As one of Western Europe's least industrialized countries, Italy appeared impervious to such developments. It was this state of affairs at which the Futurist movement took aim. With its founding in 1909, the poet and impresario F.T. Marinetti called for a revitalization of aesthetic expression by means of "movement and aggression." A growing cadre of Futurist painters, poets, authors, and musicians exchanged Italy's cultural patrimony for new technologies, media, and metaphors, championing machine-propelled speed and its salutary hazards. Cubist painting, collage, and sculpture lent the Futurist campaign a revolutionary style to match its rhetorical fervor. Yet whereas Cubism remained a revolution of artistic form, Futurism sought to shatter the boundaries between art and life itself. Indeed, the movement's challenge to twentieth-century culture lay not in any specific set of images or objects, but a more comprehensive revolution of sensibility. By the mid-1910s there circulated several dozen Futurist proclamations on everything from men's clothing to set design, photography to film, dance to politics. That political impetus proved relentlessly paradoxical in origin and upshot. From its base in Milan, Futurist activity spread throughout the entire peninsula, while related movements emerged almost immediately in Moscow, Lisbon, Tiblisi, and Tokyo. Prefiguring and then propagandizing Fascist imperialism, Futurism also galvanized a range of progressive modernist phenomena. More than a century later, the "activist model" of the Futurist avant-garde remains deeply fraught in its historical implications. This book is the first extensive study of the categories Hebrew speakers in Israel use for their classification of linguistic variation. It is commonly assumed that Modern Hebrew has no dialects in the traditional sense, despite considerable variation in everyday language use. Its particular sociolinguistic context makes Israel an interesting case to reassess cognitive sociolinguistic theory. This empirical study relies on interviews and experimental data from fieldwork to analyze cognitive processes that shape representations of social groups and linguistic phenomena. It is an original application of Grounded Theory Methodology and introduces the novel method group elicitation and rating task (GERT).

This book examines the life and thought of Ibn Mughayzil (fl. 895/1490), a Sh¿dhil¿ Sufi of late Maml¿k Cairo. It offers a portrait of the Sufi as an aspiring Sh¿dhil¿ master and talented author whose two known writings reflect major themes of Maml¿k-era Sufism, such as the desire to unite the "exoteric" sciences (¿ilm al-¿¿hir) and the "esoteric" science (¿ilm al-b¿¿in) or Sufism. At the same time, his works are distinguished by a number of features. Most notable is his treatment of the waking vision of Prophet Müammad after death, an experience that many Sufis claimed to have underwent. The study suggests that Ibn Mughayzil was the first author to produce a systematic and comprehensive examination of the topic and argues that he makes an important contribution by defending its authenticity and orthodoxy. Furthermore, his engagement with other key issues of his time, such as God's oneness and religious diversity, reveal that while often driven by the aim of defending Sufis from accusations of error, he was a creative synthesizer, drawing from a wide range of Sufi and other sources to develop and demonstrate his positions. Study of Ibn Mughayzil sheds light on the nature and quality of Maml¿k Sufi literature as well as the reception of earlier ideas, such as those of Ibn ¿Arab¿ (d. 638/1240) and Ibn al-F¿ri¿ (d. 632/1235).

Some manuscripts have been produced for the personal use of their scribe only; whereas a number of them are valued as autographs, most have been ephemeral and were discarded. This volume introduces a number of such manuscripts in a comparative perspective, from Japan to Europe through the Middle East. The main concern is the possibility of identifying the typical features of such manuscripts in terms of materials, visual organisation and content.

This edited collection brings together discussions of literary works from Israel, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, the Palestinian and Jewish Diasporas, as well as from authors and creators not directly involved with the conflict who are seeking to unpack its complexities for a wider audience. It offers new perspectives into how the Palestine/Israel conflict is, and can be, represented after the Second Palestinian Intifada, an epochal event for both Israelis and Palestinians. This collection foregrounds the thematic concerns that link literary engagements with Palestine/Israel across the globe but also examines the role that aesthetic representation plays in framing the conflict and its power dynamics. It addresses how emergent forms of writing and representation illuminate but also redescribe conflict in the context of Israel and Palestine and how, as in the case of the investigative graphic novel for example, depicting this conflict has had reverberations for representing conflict and conflict zones more widely.

In the traditional view of European scholarship, palimpsests are parchment manuscripts from Antiquity or the Middle Ages whose original content has been erased, scraped away, or washed off and later overwritten with new content. This removed content is usually the focus of research. The present volume, which brings together eighteen papers prepared for two workshops at the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures in Hamburg in 2021 and 2023, takes a broader perspective by going far beyond the borders of classical philology into the much less studied manuscript cultures of the Christian East (Aramaic, Armenian, Ethiopic, Georgian, Slavonic, Syriac), the Islamic world of Asia and Africa (Arabic), and East Asia (Japanese). It thematizes writing supports other than parchment that were suitable for palimpsesting; different practices applied in erasing and overwriting handwritten content and the various reasons for such undertakings; and the different methods that researchers can employ to reveal the content of the removed layers and the results that these methods can yield.
