This book provides a thought-provoking analysis of the perception of China as a formidable threat amidst the current era of socio-political polarization and growing militarization. By exploring the discursive strategies and tactics employed to cultivate antagonism, it unveils the "culture of enmity" that fosters fear and distrust towards China, both in Taiwan and beyond. Drawing on interdisciplinary research, the book delves into the ontological characteristics of such a culture and provides insights into the Taiwan conflict as a crucial observation post for understanding the intricate discursive dynamics of the New Cold War. The geopolitical situation of Taiwan presents a predicament as it finds itself at the crossroads of two conflicting realms. On one hand, it is deeply intertwined with Chinese culture and history, with the added dimension of its strategic proximity to China at a time when the latter aspires to become a regional hegemon. On the other hand, Taiwan boasts a Western-influenced political system, Western-leaning strategic alliances, and a distinct political identity forged over the past few decades. It is within this intricate interplay of apparently dissonant but overlapping factors that the thorny and challenging nature of the discursive struggle for Taiwan becomes apparent. The book consists of a collection of articles initially created by the authors during their research in Taiwan over several years, first at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and then at National Cheng Kung University. The articles, organized into different chapters, cover various disciplines such as political philosophy, geopolitics, history, discourse analysis, and anthropology, reflecting the diverse educational backgrounds of the authors. Despite their diversity, all chapters are deeply connected to the discursive struggle over Taiwan. Ultimately, by offering a nuanced perspective that challenges prevailing narratives, the authors provide adeliberately controversial yet refreshing viewpoint that advocates for a policy of empathy and negotiation. Such approach goes beyond mere dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing the need for coexistence and peaceful living among different "worlds".

Overseas military access and basing is a critical component of China's global military ambitions. They assess the risks posed by Chinese military expansion and recommend U.S. strategies to help shape the environment in which Chinese global ambitions will unfold.

The volume approaches the relations between China and the Catholic Church in a quite comprehensive and unprejudiced way. Its approach is new since it clarifies the root of the persistent antagonism of both the imperial and republican Chinese Authorities toward the Catholic Church: no matter how the Catholic approach has been, they kept their Sino-centric attitude. It also points out the lack of a truly objective and complete understanding of China by the Western society, including Catholic missionaries: from a blind admiration to a negative evaluation, determined by contingent circumstances and motivations. It tries to clarify myths and stereotyped understandings, that have been created during the historical process, including the role of the Jesuits and in particular of Fr. Matteo Ricci. It also pays particular attention to the role of the Vatican in the recent religious policy of Chinese Government. The reading of the book could be enlightening especially for academics, university students and Christian clergy interested in the history of Catholic Missions in China.

'In one six-week period in November and December, more than four hundred church buildings were bulldozed to the ground.' Zhejiang, a prosperous eastern province, is home to the highest percentage of Christians in China. This volume describes how God established His kingdom there. The region contains so many churches that it has earned the nickname 'the Jerusalem of China'. The Church in Zhejiang made great sacrifices during the Cultural Revolution. From just one city, 48 church leaders died for their faith. The Communists earmarked Zhejiang as a 'religion-free zone', yet Jesus Christ is worshipped today by more than thirteen million people throughout the province. This is the third volume in The China Chronicles, which tells the modern history of the Church in China. The series is designed to inform the wider world of the astonishing work of the Holy Spirit in the world's most populous country.

Winner of the Duke of Wellington Medal for Military History, this dramatic new account of the dawn of modern East Asia places Korea at the center of a transformed world order wrought by imperial greed and devastating wars.

In the nineteenth century, Russia participated in two "great games." One, well known, pitted the tsar's empire against Britain in Central Asia. The other, hitherto unrecognized, saw Russia, China, and Japan vying for domination of Korea. This eye-opening account argues that the contest over Korea set the course for the future of the global order.

After centuries of isolation, Korea became a prize in the Sino-Japanese War at the close of the nineteenth century and the Russo-Japanese War at the beginning of the twentieth. Japan's victories not only gained the Meiji regime a colony but also dislodged Imperial China from regional supremacy. As the fate of the declining tsarist empire was sealed by its surprising military defeat, the United States and Britain sized up the new Japanese challenger.

A vivid story of two geopolitical earthquakes sharing Korea as their epicenter, The Other Great Game rewrites the script of twentieth-century rivalry in the Pacific and enriches our understanding of contemporary global affairs, from the origins of Korea's bifurcated identity-a legacy of internal politics amid the imperial squabble-to China's irredentist ambitions and Russia's nostalgic dreams of recovering great-power status.

A Financial Times Best Book of the Year

The definitive biography of Zhou Enlai, the first premier and preeminent diplomat of the People's Republic of China, who protected his country against the excesses of his boss-Chairman Mao.

Zhou Enlai spent twenty-seven years as premier of the People's Republic of China and ten as its foreign minister. He was also its legendary spymaster. Richard Nixon proclaimed him "the greatest statesman of our era." Yet Zhou has always been overshadowed by Chairman Mao. Chen Jian brings Zhou into the light, offering a nuanced portrait of a revolutionary and master diplomat whose vision shaped China and the broader world.

Born to a declining mandarin family in 1898, Zhou received a classical education and as a teenager spent time in modernizing Japan. Zhou embraced communist revolution as a vehicle for China's own development, yet Zhou was never a committed Maoist. While he worked closely with the chairman, he used his extraordinary political and bureaucratic skill to mitigate the damage caused by Mao's radicalism and maintain China's international standing.

When Zhou died in 1976, the China we know today was not yet visible on the horizon. He never saw a glistening Shanghai skyline or the emergence of Chinese capitalism. But the Chinese influence now felt in every corner of the globe rests on Zhou's work.

A groundbreaking history of nuclear weapons across the world, from their invention to the end of the Cold WarHow should we deal with nuclear weapons? The discovery of nuclear fission fundamentally changed the world order. Its power was harnessed, nuclear bombs invented, and the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed. In recurring international crises and calls for arms control, the threat of nuclear war has hung over humanity ever since.David Holloway traces how these weapons shaped the last century, from the US-Soviet arms race to the rivalry between India and Pakistan. Deterrence and intimidation, alliances and war plans, international treaties and organizations have all played their role. At the centre were political leaders-among them Truman, Kennedy, and Reagan, as well as Stalin, Khrushchev, and Gorbachev-who all had their fingers on the nuclear button. This is a global history of these fearsome weapons and our attempts to deal with the consequences of their existence-a story at once fascinating and repellent, of a very dangerous period in our history.
