A profound meditation on hip hop's transformative power, In the Hour of Chaos takes us deep into the mind of the genre's most unabashed revolutionary. This book is not an autobiography. It's not a manifesto. It's a razor-sharp investigation into hip hop and rap music by searing lyricist and global music icon Chuck D of Public Enemy. Engaging with some of the world's leading thinkers on hip hop, "Professor Chuck" sets out on a journey that celebrates fifty years of hip hop and charts paths forward for its future. Exploring the intersections of hip hop with Black radicalism and feminism, media and technology, and globalization and politics, this curated collection shows the power of culture and the arts not only to bring people together but to bring about political change in this current hour of chaos. Features conversations with leading thinkers, including Robin D. G. Kelley, H. Samy Alim, Jeff Chang, Davey D, Scot Brown, Cheryl L. Keyes, Gaye Theresa Johnson, Bryonn Bain, Maya Jupiter, Adam Bradley, Joan Morgan, and more.

It is our aim to generate a productive andcreative dialogue between music researchers in disparate locations andcontexts.

This is the iconic Josephine Baker in her own words.Funny, candid and unconventional: the wildly famous but elusive Josephine Baker tells her own story in this enchanting memoir.Baker took Paris by storm in the 1920s, dazzling audiences with her humour, beauty and effervescence on stage. She became an icon. Later, as one of the most recognisable women in the world, she became a spy for the French resistance and was awarded the Légion d'honneur for military service. After the war she became a civil rights activist, and in 1963 she spoke at the March on Washington alongside Martin Luther King. All this from a girl of mixed heritage, born in Missouri to a poor mother and a father she did not know.Formed from a series of conversations with the French journalist Marcel Sauvage over a period of more than twenty years, and now translated into English for the first time, this gorgeous book offers an insight into one of the most beguiling figures of the twentieth century.'Translated gorgeously into English... A delightful, nourishing read' Guardian'She was a beacon of joy and fellowship and her smile...reaches out to us across the years' Financial Times'Josephine Baker certainly shook things up. This memoir demonstrates - vividly - the pleasure she took in doing it' Washington PostWITH AN INTRODUCTION BY IJEOMA OLUOTRANSLATED BY ANAM ZAFAR AND SOPHIE LEWIS

The Klanghaus Toggenburg, located in the northeast of Switzerland and host to musical rehearsals, courses and concerts alike, is a place that enables visitors to experience a unique interplay of architecture, sound and nature. The Klanghaus in the Swiss Canton St. Gallen is the result of an impressive twenty-year development process: based on a concept by the late Marcel Meili, which won the 2010 thesis competition for the building, it was then realized by architect Astrid Staufer with the office Staufer & Hasler and opens its doors to the public in May of 2025. It is at its core a fundamentally social project, comprised of the work of all those involved in this process. Like the building itself, this publication is best understood as a research experiment intended to reveal new insights into sound and space. The book focuses on architectural aspects and constructive solutions for extraordinary room acoustics, as well as the interactions between the alpine landscape and natural yodeling or between the soundscape and the construction of the Klanghaus. It explores the many aspects of an extraordinary building, from the material vitality of shingles to the impressive proximity to the Ali Qapu Palace in Isfahan to the way ornaments become a visible expression of the essence of space and architecture itself. Combining various contributions from experienced and upcoming experts from fields as diverse as architecture, sound art, acoustics, ethnomusicology, art history, philosophy, history and tourism, this publication creates a polyphonic image and uncovers surprising connections. These texts are complemented by 3D architectural and construction drawings, documentary material, photo series, musical scores and lyrical fragments.

A “vast, multifaceted and enchanting” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune) meditation on the color blue and its fascinating role in Black history and culture, from National Book Award winner Imani Perry, “the most important interpreter of Black life in our time” (Eddie S. Glaude, Jr.)Throughout history, the concept of Blackness has been remarkably intertwined with another color: blue. In daily life, it is evoked in countless ways. Blue skies and blue water offer hope for that which lies beyond the current conditions. But blue is also the color of deep melancholy and heartache, echoing Louis Armstrong’s question, “What did I do to be so Black and blue?” In this book, celebrated author Imani Perry uses the world’s favorite color as a springboard for a riveting emotional, cultural, and spiritual journey—an examination of race and Blackness that transcends politics or ideology.Perry traces both blue and Blackness from their earliest roots to their many embodiments of contemporary culture, drawing deeply from her own life as well as art and history: The dyed indigo cloths of West Africa that were traded for human life in the 16th century. The mixture of awe and aversion in the old-fashioned characterization of dark-skinned people as “Blue Black.” The fundamentally American art form of blues music, sitting at the crossroads of pain and pleasure. The blue flowers Perry plants to honor a loved one gone too soon.Poignant, spellbinding, and utterly original, Black in Blues is a brilliant new work that could only have come from the mind of one of our greatest writers and thinkers. Attuned to the harrowing and the sublime aspects of the human experience, it is every bit as vivid, rich, and striking as blue itself.

What does it mean - and how does it feel - to grow up as a Black artist today?'This exceptional book, written with a mother's love for her seven creative children, sensitively offers profound and original insights and perspectives that enrich our culture. I feel so much wiser for reading it.' Bernardine EvaristoWhen Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason's eldest daughter, Isata, made her solo debut at the BBC Proms in 2023, she could not have been prouder. Watching years of hard work transform into a transcendent performance was profoundly moving, both as music-lover and parent. All fractured when her younger daughter turned to her in tears a few days later, having read online abuse about her sister. Isata, it was declared, did not deserve to be there. How do you prepare your child for the fact that no matter their talent, technique or dedication, they will be told they do not belong?Through conversations with her extraordinarily gifted family, Kanneh-Mason explores what it's like to come of age in these turbulent times, when Black artistic self-expression is so often met with disparagement and abuse online - and offers a hopeful, powerful way through.

At the dawn of the '70s, in a country still reeling from the aftershocks of World War 2, an underground movement of rock musicians resolved to tear it all up and start again. Welcome to France, 1968. Music fans in the English-speaking world are well-versed in the parallel Krautrock scene that sprung up across the border in Germany, but they are almost totally unaware of the French musical underground. There the radicalism of May '68 collided with the counterculture, post-psychedelic rock, and free-jazz to produce some of the most distinctive and vital music made anywhere in the '70s. Synths, Sax & Situationists tells the story of more famous bands like Magma, Etron Fou Leloublan, and Gong alongside almost-forgotten groups like Cheval Fou, Fille Qui Mousse, and Barricade.

An exhilarating debut novel told through three different voices, Whites Can Dance Too is Kalaf Epalanga's reflection on and celebration of the music of his homeland, the intertwining of cultural roots, and freedom and love.
