Drawing on interdisciplinary research, the book delves into the ontological characteristics of such a culture and provides insights into the Taiwan conflict as a crucial observation post for understanding the intricate discursive dynamics of the New Cold War. The geopolitical situation of Taiwan presents a predicament as it finds itself at the crossroads of two conflicting realms. On one hand, it is deeply intertwined with Chinese culture and history, with the added dimension of its strategic proximity to China at a time when the latter aspires to become a regional hegemon. On the other hand, Taiwan boasts a Western-influenced political system, Western-leaning strategic alliances, and a distinct political identity forged over the past few decades. It is within this intricate interplay of apparently dissonant but overlapping factors that the thorny and challenging nature of the discursive struggle for Taiwan becomes apparent. The book consists of a collection of articles initially created by the authors during their research in Taiwan over several years, first at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and then at National Cheng Kung University. The articles, organized into different chapters, cover various disciplines such as political philosophy, geopolitics, history, discourse analysis, and anthropology, reflecting the diverse educational backgrounds of the authors. Despite their diversity, all chapters are deeply connected to the discursive struggle over Taiwan. Ultimately, by offering a nuanced perspective that challenges prevailing narratives, the authors provide adeliberately controversial yet refreshing viewpoint that advocates for a policy of empathy and negotiation. This Open Access book provides a comprehensive analysis of political reforms in Japan since the 1990s, emphasizing the role of ideas in shaping their goals and outcomes. For more than fifteen years following the collapse of Japan's economic bubble, politicians, business people and academics tackled a range of institutional reforms. The sweeping changes they enacted-covering almost all facets of the public sphere, including elections, public administration, courts and the central bank-fundamentally altered Japanese political processes and policies. Taken together, they arguably represent the final touches of Japan's political modernization, which had been unfolding since the mid-19th century. Throughout the reform process, advocates were inspired by a combination of liberal and modernist ideas. This book examines those guiding concepts and illustrates the often messy process of applying them to real-world institutions. While most reforms began from common goals, they ultimately produced different-and frequently unexpected-institutional outcomes, which continue to shape Japanese politics. By focusing on the relationship between the ideas and processes that shaped Japan's reforms, this book presents a broad vision of institutional change in comparative politics.

The volume approaches the relations between China and the Catholic Church in a quite comprehensive and unprejudiced way. Its approach is new since it clarifies the root of the persistent antagonism of both the imperial and republican Chinese Authorities toward the Catholic Church: no matter how the Catholic approach has been, they kept their Sino-centric attitude. It also points out the lack of a truly objective and complete understanding of China by the Western society, including Catholic missionaries: from a blind admiration to a negative evaluation, determined by contingent circumstances and motivations. It tries to clarify myths and stereotyped understandings, that have been created during the historical process, including the role of the Jesuits and in particular of Fr. Matteo Ricci. It also pays particular attention to the role of the Vatican in the recent religious policy of Chinese Government.The reading of the book could be enlightening especially for academics, university students and Christian clergy interested in the history of Catholic Missions in China.

This book discusses the relationship between law and memory and explores the ways in which memory can be thought of as contributing to legal socialization and legal meaning-making. Against a backdrop of critical legal pluralism which examines the distributedness of law(s), this book introduces the notion of mnemonic legality. It emphasises memory as a resource of law rather than an object of law, on the basis of how it substantiates senses of belonging and comes to frame inclusions and exclusions from a national community on the basis of linear-trajectory and growth narratives of nationhood. Overall, it explores the sensorial and affective foundations of law, implicating memory and perceptions of belonging within this process of creating legality and legitimacy. By identifying how memory comes to shape and inform notions of law, it contributes to legal consciousness research and to important questions informing much socio-legal research.
