A People's History of Portugal
A People's History of Portugal reconstructs the last two hundred years of class struggle in Portugal. Raquel Varela and Roberto della Santa examine the material conditions of its people - examining the real causes of the revolutionary waves and counter-revolutionary backlash.Starting in the early nineteenth century, the theme of colonialism and its antithesis runs through the narrative, as working-class life was closely entwined with Portuguese colonial exploitation. Despite relatively slow industrial development, Portuguese people spearheaded a surprisingly vigorous radical culture of dissent, eventually sparking a social and political revolution in 1974.More recently, Portugal's inclusion in the European Union has put its people in a neoliberal stranglehold that stifles democracy to this day. Are the working people of Portugal able to carry the memory of the revolutionary past into its future? This is a history of, and for, the people.

The Power to Pardon in Medieval and Early Modern Christian Europe
In medieval and early modern Christian Europe, the power to exercise pardon over rigor of justice was one of the strongest manifestations of sovereignty and, as such, it was almost ubiquitous. For merciful rulers, pardoning was a means to enforce peace and assert the supremacy of their judicial authority, whereas for subjects, it was primarily a way to save their lives and escape punishment, often at a lower cost than other mitigating practices.Studying the predominant role of pardon in medieval and early modern societies, this collective volume examines how pardons operated within complex legal systems marked by a plurality of legal orders, where various means of conflict resolution coexisted and litigants had to navigate multiple levels of authorities.

Armada
The definitive history of the Spanish Armada, lavishly illustrated and fully revised

Selected by Foreign Affairs as one of the Best Books of 2023

“Will surely become the definitive account.”—Stephen Brumwell, Wall Street Journal

In July 1588 the Spanish Armada sailed from Corunna to conquer England. Three weeks later an English fireship attack in the Channel—and then a fierce naval battle—foiled the planned invasion. Many myths still surround these events. The genius of Sir Francis Drake is exalted, while Spain’s efforts are belittled. But what really happened during that fateful encounter?

Drawing on archives from around the world, Colin Martin and Geoffrey Parker also deploy vital new evidence from Armada shipwrecks off the coasts of Ireland and Scotland. Their gripping, beautifully illustrated account provides a fresh understanding of how the rival fleets came into being; how they looked, sounded, and smelled; and what happened when they finally clashed.

Looking beyond the events of 1588 to the complex politics which made war between England and Spain inevitable, and at the political and dynastic aftermath, Armada deconstructs the many legends to reveal why, ultimately, the bold Spanish mission failed.

Paula Rego
The female protagonists of the Portuguese-British artist Paula Rego either come from real life or derive from the world's great legends, fairy tales, and myths. As complicated heroines of our time they have endured illegal abortions or fight against the limitations of traditional gender roles instead of dragons. "My favorite themes are power games and hierarchies". Rego's oeuvre is a tour de force of creativity. Endlessly versatile and inexhaustible, it is deeply rooted in pictorial worlds and stories from both past and present. This volume approaches the remarkable wealth of Rego's multi-faceted universe through a range of different perspectives and tells of the power of history and emotions, women's rights and invisible structures of domination.

al-Andalus

Spain
An incisive account of modern Spain, from the death of Franco to the Catalan referendum and beyond

“Comprehensive and engaging.”—Gideon Rachman, Financial Times

Spain’s transition to democracy after Franco’s long dictatorship was widely hailed as a success, ushering in three decades of unprecedented progress and prosperity. Yet over the past decade its political consensus has been under severe strain. A stable two-party system has splintered, with disruptive new parties on the far left and far right. No government has had a majority since 2015.

Michael Reid overturns the stereotypical view of Spain as a country haunted by its Francoist past. From Catalan separatism and the indignados movement to the Spanish economy’s overdependence on tourism and small business, Spain’s challenges can often seem unique. But Reid is careful to emphasize the many pressures it faces in common with its European neighbors—such as austerity, populism, and increasing polarization. The result is a penetrating yet rounded portrait of a vibrant country—one that is more often visited than understood.

History of the Spanish Reformation
It was only a few years ago that the Christian church celebrated the 500th anniversary of the protestant reformation, that historic day when the German monk and scholar, Martin Luther, nailed the 95 Theses to the chapel door of Wittenberg castle. What Luther likely thought was an otherwise insignificant event at the time turned out to be the much-needed spark to light an ecclesiastical movement towards reforming all life and thought to the teaching of God's Word alone. And while much is known about the history of the Reformation in general, much of what transpired in the Spanish-speaking world remains obscure and forgotten. Here then enters Thomas M'Crie, the knowledgeable guide who takes readers on a tour throughout the history of the Spanish reformation as it unfolded. M'Crie's History of the reformation in Spain, originally published in 1829, is an invaluable gem of scholarship that deserves wider exposure and distribution, and, in an effort to make it more accessible to modern readership, has been reformatted and retitled to the History of the Spanish Reformation. M'Crie's objective was twofold, (i) to contribute towards the history of that reformational movement that affected all of Europe and the New World, and by doing so, (ii) rescuing the Spanish reformation from obscurity.- From the Foreword

Montane Netzwerke

My House in Málaga
In 1934 Sir Peter Chalmers Mitchell retired at the age of seventy from a distinguished career as Secretary of the Zoological Society of London. He moved to Málaga and spent his time writing his memoirs. Then came the fascist uprising of 1936. While most other British residents fled to Gibraltar, Sir Peter stayed put in order to protect his "house and servants". When the Italian forces supporting the rebellion took Málaga, Sir Peter was arrested together with Arthur Koestler, to whom he'd provided a safe haven. The arresting officer was Luis Bolín, Franco's chief propagandist, who had vowed that if he ever laid his hands on Koestler he would "shoot him like a dog". This is Sir Peter's memoir of that period, first published in 1938.
Chronicles of Fernão Lopes
Volume I of the first complete English translation of the chronicles of Fernão Lopes chronicles the reign of Pedro I (1357-67), dubbed both 'the Just' and 'the Cruel', including his dealings with the kingdom of Castile, the war between Castile and Aragon, and the revenge he took on the men who murdered the woman he loved, Inês de Castro. Until now, the chronicles of Fernão Lopes (c.1380-c.1460) have only been available in critical editions or in partial translations. Comparable to the works of Froissart in France or López de Ayala in Spain, the chronicles provide a wealth of detail on late fourteenth-century politics, diplomacy, warfare and economic matters, courtly society, queenship and noble women, as well as more mundane concerns such as food, health and the purchasing power of a fluctuating currency. Lopes had a keen eye for detail and a perspective especially attuned to the common people, and his chronicles provide an invaluable source for the history of Western Europe in the later Middle Ages.

Feministiken
