The fascination of Egypt
A View into the book you can find under "https://verlag.sandstein.de/reader/98-699_FaszinationAegypten-engl"
Ancient Egyptian culture continues to exert an unbroken fascination to this day. The appeal of these artefacts lies, among other things, in their great antiquity and good state of preservation, in their vibrant colours, the formal clarity and distinctiveness of their iconography, as well as the monumental impact of even the smallest objects. Egyptian works have been collected in Dresden ever since the early eighteenth century, when the foundations were laid for what is now a remarkable collection including, for example, the Dresden Book of the Dead papyrus, the famous mummies from Saqqara, and the remarkable temple reliefs with representations of the Sed Festival.
This book explores the history of the collection and of Egyptomania in Saxony during the Baroque Period, as well as elucidating the Ancient Egyptian pantheon and the concept of the afterlife as reflected in the Dresden Egyptian collection. The informative and lavishly illustrated catalogue section presents around 170 selected works. It not only offers a scholarly overview of the collection, but also sheds light on the royal cult of the gods, private religious practice, Pharaonic ideology, as well as the Ancient Egyptian cult of the dead and the afterlife.

Selinus VII. La ceramica di produzione locale di Selinunte
Among the handicraft products of Selinunte, pottery played a central role, both in terms of the development of the city and in relation to its contacts with the motherland Megara Iblaea, the other Sicilian colonies and the indigenous centres of western Sicily. Linda Adorno focuses on the locally produced pottery discovered in the insula on the eastern edge of the agora, which can be dated to the period between the last quarter of the 7th and the end of the 6th century BC. The vessels were categorised according to type and function. For this purpose, a selection of more than 1,200 vases was made from stratigraphies with reliable chronologies. This provides an overview that has never before been available in this form. Although these are simple everyday objects, the study of vase production has provided essential data that contribute to a better understanding of the social, economic and cultural structure of the Selinuntean community.A significant part of the research was dedicated to the early phases of colonial settlement in order to outline the temporal development of the ceramics produced by the city's workshops based on their models. In analyzing the evolution of these productions, imitation phenomena closely linked to models from the Corinthian and Ionian traditions transmitted by Megara Iblea were also taken into account. Finally, the conclusions propose a reconstructive synthesis of the systems, technological structures and work organisation that characterized the "model" of the Selinunte craft industry. The book is written in Italian.

Chaosbilder
Images of chaos cannot truly exist, as they would show the state of the world before its creation. Nevertheless, from antiquity through the Middle Ages to the present day, there have been repeated attempts to visualize what eludes our experience. Interplay with the conceptual history of chaos forces images of chaos to iconic aporias: this book presents a first comprehensive examination of such ideas.<BR>From the first depiction of chaos in a provincial Roman mosaic, the field of investigation extends into the 18th century and includes excursions into 19th-21st century art. Chaos images are characterized by entangled pagan and Christian ideas. In the Daoist tradition of China, visual concepts of chaos lead to extremely subtle iconic aporias.

Life and Afterlife in Ancient China
An epic new history of Ancient China told through the prism of a dozen extraordinary tombs<BR><BR>The three millennia up to the establishment of the first imperial Qin dynasty in 221 BC cemented many of the distinctive elements of Chinese civilisation still in place today: an extraordinarily challenging geography and environment, formidable infrastructure, a society based on the strict hierarchy of the family, a shared written script of characters, a cuisine founded on rice and millet, a material culture of ceramics, bronze, silk and jade, and a unique concept of the universe, in which ancestors continue to exist alongside the living. Records of these early achievements, and their diverse and unexpected expressions, often lie not in written history, but in how people marked the end of their lives: their dwellings for the afterlife. Tombs, and the treasures within them, are almost the only artefacts to survive from Ancient China; their scale and sophistication rivals their equivalents in Ancient Egypt.<BR><BR>Jessica Rawson, one of the most eminent Western scholars of China, explores twelve grand tombs - each from a specific historical moment and place - showing how they reveal wider political, dynastic and cultural developments, culminating in the lavish ambition of the First Emperor's monument, guarded by his army of terracotta warriors. Beautifully illustrated and drawing on the latest archaeological discoveries, Life and Afterlife in Ancient China illuminates a constellation of beliefs about life and death very different from our own and provides a remarkable new perspective on one of the oldest civilisations in the world.

