This book focuses on the analysis of fiscal requirements to achieve the social protection agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals. Developing countries in Asia have expanded their social protection programs. One of the key challenges is creating sustainable financing-considered the bedrock for success of the social protection agendas of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Agenda and Strategy 2030 of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Also outlined in this book are options to close the gaps in population coverage and adequacy of protection of social assistance, health care, and social insurance systems of ADB developing members over the next decade.

This book illustrates how Korean American novels and poetry use anger to enact change, foregrounding the various ways it can pinpoint injustice and suggest alternatives. Experiences of the "forgotten" Korean War, Korean military-mediated immigration to the US in the twentieth century, and the role of Korean Americans in some of the largest upheavals in American history all inform a specific relation to anger and both its expression and use in Korean American literature. Through various texts comprised of both poetry and prose from authors including Steph Cha, Cathy Park Hong, Eugene Lim, and Yongsoo Park, Willems highlights how anger is seen to function in some contexts as a positive fulcrum for change.

'ROBERT FISK HAS BEEN REPORTING FROM THE MIDDLE EAST WITH INCOMPARABLE DEPTH AND UNDERSTANDING...AND EXTRAORDINARY COURAGE' NOAM CHOMSKYIn this final work from renowned journalist Robert Fisk, he picks up reporting on the Middle East where his internationally bestselling The Great War of Civilisation left off. From the Arab uprisings and the Syrian civil war to Israel's conflicts with Palestine and Lebanon, Fisk condemns the West's ongoing hypocrisy and interference while revealing the horrific truth of life on the ground. Unafraid to criticise authority and unpick complex truths, hecreates a compelling narrative of passionate and engaging journalism, historical analysis and eyewitness reporting. With a Postscript by Nelofer Pazira-Fisk and a foreword by Patrick Cockburn, Night of Power delivers an essential and prophetic account of the last twenty years, which exposes the inescapable consequences of colonial oppression and violence in the Middle East.'This is a masterly work by a unique and gifted "historian of the present", who was unafraid to criticise authority while revealing the horrific realities of life and death on the ground' Conor O'Clery, Irish Times'Every sentence of Robert Fisk radiates his loathe of wars and the inevitable dehumanization they produce, which makes his (sadly) last book an everlasting warning, beyond its value as a meticulous historical recount and analysis of today's events' Amira Hass, journalist, Haaretz'Fisk's reporting is clear-eyed and unflinching, a model for what journalists should aspire to practice in their ever more important and widely threatened craft' Anthony Arnove, editor, Iraq Under Siege and author, Iraq: The Logic of Withdrawal'I was at the funeral of a friend of mine, in Kilternan cemetery ... I came across Robert Fisk's grave. Someone has to bear witness to the unspeakable, and he did it, whatever the cost to himself' Neil Jordan, film director and writer

The Indian Mate: Volume 2 uncovers a unique Australian experience through the eyes of an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) who later became an Australian citizen. With crushing expectations, $1000 and a bag full of dreams (his own and his family's), Divesh sets foot in Australia. Despite feelings of homesickness and isolation, he is determined to complete his Masters in IT. As he gets stuck into his studies, he is taken aback by how different the Aussie culture is.Needing to integrate himself, Divesh had to learn the customs of the country - how to walk, talk, think and act like an Aussie. It was all very new to him, yet he embraced the journey - to learn and share along the way.Between his part-time jobs and studies, Divesh had very few emotional ties. He was wholly consumed by his work and initial goal of saving around $150,000 that would allow his family to join him in Australia. So, it was wholly unexpected when one day on the V/Line train, he met an Australian woman, who became his strength as he navigated through the cultural and personal struggles.Divesh did his best to balance the dif¿culties of being a foreigner with the exciting opportunities of ¿nding success and happiness in Australia and his Indian heritage. While navigating through two different worlds, he felt he was not Australian enough in Australia, and not Indian enough when visiting India. Yet, this dual identity allowed him to overcome the insurmountable challenges he faced and build the life he once dreamed of.

Overseas military access and basing is a critical component of China's global military ambitions. In this report, the authors examine three case studies among the United States' competitors to help anticipate what Chinese overseas access and basing might look like in the 2030s. They assess the risks posed by Chinese military expansion and recommend U.S. strategies to help shape the environment in which Chinese global ambitions will unfold.

This Open Access book provides a comprehensive analysis of political reforms in Japan since the 1990s, emphasizing the role of ideas in shaping their goals and outcomes. For more than fifteen years following the collapse of Japan's economic bubble, politicians, business people and academics tackled a range of institutional reforms. The sweeping changes they enacted-covering almost all facets of the public sphere, including elections, public administration, courts and the central bank-fundamentally altered Japanese political processes and policies. Taken together, they arguably represent the final touches of Japan's political modernization, which had been unfolding since the mid-19th century. Throughout the reform process, advocates were inspired by a combination of liberal and modernist ideas. This book examines those guiding concepts and illustrates the often messy process of applying them to real-world institutions. While most reforms began from common goals, they ultimately produced different-and frequently unexpected-institutional outcomes, which continue to shape Japanese politics. By focusing on the relationship between the ideas and processes that shaped Japan's reforms, this book presents a broad vision of institutional change in comparative politics.

What's it like covering East Asia as a foreign correspondent? In Spilling Ink, American journalist Jonathan Adams reveals the gritty reality of reporting from the world's most dynamic region. Lured by the biggest story of the twenty-first century - the Rise of China - Adams' first taste of Asia was interning in Hong Kong for the International Herald Tribune. After working as a Newsweek stringer and Taipei Times "copy-monkey," he made the leap to full-time freelancer, choosing fascinating but underreported Taiwan as his base. Adams' decade-long adventure takes the reader from backstreet meetings with sex workers and fortune-tellers to the interviews with presidents (and inadvertently making the news rather than just reporting it). We track down Catholic vigilantes in a violent corner of Mindanao, experience the frenzied build-up to the Beijing Olympics, chase serious stories on algae blooms and labour relations, and pay the bills with clickbait stories on Japanese maid cafes and penis festivals. And along the way we see the death of old media and the emergence of a new, leaner model. Spilling Ink (originally published under the title Welcome Home, Master) is an honest, funny, and revealing behind-the-scenes look at foreign reporting, a nuts-and-bolts account of finding, pitching and writing stories, of making a living as a freelance newsman. Part-travelogue, part Asian journalism primer, the book explains why Adams loved the job and why he ultimately left it.
