Temporary Tecture

The Beauty of Impermanence
The Beauty of Impermanence is a scholarly documentation of the 2023 Sharjah Architecture Triennial. It explores architectural responses to sustainability, resource scarcity, and adaptability, highlighting the contrasting resource management strategies of the global North and South over the last four hundred years. The North exploited resources through a belief in endless abundance and technological advances, underpinned by religious and mythological justifications for colonialism and slavery. The South, characterized by resource scarcity, has innovated within these constraints, developing adaptable, sustainable solutions that may offer a blueprint for future global resource management. The book advocates for a shift away from a consumption-driven approach to one that is ecologically and ethically responsible, urging a collective resolve to create systemic change for a sustainable future. It is structured around the thematic strands of "Renewed Contextual," "Extraction Politics," and "Intangible Bodies" and features essays by noted scholars and practitioners. Detailed project spreads from Triennial participants, showcasing innovative practices that integrate environmentally friendly methods and materials, round off this volume that serves as a vital resource for those engaged in the fields of architecture, sustainability, and urban planning.

Brutalist Japan
Featuring striking photography by an expert in the field, this exploration of Japanese brutalist architecture celebrates the surprising beauty and grace of buildings forged in concrete.Emerging in the devastating aftermath of World War II, brutalist architecture in Japan is characterized by its geometric shapes, functionality, and unconventional use of concrete-which is often left unfinished to showcase the material's inherent textures and imperfections. Japanese Brutalism represented a radical departure from traditional Japanese architecture, drawing inspiration from the global Brutalist movement but incorporating unique elements that reflect Japan's cultural and history. A leading expert on Japanese brutalism, Paul Tulett has traveled throughout the country to photograph extraordinary examples of this aesthetic. His photography is marked by sharp angles, clean lines, and a sense of austerity that contrasts strongly with the intricate ornamentation generally seen in traditional Japanese architecture. In over 200 dynamic and impeccable photographs Tulett captures the elements and paradoxes inherent in the buildings themselves: the rawness of concrete juxtaposed with elegant design; a harmonious integration into urban landscapes; and a global, modernist approach that maintains traditional Japanese elements. Highlighting the work of architects such as Kenzo Tange, Tadao Ando, and Kazuo Shinohara, this unique volume shows how a blend of global influences and Japanese sensibilities has left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape, making Japanese Brutalism an intensely captivating and enduring style.

Über chinesische Gärten
A classic in German for the first time China has a long history of garden design, resulting in the emergence of a unique style and diverse forms of expression. Common to all Chinese gardens is that they follow the principle that less is sometimes more, and are designed to evoke a sense of the infinite. Chen wrote his text in five essays between 1978 and 1982, and these appeared in succession in the Journal of Tongji University. Due to continuing demand, they were eventually published as a book with 32 photographs and Chinese calligraphy by Jiang Qiting. This first German edition is based on that edition. - Brief history of Chinese garden design - Convenient format with calligraphy, over 30 photos and 10 hand drawings by the author - A book for anyone who appreciates beautiful gardens Chen Congzhou (1918-2000) was a renowned garden designer and an internationally recognized expert in Chinese architecture and garden history. Weltkonstruktion
With his "Weltkonstruktion" publication, Sascha Roesler offers the first global history of architectural ethnography (conducted by modern architects). The publication goal was to document the relevance of this history for today's constructive thinking in architecture. The modern architects' empirical exploration of domestic buildings outside Europe uncovered the narrowings of modern concepts of construction and made visible their epistemic limitations . In the ethnographic discourses about popular building outside Europe, parameters related to building that the architecture discipline - owing to time constrictions, or theoretical and ideological reasons - had neglected, may reconsidered again. In lieu of construction's usual orientation towards load-bearing structures, novel conceptual fields of reference appear, highlighted as thermodynamic or symbolically structured materiality.

Donald Judd
Donald Judd was one of the most important exponents of American Minimal Art. Among the lesser-known aspects of his work are the numerous built architectural projects in which he explores the relationship between architecture art, furniture, and landscape. One particular location was of great significance to Judd's architectural work: Fort D.R. Russell, a former US military base in the Chihuahuan desert on the southern edge of the pioneer town of Marfa, Texas. Judd acquired the fort and other structures in Marfa which he systematically converted into one of the largest ensemble collections of contemporary art in the world.

This new edition updates and expands on the successful book of 2007. It presents two additional building complexes southwest of Marfa and includes a new epilogue by the author, which places Judd's built architectural work from its beginning at 101 Spring Street, Judd's studio and residence in New York, and the structures in Marfa in a contemporary context.

How to Build an Indian House
A model for designers of mass housing anywhere: how homes can be built in one of the world's densest citiesThis volume focuses on one of Mumbai's and India's perennial and most daunting questions: mass housing. How to Build an Indian House documents, analyses and represents robust examples of different housing types in the city. Along with documentary drawings and photographs, architect Sameep Padora developed a series of analytical models in order to understand spatial organization and infrastructure in residential building typologies. This documentation is particularly pertinent today, given the critical need to address the issue of housing in India. Since this subject is of immense interest to professionals and students alike, the cases studied here range from residential typologies in Mumbai, such as the chawls (originally workers' housing that has morphed into vibrant communities), to more hybrid examples such as the Swadeshi Market, which demonstrates an interesting multiuse building. These Mumbai typologies challenge architects, planners and designers to test their imagination in thinking about affordable housing.
