Around a quarter of the world's population is affected by iron deficiency, and women of childbearing age as well as children and adolescents are considered a particular risk group. This reference book deals with the latest scientific findings concerning the iron supply of the human organism with natural foods. It dispels the misconception that plant iron is less valuable than animal iron by presenting the absorption of iron from plant foods via a newly discovered metabolic pathway. From this, new points of view can be derived for vegetarians and vegans, who until now have belonged to the risk group. Furthermore, it is dedicated to forward-looking possibilities of diagnosing iron deficiency and describes modern concepts for determining the bioavailability of iron in food. New findings on the biochemistry of iron in brain metabolism, the description of the different reference values of the international professional societies and practical advice for special diets, risk groups and age groups as well as cooking recipes with simple information on iron intake complete the work. The book is aimed at nutritionists and medical practitioners, nutrition and food scientists, dieticians, pharmacists and sports scientists.

This book provides a novel method to teach eponymically named physical signs of the alimentary tract and intrabdominal organs. The focus is on the historical aspect of the named signs, how to perform the sign described by the author, and the pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in eliciting a positive test. The goal is to guide the reader to appreciate how these bedside signs provide a more profound understanding of the mechanism of disease. By doing so, they become more than simply rote memorization but an appreciation of how a direct hands-on assessment involving observing, engaging, listening, and touching the patient assists in diagnosis. Hence, these techniques provided the additional benefit of better connecting the practitioner to the patients and maintaining the art of medicine, which is rapidly losing its foothold within the medical community. This book will serve as a teaching tool for learners, teachers, and practicing physicians to preserve the artof the physical examination using a form of a case-based teaching and learning style approach. Illustrations throughout the text provide a visual representation of how to perform the sign. The authors believe this method of teaching and learning is more meaningful to the student in that they will be able to associate the name with the person's historical features, the sign, and its pathophysiologic mechanism(s). Gastrointestinal Eponymic Signs is a must-have resource for medical students, residents, fellows, teaching faculty, and any practicing physician seeking to understand how physical examination signs assist in diagnosis.

This book is focused on a clinical-based diagnostic approach of autonomic dysfunctions, highlighting main diagnostic tools and pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies available nowadays. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a subcomponent of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and dysfunction of one or more subdivisions of the ANS, when accompanying other diseases, is linked to a worse prognosis of the latter. In some circumstances or when severe, dysfunction of ANS itself results in symptoms and disability. A myriad of factors can cause autonomic dysfunction and more than one can concur even in the same patient; due to the expansive nature of the ANS, patients can be affected by a wide range of conditions. Each chapter is characterized by a similar structure and is devoted to a different dysfunction. For each pathology, the book offers the essential information on mechanisms of action, treatments and outcomes. Written by experts in the research of these disorders, the volume addresses primarily Neurologists, but will be a useful tool also for Gastroenterologists, Ophthalmologists, Urologists, Cardiologists and Internal medicine specialists.

This book deals with all the aspects related to such an organ. The appendix has been considered a vestigial remnant until the recent discoveries about its active immunologic function. It is particularly important for people living in poor areas of the world to restore the bacterial flora after infections. In addition, the appendix seems to exert an effect in the development of immune-related diseases spreading in developed countries, according to the theory of the safe house. The book is divided in three parts: the first is dedicated to embryology, anatomy and physiology. The second and third ones are dedicated to diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory and neoplastic diseases.

The management of injured and acutely unwell patients remains a cornerstone of surgical practice. Evidence-based medicine and clinical guidelines help us choose the best management and treatment options for our patients. However, many questions in medicine have not been researched or are not readily amenable to research. In fact, there is more to the art and mastery of practicing clinical medicine than the evidence-based approach. Information gained over years of reflective clinical practice and cumulative wisdom adds value to evidence-based clinical medicine. With experience and clinical gestalt playing an equal, if not a more prominent role than what evidence can offer in a physician's approach to solving clinical problems, this book offers unique perspectives on the practice of medicine.Beyond Evidence-Based Medicine: Clinical Pearls from Experienced Physicians will be valuable for later-year medical students, medical educators, doctors in training, and consultant physicians alike.