The Parthenon Marbles
The Parthenon Marbles (formerly known as the Elgin Marbles), designed and executed by Pheidias to adorn the Parthenon, are perhaps the greatest of all classical sculptures. In 1801, Lord Elgin, then ambassador to the Turkish government, had chunks of the frieze sawn off and shipped to England, where they were subsequently seized by Parliament and sold to the British Museum to help pay off his debts.<BR><BR>This scandal, exacerbated by the inept handling of the sculptures by their self-appointed guardians, remains unresolved to this day. In his fierce, eloquent account of a shameful piece of British imperial history, Christopher Hitchens makes the moral, artistic, legal and political case for re-unifying the Parthenon frieze in Athens.<BR><BR>The opening of the New Acropolis Museum emphatically trumps the British Museum’s long-standing (if always questionable) objection that there is nowhere in Athens to house the Parthenon Marbles. With contributions by Nadine Gordimer and Professor Charalambos Bouras, The Parthenon Marbles will surely end all arguments about where these great treasures belong, and help bring a two-centuries-old disgrace to a just conclusion.

Red Figures
The red-figure vases from the National Museum “Domenico Ridola” of Matera in Italy and the Rizzon Collection – rich in precious Apulian and Lucanian pieces – offer a unique opportunity to grasp Magna Graecia antiquity from an unusual perspective through the photographs by Luigi Spina. Text in English and Italian.<BR><BR>The red-figure vases from the National Museum “Domenico Ridola” in Matera and the Rizzon Collection – rich in precious Apulian and Lucanian pieces – offer a unique opportunity to grasp Magna Graecia antiquity from an unusual perspective through the photographs by Luigi Spina. Significant testimony to vase painting between the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, the museum's artifacts largely date back to the discoveries of Domenico Ridola (1841-1932) and form part of elaborate funerary assemblages, possessing great aesthetic and historical value through which everyday life is reflected in myths.<BR> <BR>In the book, black is the protagonist: it enhances the red figures and brings out the keen eye of photographer Luigi Spina. Anatomical details, drapery, and decorative motifs emerge in all their strength without the filter of museum cases, while touches of white enrich the vases' bichrome palette.<BR> <BR>Photographing a work of art means capturing its deep meaning to communicate it to the world. Far from the idea of a museum catalog, the volume is rather a figurative atlas of antiquity.<BR> <BR>Text in English and Italian.

Bilder des Textilen
This book is the first to examine Renoir's handling of fashion and textiles, so opening up a fresh approach to the initially fêted artist who came under suspicion of kitsch in the 20th century. In her pictorial analysis, Agnes Sawer questions the cliché of the "painter of happiness" and shows how Renoir used textile structures and textures to develop an innovative, pioneering visual approach for the next generation of artists. To this end, she examines works that have rarely been considered in Renoir research to date. The author sheds light on the splendour of the fabrics in his painted interiors, and the depiction of fashion, accessories and handicrafts in Renoir's portraits of women. The painting Bal du Moulin de la Galette is used as an example showing how textiles even permeate Renoir's artistic compositions. Look inside - First comprehensive study on fashion and textiles in Renoir's painting - New starting point in Renoir research, with a focus on pictorial subjects that have rarely been considered to date

Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo
**Honorable Mention 2025 International Fine Print Dealers Association Book Award** "A feast for the eyes...the most complete volume you're ever likely to find about Hiroshige's monumental masterwork [...] [A] rare compendium." --The Japan Times A landmark book presenting the early "deluxe" versions of Hiroshige's Edo prints for the first time! Utagawa Hiroshige's unique landscape series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (modern-day Tokyo), first published in the 1850s, is among the best-known collections of Japanese prints and was revolutionary in its day. Individual prints from this collection are regarded as among the finest works in all of Japanese art. In this series, Hiroshige captures 118 locations in and around Edo, today's Tokyo, during all four seasons and often from hitherto unknown and unique perspectives. These views were first printed in exquisite luxury versions, incorporating innovative woodblock printing features like color gradation. No complete set of the early versions exists today and this is the first book to present a complete set of the deluxe early printings, sourced from 32 different museums and private collections. Author Andreas Marks consulted 4,700 prints in order to compile this definitive guide to Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Marks presents the various printed versions along with reference images showing how and where Hiroshige sourced his ideas for each view--from previous books and illustrations. The result is a definitive guide to understanding the complexity of Hiroshige's great work as well as the dynamics of the Japanese print market during this period. Marks' introduction discusses the genesis of the series in the context of Japanese landscape art as well as Hiroshige's personal biography. The book then presents all 118 prints together with their source materials and a map showing the locations of each view, followed by a detailed appendix discussing the great color variations found in subsequent printings of the series.
