Festungen in Bayern

Shakespeare's House
'[A] page-turning story' - Laurie Maguire, Times Literary Supplement <BR><BR>'A terrific addition to the Shakespeare library ... eye-opening.' - Michael Billington, Country Life<BR><BR>Now available in paperback, Richard's Schoch's compelling history of Shakespeare's birthplace reveals the value we place on the building and on the man himself.<BR><BR>In the wide realm of Shakespeare worship, the house in Stratford-upon-Avon where William Shakespeare was born in 1564 - known colloquially as the 'Birthplace' - remains the chief shrine. It's not as romantic as Anne Hathaway's thatched cottage, it's not where he wrote any of his plays, and there's nothing inside the house that once belonged to Shakespeare himself. So why, for centuries, have people kept turning up on the doorstep? Richard Schoch answers that question by examining the history of the Birthplace and by exploring how its changing fortunes over four centuries perfectly mirror the changing attitudes toward Shakespeare himself.<BR><BR>Based on original research in the archives of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon and the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, and featuring two black and white illustrated plate sections, this book traces the history of Shakespeare's birthplace over four centuries. Beginning in the 1560s, when Shakespeare was born there, it ends in the 1890s, when the house was rescued from private purchase and turned into the Shakespeare monument that it remains today.

'All'antica' - Bauornamentik der Frührenaissance in Italien
Two volumes The beginnings of Renaissance architecture in Florence, around 1420, were accompanied by a renewal of sculptural architectural ornamentation, and soon cast their spell over the rest of Europe. The 'antique style' was considered modern everywhere; Gothic architecture, the previous notion of modern, fell into gradual disrepute. This was an epoch-making paradigm shift, underpinned as architectural theory also took up the subject of architectural ornamentation. For the first time, Joachim Poeschke presents a detailed study of architectural ornamentation's development in Italy from approx. 1420 to 1490. His focus is on the period's productive engagement with antiquity, which defined the artistic work of the early Renaissance to a huge extent, and which is best noted in the details of architectural ornamentation. Capricci luterani?
Does Michelangelo's art reflect Catholic orthodoxy or is it the work of a follower of the Reform, forced to act in secret? The question of Michelangelo's religious belief is still debated, and the positions taken tend to remain unilateral. This volume gathers contributions by art historians, literary scholars, and historians of religion who address this question in all its complexity.

Annaberg, Marienberg, Potosí
Technical innovation and hegemonic politics accelerated the growth process in silver mining regions during the 16th century. This resulted in the founding of new, planned towns. In a comparative approach, the construction and expansion of the mining towns of Annaberg and Marienberg in the Erzgebirge and Potosí in the Viceroyalty of Peru are analyzed with reference to the architectural implications of regulatory policy measures. Particular attention is paid to the genesis and composition of the dynamically overlapping areas of state, religion, municipality and mining. Their appearance and structure are understood against the background of transcultural processes in architectural theory and practice, and the mining town is viewed as a setting for the negotiation of a hybrid architectural culture

Rome in twee dagen

Architecture Gothic And Renaissance
Architecture Gothic And RenaissanceThis book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards:1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions.2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work.We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Living with Palladio in the Sixteenth Century

The Pope and the Heretic
Giordano Bruno challenged everything in his pursuit of an all-embracing system of thought. This not only brought him patronage from powerful figures of the day but also put him in direct conflict with the Catholic Church. Arrested by the Inquisition and tried as a heretic, Bruno was imprisoned, tortured, and, after eight years, burned at the stake in 1600. The Vatican "regrets" the burning yet refuses to clear him of heresy. But Bruno's philosophy spread: Galileo, Isaac Newton, Christiaan Huygens, and Gottfried Leibniz all built upon his ideas; his thought experiments predate the work of such twentieth-century luminaries as Karl Popper; his religious thinking inspired such radicals as Baruch Spinoza; and his work on the art of memory had a profound effect on William Shakespeare.Chronicling a genius whose musings helped bring about the modern world, Michael White pieces together the final years -- the capture, trial, and the threat the Catholic Church felt -- that made Bruno a martyr of free thought.
