She realized that to help the people in Honduras she should start by educating this group of children, which would in turn embolden them to take control of their own lives as adults. The author's journey from charity to philanthropy included helping found the non-profit Honduras Children's Project, then getting to know and hiring local people to empower them to break the cycle of poverty for others in the area who most needed it.
