Modernismus

'In one short and sly book after another, [Levy] writes about characters navigating swerves of history and sexuality, and the social and personal rootlessness that accompanies both' AtlanticWho was Gertrude Stein?Avant-garde American poet and art collector who made her home in Paris, godmother of modernism, queer icon, friend to Picasso and Hemingway, self-declared genius - a writer who has baffled readers and critics for a century. And why does she matter? The narrator of Deborah Levy's latest, dazzling fiction has gone to Paris to find out. There she meets Eva with the blinding gaze, an artist in a long-distance marriage, and Fanny, a sexually adventurous financier; together they cook, walk, read and argue late into the nights. As Paris sweeps her along in its ceaseless flow, she thinks - about what we have to lose to become modern, navigating anxiety, living with uncertainty, angry fathers, making a new life in another country, art and language - how all these things looked to Gertrude Stein in the early days of the twentieth century, and how they look to her and her friends in the early twenty-first.This is a book about how we put ourselves together- an exhilarating, witty, cosmopolitan meditation on the pleasures and challenges of friendship, desire and living with other people. But it is also crashes through genre to create an inspired portrait of Stein herself: a writer who experimented fearlessly with a new way of living and who wrestled herself free from the nineteenth century to invent a brand-new way of looking at the world.SHORTLISTED FOR THE AMERICAN LIBRARY IN PARIS BOOK AWARD 2026

An engaging, approachable introduction to literary modernism

Modernism represented an astonishing outbreak of cultural innovation, spanning artforms and nations. It was centred around feelings of growing alienation in an industrial world, and a desire to change how people live together in society. Art, architecture, literature, and music all underwent a radical revolution.

Although it was confined to small coteries of artists and lasted no more than thirty years, its techniques were appropriated by mass culture and became familiar to millions of citizens who have never heard of Paul Klee or Gertrude Stein. It represents one of the most productive moments in art since the Renaissance, which in its scope, originality, and imaginative audacity has never been equalled.

Terry Eagleton presents a compelling and entertaining guide to modernism. From Ezra Pound to Virginia Woolf, James Joyce to H.D., Eagleton explores the literature and ideas of prominent modernists, emphasising the profound impact they had on subsequent generations.

Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, InspiringFrom the motorcar to the radio, modern technology radically transformed urban life by the first decade of the twentieth century. As one of Western Europe's least industrialized countries, Italy appeared impervious to such developments. It was this state of affairs at which the Futurist movement took aim. With its founding in 1909, the poet and impresario F.T. Marinetti called for a revitalization of aesthetic expression by means of "movement and aggression." A growing cadre of Futurist painters, poets, authors, and musicians exchanged Italy's cultural patrimony for new technologies, media, and metaphors, championing machine-propelled speed and its salutary hazards. Cubist painting, collage, and sculpture lent the Futurist campaign a revolutionary style to match its rhetorical fervor. Yet whereas Cubism remained a revolution of artistic form, Futurism sought to shatter the boundaries between art and life itself. Indeed, the movement's challenge to twentieth-century culture lay not in any specific set of images or objects, but a more comprehensive revolution of sensibility. By the mid-1910s there circulated several dozen Futurist proclamations on everything from men's clothing to set design, photography to film, dance to politics. That political impetus proved relentlessly paradoxical in origin and upshot. From its base in Milan, Futurist activity spread throughout the entire peninsula, while related movements emerged almost immediately in Moscow, Lisbon, Tiblisi, and Tokyo. Prefiguring and then propagandizing Fascist imperialism, Futurism also galvanized a range of progressive modernist phenomena. More than a century later, the "activist model" of the Futurist avant-garde remains deeply fraught in its historical implications. One of the Best Memoirs and Biographies of 2025 at The Guardian A revealing look at the life and writing of the great modernist. This biography explores the life and work of Katherine Mansfield, one of literary modernism's most significant writers. On the fringes of Bloomsbury, and friends with D. H. Lawrence, Aldous Huxley, T. S. Eliot, and many others, Mansfield was at the heart of literary London at its most experimental. By the time of her death in 1923, aged just thirty-four, she had broken boundaries and created new ways of writing that led her literary sparring partner Virginia Woolf to later admit that Mansfield's "was the only writing I was ever jealous of." Based on compelling new research, Gerri Kimber challenges previous conceptions surrounding the author's life, uncovers friendships and relationships formerly barely acknowledged, and offers innovative readings of Mansfield's most celebrated stories.

"It is a book to which we are all indebted" - T. S. Eliot

Ulysses is a literary tour-de-force by one of Ireland''s greatest ever writers. This stunning experimental novel tells the tale of a single day in the lives of Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus - 16 June 1904. Through these characters, he paints a portrait of society in early 20th century Dublin.

James Joyce draws heavily on Homer''s epic poem, The Odyssey, creating parallels between Bloom and Ulysses (Odysseus), Molly Bloom and Penelope (Ulysses'' wife) and Stephen Daedalus and Telemarchus.

Controversial when it was first released, Ulysses is now known as one of the most important works of modernist literature ever written. Eloquently written, extraordinarily ambitious and filled with literary allusions, Joyce''s novel rightly deserves its place atop the pantheon of modern literature.

This hardcover collector''s edition presents the unabridged text with a dust jacket and striking cover design.

An exploration of the modern European novel from a renowned English literature scholar Reading the Modern European Novel since 1900 is an engaging, in-depth examination of the evolution of the modern European novel. Written in Daniel R. Schwarz's precise and highly readable style, this critical study offers compelling discussions on a wide range of major works since 1900 and examines recurring themes within the context of significant historical events, including both World Wars and the Holocaust. The author cites important developments in the evolution of the modern novel and explores how these paradigmatic works of fiction reflect intellectual and cultural history, including developments in painting and cinema. Schwarz focuses on narrative complexity, thematic subtlety, and formal originality as well as how novels render historical events and cultural developments Discussing major works by Proust, Camus, Mann, Kafka, Grass, di Lampedusa, Bassani, Kertesz, Pamuk, Kundera, Saramago, Muller and Ferrante, Schwarz explores how these often experimental masterworks pay homage to the their major predecessors-discussed in Schwarz's ground-breaking Reading the European Novel to 1900-even while proposing radical departures from realism in their approach to time and space, their testing the limits of language, and their innovative ways of rendering the human psyche. Written for teachers and students by a highly-acclaimed scholar and including valuable study questions, Reading the Modern European Novel since 1900 offers a guide for a deeper understanding of how these original modern masters respond to both the past and present.

An investigation of Paris as an urban and a poetic site of remembrance. Urban space is an immediate experience of life as presence; it is also, at the same time, alive with memories of the past. . This edited volume investigates what it means to remember and how it is that Paris has come to embody the tensions of this feeling of seeing double. Surveying Paris in film, poetry and prose, from Baudelaire onwards, but also from Baudelaire backwards, it presents the city as both a concrete reality and as a collection of myths associated with it. Interdisciplinary and deeply researched, the essays distill complex concepts of the urban, the textual and the modern for a wide readership
