Foreign Bodies
A vibrant cultural history investigating pandemics and vaccines, by bestselling author and historian Simon SchamaCities and countries engulfed by panic and death, desperate for vaccines but fearful of what inoculation may bring. This is what the world has just gone through with Covid-19. But as Simon Schama shows in his epic history of vulnerable humanity caught between the terror of contagion and the ingenuity of science, it has happened before.Characteristically, Schama's message is delivered through gripping, page-turning stories of medical history set in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: smallpox strikes London; cholera hits Paris; plague comes to India. Threading through the scenes of terror, suffering and hope - in hospitals and prisons, palaces, and slums - are an unforgettable cast of characters: a philosopher-playwright burning up with smallpox in a country chateau; a vaccinating doctor paying house calls in Halifax; a woman doctor in south India driving her inoculator-carriage through the stricken streets as dead monkeys drop from the trees. But we are also in the labs when great, life-saving breakthroughs in public health happen, in Paris, Hong Kong, and Mumbai. At the heart of it all is an unsung hero: Waldemar Haffkine, a gun-toting Jewish student in Odesa turned microbiologist at the Pasteur Institute, hailed in England as "the saviour of mankind" for vaccinating millions against cholera and bubonic plague in British India while being cold-shouldered by the medical establishment of the Raj. Creator of the world's first mass production line of vaccines in Mumbai, he is tragically brought down in an act of shocking injustice.Foreign Bodies crosses borders between east and west, Asia and Europe, the worlds of rich and poor, politics and science. Its thrilling story carries with it the credo of its author on the interconnectedness of humanity and nature; of the powerful and the people. Ultimately, Schama says, as we face the challenges of our times together, "there are no foreigners, only familiars." This sweeping history of medicine reveals:- The Birth of Vaccines: Follow the gripping story of inoculation, from its controversial beginnings with smallpox in the eighteenth century to the breakthroughs that saved millions.- Unsung Heroes of Science: Meet the unforgettable cast of characters at the heart of medical history, including Waldemar Haffkine, the microbiologist who developed the first mass-produced vaccines against cholera and plague.- Global Pandemics: Travel from the slums of London to the palaces of Paris and the stricken streets of India as Schama traces the epic history of humanity's fight against contagion.- Narrative Nonfiction at its Finest: Discover a page-turning story, rich with detail, that connects the worlds of politics, poverty, and pioneering science across centuries.

Syphilis
Syphilis is an illness with mythology. The story of its origin, dissemination and treatment have all been mired in confusion, a mix of reality and quackery. I have tried to put the organism as the principal protagonist of the story, firmly in an historical focus which centres more on its social impact than on its particular medical management. A diagnosis of Syphilis had personal and community consequence and its impact transcended into the arts. Despite the discovery of an effective treatment to which the organism has fortunately failed to mutate, the restrictions in available management have been social and a result of prejudice towards its victims. This may explain why it is once again on the global rise in places where access to the most basic antibiotics remains limited. This book uniquely considers the sociological sequel of infection, the wider influence extending beyond the physical that has become its legacy.

Second Treatise of Government
Do you want to read the Second Treatise of Government? If so then keep reading… At the time these treatises were written, English politics had undergone decades of upheaval in the wake of the English Civil War. When Dutch monarch William of Orange ascended to the English throne in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, burning questions over the best form of governance for England were prominent in the intelligentsia of the era. It was a time when England grappled with its incremental transition from monarchy to early forms of democracy and right to vote, where dynastic monarchy and religious theory still held considerable power over the formation of the state. 'This is a wonderful memoir ... the only fault I can find is that it was over so very quickly! Best mates Anthony Bennett and James Carroll wouldn't have it any other way.Calving Straps and Zombie Cats is the adventures of two young vets dealing with all creatures (and humans!) great and small in country Australia.
The biographies of Günther Just, Heinrich Poll and Fritz Steiniger stand for the wide range of topics and attitudes in German genetic research before and during the Nazi period. H. Poll was a medical professor of Jewish descent, head of the Institute of Anatomy and dean of the Hamburg medical faculty. He was forced to retire in 1933. In contrast to G. Just and F. Steiniger he conducted racial research. His PhD student, the zoologist G. Just, headed both the Institute of Genetic Research in Greifswald and a genetic department in the "Reichsgesundheitsamt" in Berlin. G. Just tried to pro- mote voluntary eugenics from 1925 to 1933, but then left this topic and turned to social anthropo- logy comparing individual school performance to professional performance. Natural philosophy, holism and religious vitalism dominated his thoughts. G. Just's career was not entirely straightforward, because he rejected racism and other ideologies of the time. This was also true for his pupil F. Steiniger, who was a field zoologist and ornithologist commanded to establish an institute for eradication of lice in the occupied town of Riga in Estonia during World War II.

Empire of Madness
An urgent rethinking of the Western approach to mental health, which treats the symptoms rather than the exploitative systems causing our distress—by a Rhodes Scholar and Harvard Medical School physician-anthropologist—offering lessons from the rest of the world.

What if the mainstay of mental health care involved cancelling onerous debt, giving poor people free housing, and paying reparations to the descendants of slavery and colonialism? In Empire of Madness, Dr. Khameer Kidia re-evaluates the Western approach to mental health, which medicates symptoms instead of changing the structures that harm the human psyche. A physician and researcher whose own family suffers from the psychological effects of colonialism, Kidia highlights the limitations of the Western mental health model by reporting from the front lines of mental health crises at home, in the clinic, and during a decade of fieldwork.

Clear-eyed and openhearted, Kidia asks the nuanced questions unaddressed by our current mental health model: How do history, culture, and politics shape mental distress? Are hoarding and burnout medical diagnoses or social problems? Why are schizophrenia outcomes sometimes better in poor countries without antipsychotics? Can a traditional healer treat mental illness better than a Western-trained clinician? For those living in poverty, can cash replace pills?

With rigorous research, cutting analysis, and illuminating prose, Kidia invites us to reimagine mental health as a global idea where our wellbeing is mutual and everyone’s voice—patients, caregivers, and healthcare workers alike—matters.
