Media Studies

Eigenvalue provides the first history of 'eigenvalue' by building an important bridge between the hard and the soft sciences. Originally a mathematical term, Hanjo Berressem applies Eigenvalue, which roughly translates to proper value, to the media studies discipline for the first time, providing a philological history and line of development across the sciences through to contemporary cultural studies. Berressem's groundbreaking work is organized into 2 books, with the first book broken down into six topical areas - mathematics, physics, cybernetics, biology, literary studies, cultural studies. The second book discusses the place of eigenvalues in sound, light and literature, specifically, Alvin Lucier's experimental composition "I am Sitting in a Room,¿? Bill Morrison's eight-minute experimental film Light is Calling and the literary works of Thomas Pynchon. Berressem's thought-provoking philology is an important reference point for readers seeking an authoritative introduction to a term that connects other key ideas in contemporary debate.

This book highlights how horror in film and television creates platforms to address distinct areas of modern-day concern. In examining the prevalence of dark tropes in contemporary horror films such as Get Out, Annabelle: Creation, A Quiet Place, Hereditary and The Nun, as well as series such as Stranger Things, American Horror Story and Game of Thrones, amongst numerous others, the authors contend that we are witnessing the emergence of a 'horror renaissance'. They posit that horror films or programmes, once widely considered to be a low form of popular culture entertainment, can contain deeper meanings or subtext and are increasingly covering serious subject matter. This book thus explores how horror is utilised as a tool to explore social and political anxieties of the cultural moment and is thus presented as a site for contestation, exploration and expansion to discuss present-day fears. It demonstrates how contemporary horror reflects the horror of modern-day life, be it political, biological, social or environmental. A vital contribution to studies of the horror genre in contemporary culture, and the effect it has on social anxieties in a threatening and seemingly apocalyptic time for the world, this is a vital text for students and researchers in popular culture, film, television and media studies.

¿The Palgrave Handbook of Media Misinformation provides a comprehensive and cutting-edge resource on the critical debates surrounding fake news and misinformation online. Spanning all continents and linking academic, journalistic, and educational communities, this collection offers authoritative coverage of conspiracy theories, the post-Trump and Brexit landscape, and the role of big tech in threats to democracy and free speech. The collection moves through a diagnosis of misinformation and its impacts on democracy and civic societies, the 'mainstreaming' of conspiracy theory, the impacts of misinformation on health and science, and the increasing significance of data visualization. Following these diagnoses, the handbook moves to responses from two communities of practice - the world of journalism and the field of media literacy.

What's it like covering East Asia as a foreign correspondent? In Spilling Ink, American journalist Jonathan Adams reveals the gritty reality of reporting from the world's most dynamic region. Lured by the biggest story of the twenty-first century - the Rise of China - Adams' first taste of Asia was interning in Hong Kong for the International Herald Tribune. After working as a Newsweek stringer and Taipei Times "copy-monkey," he made the leap to full-time freelancer, choosing fascinating but underreported Taiwan as his base. Adams' decade-long adventure takes the reader from backstreet meetings with sex workers and fortune-tellers to the interviews with presidents (and inadvertently making the news rather than just reporting it). We track down Catholic vigilantes in a violent corner of Mindanao, experience the frenzied build-up to the Beijing Olympics, chase serious stories on algae blooms and labour relations, and pay the bills with clickbait stories on Japanese maid cafes and penis festivals. And along the way we see the death of old media and the emergence of a new, leaner model. Spilling Ink (originally published under the title Welcome Home, Master) is an honest, funny, and revealing behind-the-scenes look at foreign reporting, a nuts-and-bolts account of finding, pitching and writing stories, of making a living as a freelance newsman. Part-travelogue, part Asian journalism primer, the book explains why Adams loved the job and why he ultimately left it.
