Present Your Research to the World! The World Congress 2009 on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering - the triennial scientific meeting of the IUPESM - is the world's leading forum for presenting the results of current scientific work in health-related physics and technologies to an international audience. With more than 2,800 presentations it will be the biggest conference in the fields of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering in 2009! Medical physics, biomedical engineering and bioengineering have been driving forces of innovation and progress in medicine and healthcare over the past two decades. As new key technologies arise with significant potential to open new options in diagnostics and therapeutics, it is a multidisciplinary task to evaluate their benefit for medicine and healthcare with respect to the quality of performance and therapeutic output. Covering key aspects such as information and communication technologies, micro- and nanosystems, optics and biotechnology, the congress will serve as an inter- and multidisciplinary platform that brings together people from basic research, R&D, industry and medical application to discuss these issues. As a major event for science, medicine and technology the congress provides a comprehensive overview and in-depth, first-hand information on new developments, advanced technologies and current and future applications. Und so heißt es in den Sammlungen der Nobelvorlesungen über den ersten Physiknobelpreisträger schlicht: 'Professor W. Röntgen hat keinen Vortrag gehalten.' Die 'X-Strahlen', wie Röntgen das von ihm entdeckte Phänomen bezeichnete, revolutionierten die Medizin (S. 76). Heute kommt keine Orthopädiepraxis ohne Röntgenröhre aus; und in Form der Computertomografie erstellen Ärztinnen und Ärzte binnen weniger Sekunden hochauflösende Bilder des Körperinneren (S. 70). Dr. Technik hat jedoch noch mehr Werkzeuge in petto: Roboter fungieren als OP-Assistenten (S. 6), Kniegelenke werden per Biochip untersucht (S. 14), Dentisten kreieren künstliche Zähne (S. 28). Die rasante Entwicklung eines neuen Impfstoffs, der Millionen Menschen von einer mit unter tödlich verlaufenden Coronavirus-Infektion bewahrte, demonstriert eindrücklich die Leistungsfähigkeit der heutigen ärztlichen Kunst (S. 54). Und wenn Chemiker komplette Organe durchsichtig machen (S. 64), grenzt das schon fast an Zauberei.

This book addresses microalgae, which represent a very promising biomass resource for wastewater treatment and producing biofuels. Accordingly, microalgae are also an expanding sector in biofuels and wastewater treatment, as can be seen in several high-profile start-ups from around the globe, including Solix Biofuels, Craig Venter's Synthetic Genomics, PetroSun, Chevron Corporation, ENN Group etc. In addition, a number of recent studies and patent applications have confirmed the value of modern microalgae for biofuels production and wastewater treatment systems. However, substantial inconsistencies have been observed in terms of system boundaries, scope, the cultivation of microalgae and oil extraction systems, production costs and economic viability, cost-lowering components, etc. Moreover, the downstream technologies and core principles involved in liquid fuel extraction from microalgae cells are still in their early stages, and not always adequate for industrial production. Accordingly, multilateral co-operation between universities, research institutes, governments, stakeholders and researchers is called for in order to make microalgae biofuels economical. Responding to this challenge, the book begins with a general introduction to microalgae and the algae industry, and subsequently discusses all major aspects of microalgal biotechnology, from strain isolation and robust strain development, to biofuel development, refinement and wastewater treatment.

The initial chapters discuss the start of minimally invasive surgery and robotics. Subsequent chapters address starting up a robotics program and incorporating robotics into ones practice. The textbook next centers on specific robotic techniques or robotic management of certain disease processes. These chapters are written by experts in the fields and include multiple tables, illustrations, and videos describing the techniques where applicable. Each chapter also discusses the current literature. The final chapters focus on the future of robotics, cost of robotics, and include other possible future platforms and as well as the new FDA approved Xi and SP Intuitive surgical platforms. Robotic Colon and Rectal Surgery: Principles and Practice presents the first in-depth, cohesive and comprehensive approach to all aspects of robotic colorectal surgery.

Es wird die Entwicklung eines modularen Robotersystems beschrieben, das bisher manuell erledigte Arbeitsschritte automatische durchführt. Ziel einer solchen Automatisierung ist einerseits den nötigen Persomal- und Kostenaufwand zu reduzieren und wissenschaftiche Erkentnisse schneller und leichter zu erzielen. Hierzu werden ein Roboter zur Probevorbereitung und ein Roboter zur zweistufigen Untersuchung von Proben mit automatischer Erkennung des interessierenden Bereiches entwickelt. Ein weiterer Aspekt ist die Steigerung der Effizienz hochauflösender, bildgebender Laboranalytik. Hierzu werden zwei einfache automatische bildgebende Roboter entwickelt, mit denen eine Vorauswahl der für weitere Untersuchungen interessanten Proben automatisch durchgeführt wird. Um eine automatische Gesamtprozesskette zu ermöglichen, wird ein auf die Einzelroboter abgestimmtes Transportsystem entwickelt, das den Transport von Mikrotiterplatten zwischen den Funktionseinheiten übernimmt. Zur Umsetzung der Einzelfunktionen werden Bildverarbeitungsmittel zur Erkennung von Informationen in Bildern in automatischen Algorithmen implementiert.

This book provides an up-to-date overview of the clinical applications, methods, and technologies of teleophthalmology within the field of preventive medicine. The ability of novel methods to detect the initial signs of neurodegenerative diseases on the basis of alterations in the retina is reviewed, and detailed attention is paid to the role of teleophthalmology in screening for vision-threatening diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. A major part of the book is devoted to novel imaging methods and the latest information technologies, including advanced mobile communication and Web 2.0 applications in teleophthalmology. In addition, the initial projects of an interdisciplinary cooperation in preventive medicine are described. All of the authors are experienced in the scientific and practical aspects of teleophthalmology, including e-learning, and have produced a book that will meet the needs of all medical care providers interested in using teleophthalmology.

Multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a heterogeneous population of cells which reside in a variety of tissues. They differentiate into several mesodermal lineages, secrete a multitude of trophic factors and contribute to tissue homeostasis. MSCs are able to exert immunosuppressive activities by interfering with inflammatory cytokine production and with T- and B-cell proliferation. These immunomodulating properties make MSCs promising candidates for the treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. There are, however, certain caveats involved including inappropriate migration of cells in the body, immune rejection, tumor formation, or graft versus host disease (GvHD). This book investigates the current state of the MSC-dependent therapy of chronic inflammatory disorders and autoimmune diseases. Among the covered topics are GvHD, chronic kidney, liver and lung disease, ischemic heart and inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, various rheumatic and neurological disorders and, lastly, tumors and solid organ transplantations. This book also questions the immunoprivileged status of MSCs, discusses the therapeutic role of MSCs in experimental animal disease models and their translation to the corresponding human disorders, envisions a role for MSCs in tumor interventions and, lastly, describes a systems biology approach for stem cells and inflammation.
