific come from an international group of authors representing a variety of disciplines in the social sciences. All who are concerned with social and economic development need to recognise the importance of circulation at all levels of society and polity.

By zooming in on urban localities in India and by unpacking the 'meaning of the local' for those who live in them, the ten papers in this volume redress a recurrent asymmetry in contemporary debates about globalisation. In much literature, the global is associated with transnationalism, dynamism and activity, and the local with static identities and history. Focusing on a range of locales in India's metropolitan areas and provincial small towns, the contributions move beyond the assertion that space is socially constructed to explore the ways in which social and political relations are themselves spatially and historically contingent. Using detailed ethnography, the authors highlight the vitality of place-making in the lives of urban dwellers and the centrality of a 'politics of place' in the production of power, difference and inequality. The volume illustrates how urban spaces are increasingly interconnected through wider social and spatial processes, while local boundaries and group-based identities are at the same time reconstructed, and often even consolidated, through the use of 'traditional' idioms and localised practices. All contributions relate detailed case studies of everyday activities to a range of contemporary debates that highlight various spatial aspects of cultural identities, economic restructuring and political processes in India. The volume provides an interdisciplinary perspective on urban life in rapidly changing political and economic environments. It offers a contribution to policy-orientated debates on urban livelihoods and urban planning as well as a wealth of ethnographic material for those interested in the spatial dimensions of urban life in India.
