The Epic of Gilgamesh
The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia, regarded as the earliest surviving notable literature and the second oldest religious text, after the Pyramid Texts. The literary history of Gilgamesh begins with five Sumerian poems about Bilgamesh (Sumerian for "Gilgamesh"), king of Uruk, dating from the Third Dynasty of Ur (c.¿2100 BC). These independent stories were later used as source material for a combined epic in Akkadian. The first surviving version of this combined epic, known as the "Old Babylonian" version, dates back to the 18th century BC and is titled after its incipit, Sh¿tur eli sharr¿ ("Surpassing All Other Kings"). Only a few tablets of it have survived. The later Standard Babylonian version compiled by Sîn-l¿qi-unninni dates from the 13th to the 10th centuries BC and bears the incipit Sha naqba ¿muru ("He who Saw the Abyss", in unmetaphoric terms: "He who Sees the Unknown"). Approximately two-thirds of this longer, twelve-tablet version have been recovered. Some of the best copies were discovered in the library ruins of the 7th-century BC Assyrian king Ashurbanipal. The first half of the story discusses Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, and Enkidu, a wild man created by the gods to stop Gilgamesh from oppressing the people of Uruk. After Enkidu becomes civilized through sexual initiation with Shamhat, he travels to Uruk, where he challenges Gilgamesh to a test of strength. Gilgamesh wins the contest; nonetheless, the two become friends. Together, they make a six-day journey to the legendary Cedar Forest, where they plan to slay the Guardian, Humbaba the Terrible, and cut down the sacred Cedar. The goddess Ishtar sends the Bull of Heaven to punish Gilgamesh for spurning her advances. Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill the Bull of Heaven after which the gods decide to sentence Enkidu to death and kill him. In the second half of the epic, distress over Enkidu's death causes Gilgamesh to undertake a long and perilous journey to discover the secret of eternal life. He eventually learns that "Life, which you look for, you will never find. For when the gods created man, they let death be his share, and life withheld in their own hands". Nevertheless, because of his great building projects, his account of Siduri's advice, and what the immortal man Utnapishtim told him about the Great Flood, Gilgamesh's fame survived well after his death, with expanding interest in the his story. It has been translated into many languages and is featured in several works of popular fiction. The epic is regarded as a foundational work in religion and the tradition of heroic sagas, with Gilgamesh forming the prototype for later heroes like Heracles (Hercules), and the epic itself serving as an influence for Homeric epics. Apocolocyntosis

Greek New Comedy Beyond Menander
While Menander has long stood as the emblematic figure of Greek New Comedy, recent scholarship has increasingly challenged this Menandrocentric view by re-examining the broader landscape of comic production in the late-Classic and Hellenistic period. This volume brings to the fore the fragmentary remains of Menander's contemporaries-such as Philemon, Diphilus, Apollodorus and others-offering new insights into their character typologies, linguistic style, and political engagement. Through philological, literary, and reception-oriented approaches, the contributions in this book reevaluate long-standing assumptions about the genre. The volume not only recontextualizes New Comedy within its historical and literary frameworks but also sheds light on its impact on Roman comedy. By expanding the canon beyond Menander, this study provides classicists, philologists, and literary historians with a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the genre's complexity and cultural significance.

Generic Interplays in Imperial Greek Literature
Greek literature of the Roman Empire has long ago ceased to be treated as the fruit of pure imitation and unimaginative reproduction of literary models from the Classical age. Drawing from the conceptual and methodological agendas of modern fields such as narratology, cognitive studies, and linguistics, classicists have approached the authors of the Second Sophistic with a fresh eye and treat them as anything but lacking originality in the ways they chose themes and developed their compositional styles. Nevertheless, a great amount of the Imperial literature still remains significantly unexplored in terms of the ways literary genres evolved at those times and interacted with each other. Although rhetoric has left its mark on the literary production of this era, on the other hand, an abundance of other genres call for further comparative research. In this line of thought, the papers of this volume focus on how the literary goal-settings of Imperial Greek authors shaped the generic trends and physiognomy of current literary production, and penetrate more into the various co-existing and, very frequently, interactive modes of writing, in order to shed new light on the generic fusions operated in the Imperial Era on a literary level.

Metaphysik

FrC 24.4 Menandros
This volume belongs to the Fragmenta Comica series, a project dedicated to providing translations and commentaries on all surviving fragments of ancient Greek comic playwrights. In this volume, Kyriaki A. Ioannidou offers the first comprehensive commentary on fifteen of Menander's fragmentary plays: Achaioi - Thais (fr. 89-169 K.-A.). This book broadens the list of fragmentary Menander plays with full commentaries aiming to shed light on the lesser-known Menandrian comedies and to deepen our understanding of Menander's dramatic style and themes. The fragments and testimonies are examined from a philological, historical, and theatrical perspective rendering the Menandrian text accessible to classicists, theatre historians, researchers working on the reception of drama, and theatre practitioners alike. Analysis of pictorial and material evidence, such as wall paintings and ancient book tags, complements the textual discussion. Special emphasis is given to Menander's distinctive use of rare words and unique word-forms, alongside detailed discussions on the citation context of each fragment and testimony.

Last Thoughts on Euripides
Last Thoughts on Euripedes is a companion to the second edition of volume II of the Oxford Classical Text of Euripides, which contains a radically revised text and apparatus criticus of six textually problematic plays. Its purpose is to explain and justify the choices which the author has made in that second edition, to assess what others have achieved or have failed to achieve in the more than forty years since the first edition was published, and to advance a number of new proposals concerning the plays. This volume shares its format with the author's Studies on the Text of Euripides (1981), which accompanied the first edition, but it comprehends a much large number of passages. Wherever possible, the discussions are used as a basis for pursuing topics of wider interest (linguistic, stylistic, or metrical), which will be of value not just to future commentators on the six plays but to readers and scholars of Euripides and Greek tragedy more generally. In a final chapter, the author advances arguments for a new identification of the corrector of one of the manuscripts.
