This catalog accompanies the exhibition “ART & FASHION” at Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation on 18th April until 21st June 2026 and highlights the inseparable relationship between art and fashion in the Gulbenkian collection.

This catalog accompanies the exhibition Art & Fashion in the Calouste Gulbenkian museum, and highlights the inseparable relationship between art and fashion: art finds a constant source of inspiration in fashion, while fashion finds permanence and memory in art. Both disciplines engage in a dialog around beauty, both ephemeral and eternal, as an invisible thread between past and present.

The extraordinary Gulbenkian Collection, with pieces from Ancient Egypt to the 20th century, allows for a unique encounter between masterpieces of painting and decorative arts and iconic haute couture creations. It is not a question of comparison, but of establishing visual and symbolic conversations: contemporary silhouettes alongside Renaissance folds, exquisite embroidery juxtaposed with modernist flashes, ancient iconography reinterpreted.

The book captures that moment when the museum is transformed into a living space where art and fashion face each other, reminding us that beauty knows no boundaries, only the passage of time.

Alexander Girards Imagined Worlds examines a modern design luminary whose collection of global folk art and vernacular forms informed his expansive design practice. The book focuses on the Museum of International Folk Art, its displays and archival collections, and Girards Santa Fe years, as a locus for the designer-collectors wide-ranging practices. From his home and studio in Santa Fe, Alexander Girards work had international reach and profoundly impacted modern design. Lavishly illustrated, this book explores through thoughtful essays new facets of Girards design production and folk art collection, underscoring the inseparability of the two and culminating in his exhibition Multiple Visions: A Common Bond at the Museum of International Folk Art. By reflecting on selected displays, providing cultural context and highlighting artists and traditions, the publication offers new ways of approaching Girards legacy.

Spectacular environments play a prominent role in Niki de Saint Phalle's unique oeuvre. The walk-in Nanas, the Stravinsky Fountain in Paris, and her Tarot Garden in Tuscany are masterful examples of this. Her last completed major project in Hanover became her artistic legacy: the grotto in the Herrenhausen Gardens, redesigned according to her plans. Built in 1676 as part of the Baroque gardens, the grotto, originally decorated with shells, crystals, glass, and minerals, once served as a summer retreat. It was restored for EXPO 2000 and subsequently redesigned by Niki de Saint Phalle in her characteristic style. This completely revised new edition of the 2003 monograph describes the history of its creation and restoration and highlights the art-historical significance of the grotto from today's perspective.

Essays bilingual (English/German) / Catalog raisonné monolingual (German) Friedrich von Amerling (1803-1887) was one of Vienna's most important portraitists. His oeuvre reads like a who's who of the 19th century. He received commissions from the Habsburg court, the Austrian nobility, and the haute bourgeoisie, because no other portraitist could blend realism and idealism so aptly. In addition, throughout his life Amerling studied his own appearance in a series of self-portraits and portrayed many of his fellow artists. He became particularly popular for his depictions of young women, and stories circulated about little clues inserted into their costumes. Amerling's approximately 1,200 paintings are collected here for the first time in an illustrated catalog raisonné. Several essays discuss the painter's outstanding artistic talent, his life, his models, his collection, and his residence. Celebrating the cultural significance and clarity of vision evident in Northern European art of the fifteenth through the eighteenth century

This book features Dutch, Flemish, Early Netherlandish, and German paintings and works on paper from the fifteenth through the eighteenth century, including preeminent names such as Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt van Rijn, as well as lesser-known artists such as Sebastian Stoskopff and Johannes Verspronck. Illuminating one of the finest collections of Northern European art in the United States, the book traces the histories of ninety-five extraordinary paintings and drawings, shedding new light on the artistic significance and material properties of these objects. Works of art that emphasize the humanity of their subjects—and the capacity of oil paint to render these qualities almost achingly real—is a throughline that unites the paintings featured here, from the tender gaze of Rembrandt’s Portrait of a Boy (1655–60) to the freshly cut flowers and curious insects in Rachel Ruysch’s Nosegay on a Marble Plinth (ca. 1695), to the recently conserved masterpieces Adam and Eve (ca. 1530) by Lucas Cranach.

Distributed for the Norton Simon Museum

Today, artists set about a contemplation of architecture with a heightened ecological and social interest. Their works often reflect in a playful and humorous way as they scrutinize living spaces and lifestyles. The exhibition publication brings together around 100 works from five centuries: Paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculptures from the collection are juxtaposed with video works and installations by contemporary artists. They deal with architecture as anthropological self-description, as a stage or an archive of social, economic and political conditions, collective and individual history, and utopias. Zurich's Kronenhalle restaurant is a world-famous icon of gastronomy. This is the only book comprehensively featuring the Kronenhalle art collection.

One of the major achievements of modern art has been the depiction of people. Italian artists developed new strategies in drawing to visualize people. While 15th-century artists worked mainly with silverpoint and pen, new drawing media soon emerged. They made it possible to better understand people and their outward appearance, and even to penetrate the realms of emotion and feeling. A selection of 100 sheets from the plentiful Munich collection of nude, garment, and head studies from the Renaissance to the 18th century is presented here. The works show how the artists of various Italian artistic regions and epochs chose their means of drawing to convey an individually characterised image of humanity. Two of the greatest collections of Rousseau’s work come together in a new exhibition that offers fresh insights into the painter’s art and life

The Barnes Foundation is home to the world’s largest collection of works by the self-taught artist Henri Rousseau (1844–1910). Many of them were bought by Dr. Albert C. Barnes from the Paris art dealer Paul Guillaume, also an avid collector of Rousseau’s works. This publication offers a comprehensive study of the eighteen works at the Barnes and places them in dialogue with works from around the globe, including those from Guillaume’s collection (now housed at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris). This unprecedented overview of the artist’s work reunites paintings that have been apart for more than one hundred years, marking the first time that works from the Foundation’s galleries will form part of an exhibition devoted to Rousseau.

Working closely with Barnes Foundation conservation staff, Christopher Green and Nancy Ireson consider Rousseau’s novel artistic practice and explore his process of adapting works to new purposes. They also examine how Rousseau navigated the art world, driven by the need to market his works in the hope of furthering his career. Richly illustrated with Rousseau’s idiosyncratic jungle scenes, landscapes, portraits, and still lifes, this volume presents new findings and includes essays that discuss the market for the artist in the 1920s and the veiled eroticism of the painter’s jungle scenes.

Distributed for the Barnes Foundation

Exhibition Schedule:

Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia
(October 19, 2025–February 22, 2026)

Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris
(March 24–July 20, 2026)
