The Golem goes to the movies - and stays there. Klaus S. Davidowicz traces the ancient myth of the Golem across the silver screen: from the silent guardian of Prague to plastinated Barbie - as monster, savior, memory, rebellion. This is a film book that looks deeper: into Jewish mysticism, kabbalistic letter-magic, and modern cinema icons like Blade Runner and Inglourious Basterds. The Golem is more than legend - it's a way of thinking, a mirror, a question posed to creation itself. Davidowicz shows how a creature of clay and myth became a reflection of Jewish experience, cultural anxiety, and artistic vision. Alongside classics he analyzes many forgotten, surprising, or overlooked films - with insight, passion, and a sense for the magical power of cinema.

Memoir of a Collection
In this book of linked, illustrated essays--a unique hybrid of memoir, art writing, and wisdom-seeking narrative--Steven Kasher looks closely at some thirty artworks in his personal collection. These are not necessarily the largest or most valuable pieces that have passed through his hands, but the ones that have lodged themselves in his mind: a photograph of Janis Joplin, a Philip Guston painting of a salami sandwich on seeded rye, a haunting self-portrait by the comics artist Leela Corman. What sufferings and joys are revealed through these images, he asks? What can they teach us about an expanded self? Can they show us how to love? Through his reflections on these works, Kasher also retraces his personal journey. It is a journey through the New York art world as an artist, an art dealer, a collector, a curator, a writer. The journey of a first-generation Jewish American who plants a Zen seed as a teenager and finds spiritual fruition decades later. A journey through the memory of the Holocaust and a firsthand experience of the Civil Rights Movement. But most of all it is a journey through the meanings we find in art--one that will inspire every art collector and art lover to go take another look at their favorite pictures.

Digital Culture & Society (DCS)
Technology has the power to colonize our visions of the future. But those visions are always socially situated, relational, and enmeshed in societal sense-making from the past to the present. It is this social embedding that has the power to bring future ideas into material existence. How do communities around the world rethink techno-futures through friction, re-appropriation, spirituality and, possibly, wholesome change? This issue brings together articles exploring popular techno-futures from international and interdisciplinary perspectives, including cultural and media studies, science and technology studies, and related disciplines. The contributors decenter the discussion on socio-technical futures and the role of popular culture, aesthetics and media in their (re)production.

The End of Nature?
This issue brings together a global group of photographers contemplating nature's fragile beauty and its ever-changing relationship to people. Whether depicting haiku-like moments on a remote Japanese island, the ancient forests of California, or the entire Earth, the images gathered in this sweeping yet intimate issue remind us that nature is not separate from humanity, but entwined with our lives in ways that are both mysterious and profoundly urgent.

Remember: You have been warned!

On Photography
Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism<BR><BR>A new edition of Susan Sontag's groundbreaking critique of photography-its problems, politics, and possibilities.<BR><BR>"To photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed," Sontag writes in the opening pages of On Photography, which went on to influence generations of theorists, film critics, and readers everywhere. Originally published in the 1970s, her groundbreaking collection remains uncannily prescient and profoundly precise.<BR><BR>With her singular searching eye, and her refusal to buckle under received wisdom, she presents a rousing critique of the functions of imagery-to seduce, to advertise, to evoke, to commemorate, to conspire, to conceal-across six essays. The result is a damning portrait of the ways we use imagery to manufacture reality and authority that feels as if it were written today.

For an Ecology of Images
When Susan Sontag first proposed the idea of an "ecology of images," she meant it as an exhortation to be vigilant against the vast surplus of pictures threatening our ability to truly see. Today, beyond the deep anxieties over a diminishing attention economy, concern focuses on the environmental cost of storing and circulating the digital images that confront us with unprecedented speed.<BR><BR>Against the disposable rapidity demanded by digital media, Peter Szendy emphasizes the labor and time required for images to develop and come into view. This inquisitive essay takes us from mimicry in the animal kingdom to the history of the shadow, Pliny’s story about the birth of painting to Nabokov’s butterflies, the first use of slo-mo in film to the first aerial photograph.<BR><BR>Praise for Peter Szendy:<BR>"From book to book, Peter Szendy is in the process of constructing one of the most singular philosophical oeuvres of our time."<BR>- Laurent de Sutter, Focus vif<BR><BR>"A writer of exquisite sensitivity and wit, as well as of impeccable clarity."<BR>- Gil Anidjar, Columbia University

'Artists & Photographs', New York 1970

Regarding the Pain of Others
A brilliant, clear-eyed consideration of the visual representation of violence in our culture-its ubiquity, meanings, and effects.<BR><BR> Considered one of the greatest critics of her generation, Susan Sontag followed up her monumental On Photography with an extended study of human violence, reflecting on a question first posed by Virginia Woolf in Three Guineas: How in your opinion are we to prevent war?<BR><BR>"For a long time some people believed that if the horror could be made vivid enough, most people would finally take in the outrageousness, the insanity of war."<BR><BR> One of the distinguishing features of modern life is that it supplies countless opportunities for regarding (at a distance, through the medium of photography) horrors taking place throughout the world. But are viewers inured-or incited-to violence by the depiction of cruelty? Is the viewer's perception of reality eroded by the daily barrage of such images? What does it mean to care about the suffering of others far away?<BR><BR> First published more than twenty years after her now-classic book On Photography, which changed how we understand the very condition of being modern, Regarding the Pain of Others challenges our thinking not only about the uses and means of images, but about how war itself is waged (and understood) in our time, the limits of sympathy, and the obligations of conscience.
