'As much a history of the deeply crooked culture of Italian politics as it is a vivid biography of one man' SUNDAY TIMES'Fascinating' SPECTATOR'Vivid and disturbing but utterly compelling' DAILY MAILCorruption, sleaze and violence were woven into the fabric of twentieth-century Sicilian life, as the Mafia rose to dominance. This is the story of one man who stood in opposition. In 1986, the largest Mafia trial in Italy's history took place in Sicily: 471 men and 4 women took the stand, accused of horrific crimes. Sitting in the gallery was Leonardo Sciascia. One of the greatest European writers of the twentieth century, he had published the first Mafia novel, The Day of the Owl, in 1961, and was widely seen by Italians as a true moral figure in a country where corruption had seeped into every corner of public and private life.Sciascia had come of age as the Mafia grew to prominence across Sicily. Witnessing the scale of corruption and violence, Sciascia predicted it would soon spread north, and he was right: by the 1980s, the Mafia had infiltrated every level of Italian politics and grown into an international, highly successful business. In A Sicilian Man, prize-winning historian and biographer Caroline Moorehead charts Sciascia's life against the rise of the Mafia, and lays out the thrilling and devastating struggle that ensued for Italy's soul.'Magnificent and deeply affecting' PHILIP HENSHER'Vivid and knowledgeable... Brisant. Ohne falsche Scheuklappen. Hochspannend.

The stunning blood-soaked saga of a real-life Godfather—Don Carlo Gambino—the quiet gangster with a whispery voice who struck fear into his enemies as he rose to the top of the Mafia family ladder, told by an insider who lived in that world, knew those families, and met Gambino face-to-face . . .

He was one of the four Mafia leaders who inspired Mario Puzo’s The Godfather—and perhaps, next to Lucky Luciano, the most powerful Mob boss of them all. Born into a mafioso family in Sicily, Carlo Gambino came to America illegally as a stowaway in 1921. Jumping ship in Virginia, he joined his cousins in Brooklyn and the Sicilian gangs that ruled the streets. By 1931, he was a soldier in Joe “The Boss” Masseria’s war with the Castellammarese clan, a bloody rivalry between Old World crime families that ended with the creation of the Five Families system by Luciano. Over the next three decades, Gambino rose higher in the ranks after a series of brutal Mob hits and executions. In 1957, following the murder of Albert “Lord High Executioner” Anastasia, Gambino took over—becoming the biggest crime boss in America.

This is the life and times of an underworld legend. Packed with shocking details and firsthand insights, Carlo Gambino: Boss of Bosses is the definitive account of this real-life Godfather, written by someone who grew up in that world and met Gambino personally. Author Frank DiMatteo’s chilling recollections of his encounters with Gambino add a rare human dimension to one of the greatest crime sagas ever told. It is the story of a quietly understated Mob boss who allegedly orchestrated some of the Mafia’s most infamous hits—including the barbershop shooting of Anastasia—but who miraculously served time only for tax evasion. For better or worse, Gambino’s story is the story of America, filled with ambition, fueled by greed, and riddled with bullets.

Having turned away from the organized church, a young man joins the Army, where he repairs helicopters and receives orders to perform an assassination for the CIA. Later, while trying to rededicate to the Lord, he is ostracized from ministry work and becomes an investigator. In 1994 however, he flees Indiana after corrupt informers frame him for a crime that never occurred. After the FBI cleared his name, the agency commissioned him as a street agent, specializing in detection of assassination plots, crime rings and industrial espionage. He soon discovered that many criminals working for the government are using their status as informers to further their criminal enterprises, and elements of the organized church are in collusion, at least indirectly. As an FBI agent, he prevented unconstitutional stings targeting militias, and after resigning, nefarious agents tried to kill him but failed, instead covertly keeping him under subjection via "blackballing" for two decades.

“Truth is always stranger than fiction. . . A stunning, riveting and extraordinary real-life story of life in the shadows." –#1 International Bestselling Author Don WinslowThe gripping true story, that reads like fiction, of how legendary FBI Special Agent Martin Suarez went deep undercover—and lived a double-life for years—to infiltrate Colombia's most insidious drug cartels.Martin Suarez, a legend within the FBI who specialized in Colombian drug cartels, holds the record for the longest time spent continuously undercover. As his alter ego Manny, Martin followed the unspoken rules of the cartels: He knew the right lingo to use, the right whiskey to drink, the right watch to wear, the wrong questions to ask. He smuggled over $1 billion worth of cocaine into the United States for the Medellín Cartel and, as his cover deepened, he graduated to become a high-level money launderer for the North Coast Cartel. He helped wash tens of millions of dollars worth of drug money, ensnaring himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse while simultaneously exposing the Black Market Peso Exchange, the most insidious money laundering apparatus in the world that involved billionaire bankers, blue-chip American corporations, and even the President of Colombia himself.Martin was raised by a father who served in the military and valorized the nobility of the FBI, and Martin stopped at nothing to allow his father to live vicariously through his son. He wanted nothing more than to make his father proud—and to be a good husband to his wife, and a loving father to his two young sons. He became a man caught between two worlds—that of an undercover agent who wanted to rid the world of its evils, but also that of a family man who was trying not to lose himself in this dark, brutal underworld that captivated the globe during the War on Drugs. And yet his worlds begin to collide as danger creeps dangerously close to his doorstep when his cover is blown and a cartel-hired sicario comes hunting for him.Inside the Cartel is told with the pulse-racing action of a Hollywood blockbuster. This is the story of Suarez and his time undercover and how maintaining the trust of hardened criminals can start to tear away at even the most principled soldier.
