As a young ophthalmologist, I found corneal epithelial diseases a subject diffcult to grasp. One day, it occurred to me that the reason might be a lack of images showing the nature of the components of the changes visible with the slit lamp. With the slit lamp, the inevitable eye movements that blur the image limited the magnifcation level, but perhaps photography might be the answer. It was not a short journey, but in the end the idea proved right. By trial and error, the quality of the images improved, and after some time, I found that the resolution allowed reasonable comparisons with available images of histological preparations. Such comparisons allowed better und- standing of the substructures of epithelial in vivo lesions and, in conjunction with their in vivo dynamic features, eventually an understanding of at least some mechanisms behind them. This book, originating from over 20 years of experience with observations of ocular surface changes at high magnifcation level, covers several aspects of corneal epithelial lesions caused in humans by herpes simplex virus: various shapes of the lesions, their substructure and mechanisms behind them; morphological features of the healing p- cess, sequelae, complications, and some accompanying signs; and some rare cases. For those less familiar with the slit lamp image, I have added explanatory drawings to facilitate comprehension.

Progress in the development of surgical implant materials has been hindered by the lack of basic information on the nature of the tissues, organs and systems being repaired or replaced. Materials' properties of living systems, whose study has been conducted largely under the rubric of tissue mechanics, has tended to be more descriptive than quantitative. In the early days of the modern surgical implant era, this deficiency was not critical. However, as implants continue to improve and both longer service life and higher reliability are sought, the inability to predict the behavior of implanted manufactured materials has revealed the relative lack of knowledge of the materials properties of the supporting or host system, either in health or disease. Such a situation is unacceptable in more conventional engineering practice: the success of new designs for aeronautical and marine applications depends exquisitely upon a detailed, disciplined and quantitative knowledge of service environments, including the properties of materials which will be encountered and interacted with. Thus the knowledge of the myriad physical properties of ocean ice makes possible the design and development of icebreakers without the need for trial and error. In contrast, the development period for a new surgical implant, incorporating new materials, may well exceed a decade and even then only short term performance predictions can be made.

Many years ago, when ophthalmologists began to deal with the subject of ocular blood flow, a number of examination devices were developed: it all started with the Ophthalmo-Dynamometry device [ODM] from Mikuni and Yoneyama, followed by the Orbito-Dynamography device [ODG] from Hugo Hager.We entered this field with these two devices, and after years of intensive use of these measuring methods we were able to develop the Oculo-Oscillo-Dynamography device [OODG] and the Temporalis-Dynamography device [TDG], and with the further development of the OODG device the Ocular Pressure Blood Flow Analyzer device [OPFA] was created. The Oculo Pression Tonometry device [OPT] was practically created as a "by-product" during the OODG device development. In combination with the OODG or OPFA device and fluorescence angiography [FAG], Perfusion Pressure Video Angiography [PVA] became possible. All these techniques have greatly assisted us in our diagnostic efforts.We have gained many years of experience with the diagnosis of ocular hemodynamics and ocular hydrodynamics which we would like to share in this book.
