TOOLympics 2023 was the third edition of a series of events to showcase competitions in the area of formal methods, colocated with the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software (ETAPS 2023), held in April in Paris, France. The goal is to acknowledge the achievements of the various research competitions and comparative evaluations broadly related to the field of formal methods, to explain to the audience which tools from the field of formal methods they evaluate, and to understand their commonalities and differences. The developers of the participating tools typically participate in the competitions and evaluations, choosing the right parameters for the tools, or the best workflow for the approach.A total of ten competitions joined TOOLympics in 2023 and were presented at the event: CHC-COMP, MCC, QComp, ARCH-COMP, RERS, SL-COMP, SV-COMP, Test-Comp, VerifyThis, and the VT-Long-Term Challenge. Six of these are represented in this proceedings volume as papers: ARCH-COMP, CHC-COMP, MCC, QComp, VerifyThis, and the VerifyThis Long-Term Challenge. Each of these papers was peer-reviewed in single-blind mode.The papers will be of value to researchers and practitioners who employ formal methods approaches such as model checking, program analysis, probabilistic analysis, runtime verification, SAT solving, and SMT solving.

This book constitutes refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Emerging Networking Architecture and Technologies, ICENAT 2022, held in Shenzhen, China, in October 2022.The 50 papers presented were thoroughly reviewed and selected from the 106 submissions. The volume focuses on the latest achievements in the field of emerging network technologies, covering the topics of emerging networking architecture, network frontier technologies, industry network applications and so on.

Manufacturing computers in series was quite a feat in the 1950s. As mathematical as it gets, the machines discussed here were called X1 and X8.The industrial achievement combined with the background in a mathematical research center made the company Electrologica a legend in Dutch computing. The tales in this book are told by those who have a right to tell. Highly engaged professionals take readers back to their pioneering work with the machines and in retrospect unveil some of the values, which went without saying in the 1960s. To disagree, Paul Klint relates the contrasting views on software in Dutch research traditions. ALGOL culture: Frans Kruseman Aretz takes the reader along to the detailed decisions on constructing compilers and shows the values of an ALGOL culture transpiring. Signposts: Dirk Dekker for the first time 'owns' his algorithm for mutual exclusion. In particle physics: René van Dantzig's use case was an Electrologica X8 computer controlling two other computers in three-dimensional detection of colliding particles. Early steps in AI: Lambert Meertens' tale of the X8 machine composing a violin quartet comes with his original presentation, as well as the code in ALGOL 60. The reflections of first hand experiences combine well with the second thoughts of historical research into archival sources. Historians Huub de Beer and Gerard Alberts offer a view into the boardrooms of the local enterprise Electrologica, and of the electronics multinational Philips. Where pioneers and historians meet in an inspiring dialogue, the reader gains a view on the often implicit decisions constituting the field.Fortuitously, a copy of the X8 was retrieved from Kiel, Germany, and put on display at Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, Leiden. Sparked by the very material presence of an X8, the present book takes stock of the state of historiography of Electrologica.Gerard Alberts is an associate professor in History of Digital Cultures, retired from the University of Amsterdam. Jan Friso Groote is a full professor of Formal Methods at the Eindhoven University of Technology.

This Festschrift volume, dedicated to Jifeng He on the occasion of his 80th birthday, includes refereed papers by leading researchers, many of them current and former colleagues, presented at a dedicated celebration in the Shanghai Science Hall in September 2023. Jifeng was an important researcher on the European ESPRIT ProCoS project and the Working Group on Provably Correct Systems, subsequently he collaborated with Tony Hoare on Unifying Theories of Programming. Jifeng returned to China in 1998, first to the United Nations University in Macau and then to the East China Normal University in Shanghai. He has since founded an Artificial Intelligence research institute that focuses on the application of technology in large-scale industrial software systems. His scientific contributions have been recognized through his election to membership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.The first paper in the volume provides an overview of Jifeng's research contributions, especially inthe area of formal methods, and the following two papers detail developments in UTP and rCOS (refinement calculus of object systems). In the next two sections of the book, the editors included papers by colleagues and coauthors of Jifeng while he was at the University of Oxford and engaged with the European ProCoS project. The section that follows includes papers authored by colleagues from his later research in China and Europe. The final section includes a paper related to Jifeng's recent roadmap for UTP.

The 16th volume of ToPNoC contains revised and extended versions of a selection of the best workshop and tutorial papers presented at the 41st International Conference on Application and Theory of Petri Nets and Concurrency, Petri Nets 2020, and the 20th International Conference on Application of Concurrency to System Design, ACSD 2020.The papers cover a diverse range of topics including model checking and system verification, refinement and synthesis; foundational work on specific classes of Petri nets; and innovative applications of Petri nets and other models of concurrency. Application areas covered in this volume are: process mining, verification, formal semantics, distributed simulations, business processes, distributed systems, and net synthesis. Thus, this volume gives a good overview of ongoing research on concurrent systems and Petri nets.

This book shows how different types of motion can be disambiguated into their components in a richer way than that currently possible in computer vision.Previous research of motion analysis has generally not yet considered the basic nature of higher orders of motion such as acceleration. Hence, this book introduces an approximation of the acceleration field using established optical flow techniques. Further, acceleration is decomposed into radial and tangential based on geometry and propagated as a general motion descriptor; this book shows the capability for differentiating different types of motion both on synthesized data and real image sequences.Beyond acceleration, the higher orders of motion flow and their continuant parts are investigated for further revealing the chaotic motion fields. Naturally, it is possible to extend this notion further: to detect higher orders of image motion. In this respect, this book shows how jerk and snap can be obtained from image sequences. The derived results on test images and heel strike detection in gait analysis illustrate the ability of higher-order motion, which provide the basis for the following research and applications in the future.We hope that the publication of this book will bring a new perspective to researchers and graduate students in the field of video analysis in computer vision.

Starting with a Laurea in Ingegneria Elettronica and a PhD in Computer and Systems Engineering at the Politecnico di Torino, Tiziana has stayed faithful to her love of organized management of composable functionalities in software and systems, with building blocks and MDD, and she strives for coherence and alignment in complex systems through verification, model checking and workflow synthesis. Her quest for simplicity spans technologies (low-code/no-code; ITSy project), business (Business Model Canvas; tools for innovative business models) and disciplines with her concept of the Digital Thread, a metaphor for IT-mediated interoperation of reusable and ideally verified tools and systems in new platforms where reuse, repurposing and evolution are supported by design. Her most recent initiative, R@ISE, aims at opening the world of IT production and adaptation to a wider range of users and professions. Tiziana is a cofounder and managing editor of the International Journal on Software Tools for Technology Transfer, she cofounded the ISoLA conference, and cofounded METAFrame Technologies serving as CEO. She is a Fellow of the Society for Design and Process Science and a Fellow and President of the Irish Computer Society.Throughout her career Tiziana's successes have been motivated by how best to advance science and engineering through the implementation of techniques in challenging applications, and the contributions in this volume by leading researchers are representative of a community that shares this drive.
