Swirling Starlings
Through his photographs of swirling flocks of starlings - murmurations - Dutch photographer Erik Hijweege captures the impressive drama of the natural world and illuminates the beautiful choreography of this breath-taking phenomenon. Text in English and Dutch.

Through his photographs of swirling swarms of starlings - murmurations - photographer Erik Hijweege explores the impressive drama of the natural world. In this series of images, he captures flocks of starlings as they form and reform in the Dutch sky. Often they present as familiar shapes, such as fish, or swans, that can best be seen when captured in photographs. In the accompanying text, art historian Maartje van den Heuvel compares Hijweege’s images to the cloudy skies in 17th century Dutch painting. Nature journalist Koos Dijksterhuis explains why starling swarms occur, and explains the wonderful choreography of this breath-taking natural phenomenon. This work was exhibited at the Nature Museum Fryslan in Leeuwarden.

Text in English and Dutch.

Atlas of the New World
A photographic atlas that projects future climate scenarios onto present-day landscapes—turning data into haunting visions of a world transformed.

Atlas of the New World is a visionary photographic project by Giulia Piermartiri and Edoardo Delille that merges documentary rigor with speculative imagination.

Birds
Consisting of images photographed from the pages of antique ornithological volumes, this book is Clark Winter's tribute to the glorious world of exotic birds. In the eighteenth and nine- teenth centuries, explorers wandered the planet in search of the unknown, sometimes traveling for years with little commu- nication and guidance. Charles Darwin and his predecessors and contemporaries enjoyed a self-assured sense of purpose, though their actual knowledge during such journeys was often limited. When they returned home with specimens of hitherto unknown species of flora and fauna, all were astounded by such visual extravagance. Of birds in particular, their shapes, intricate color patterns and feathers were overwhelming—alternatively described as divinely inspired or the result of evolution and the battle for survival: a debate that continues to this day. With its intricate hand-colored illustrations, Birds is a testament to this lost sense of awe, one difficult yet not impossible to access in today's connected world.
