This is the incredible story of the forty years of The Smiths in a lavishly illustrated hardback edition. Manchester has given birth to many famous bands and musicians, but none have caught the attention or imagination of the public quite as much as The Smiths. Formed in Manchester in 1982, composed of singer Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce. Morrissey and Marr formed the band's song-writing partnership. The Smiths are regarded as one of the most important acts to emerge from 1980s British independent music. The Smiths signed to Rough Trade Records in 1983 and released their first album, The Smiths, in 1984. Their focus on a guitar, bass and drum sound, fusing 1960s rock and post-punk, was a rejection of the synth-pop sound predominant at the time. Several singles reached the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart, and all their studio albums reached the top five of the UK Albums Chart, including the number-one album Meat Is Murder (1985). They achieved mainstream success in Europe with The Queen Is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987), which both entered the top 20 of the European Albums Chart. This is the story of band.

One man, his piano and their miraculous survival.<BR><BR>'Extraordinary' Baroness Julia Neuberger<BR>'Powerful and gruelling ... an almost unimaginable story of horror and survival' Mail on Sunday<BR>'Stunning. A beautiful blend of action, poetry, thought-provoking comment and music ... just brilliant' James Ainscough OBE<BR>'A gripping narrative of suffering, loss and survival, with music at its heart' Fiona Maddocks<BR><BR>All future, freedom and success lay ahead of young pianist Stephen de Bastion in 1930s Hungary. Life whirled headily around cocktails, romance, applause and the buzz of Budapest late into the night. Then, 1939. Stephen's world disintegrates and this becomes a story of his brutal descent, of his time in labour camps, of Mauthausen and Gunskirchen and the unimaginable horrors he endured during the Holocaust as a man of Jewish descent. Yet, this is also a tale of extraordinary escape ... and the piano, waiting for him.<BR><BR>The same piano that Roxanne de Bastion, his granddaughter, inherits when her father dies. It has been in the family over one hundred years but it is only when, deep in grief, she discovers a cassette recording of Stephen, that the astonishing history of the piano, the man and her family begins to unravel. Weaving together his original recordings, unpublished memoirs, letters and documents, Roxanne sings out her grandfather's story of music and hope, lost and found. Luminous and profoundly moving, this book captures the great spirit of one man in the face of darkness and the hope that echoes down through generations.

There is a reason why good teachers insist their pupils study Bach. Every note counts as with no other composer. I've played some Bach in my time . . . but it is fair to say that he has never been front and centre in my repertoire. Until now . . .When his 2020-2021 season was cancelled due to the pandemic, distinguished pianist Robert Silverman decided to embark on a mega-project-the entire first volume of Johann Sebastian Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, one of the finest monuments of keyboard repertoire in the Western world.Bach's Sonic Tapestry-The Well-Tempered Clavier of 1722 traces the author's two-year journey as he studied, learned, performed, taught, and recorded the forty-eight compositions that he came to revere.Written in an informal yet informative manner and sprinkled with moments of lightheartedness, this reader-friendly study is comprised of three segments:Part I - Prelude: For Bach enthusiasts or those who have tried without success to enjoy his music, this section introduces various facets of the music's background.Part II - Interlude: The author's answers to questions posed by piano students and teachers at various recitals and workshops over the years.Part III - Fugue: Delves deeper into the critical issues the author has learned about each piece, including essential aspects for performers to consider when studying or interpreting them.Bach's Sonic Tapestry-The Well-Tempered Clavier of 1722 will help readers appreciate this cornerstone of classical music and guide those learning to play these astonishing twenty-four preludes and fugues.
