Howard Hanson's previously unpublished autobiography is now compiled and edited from manuscript sources, providing valuable insight into the life and work of this important American musician and educator.Howard Hanson was an American composer, conductor, and educator. Following his retirement as director of the Eastman School of Music, he worked intermittently for about a half-dozen years on an autobiography before abandoning the project. A Romantic Symphony: The Autobiography of Howard Hanson has been compiled and edited from various manuscript sources and now published as a valuable source of information concerning a man of wide influence in the music world of his time.Although an important composer, it is perhaps as an educator and advocate for American music that he should be most remembered. His early efforts to establish criteria for the Bachelor of Music curriculum and later for the development of a professional doctorate in music were among his most notable achievements. Of equal importance, however, was his support for the work of fellow American composers through his annual American Composers' Concerts and Festivals of American Music, which gave these composers opportunities to hear live performances of their works, often for the first time. Equally significant were Hanson's many recordings of American music that were issued on the RCA Victor, Columbia, and Mercury labels over a period of more than three decades. Hanson's autobiography is an important addition to our knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of this important figure in American music.

"At the age of 97 I am proud to share my story. It is dominated by music but with a few tragedies along the way"My happy routine of doing the job I loved was shattered in 1979 when the government decided to make cuts in spending on education and I was made redundant. The Seeley Primary School in Perry Road at Sherwood, Nottingham organised two concerts in appreciation of my 18 years service. The entertainment consisted of performances from former pupils of the school, a choir and an orchestra picked from the last ten years concerts. The Nottingham Evening Post reported the story, on Friday October 26, 1979 and included the picture printed below giving it the title "Bitter-Sweet School Harmony". The reporter wrote: "As a further indication of the popularity of Mrs Broughton. the shows - held on Wednesday and again last night (Thursday) were sold out for both nights". I finished with a blaze of publicity but felt unwanted and abandoned as I sat at home on my own. A fairy godfather smiled on me a few months later enabling me to continue my story.

In this fascinating and, at times, hilarious account of an improbable career, Ronnie Landau, classicist and modern historian, takes the reader from his beginnings in a small Jewish community in north-east England, to his diverse experience of teaching and lecturing in radically different educational settings.Whether it is his account of cutting his teeth in a rough-and-tumble north London comprehensive, being a visiting tutor in uber-posh Eton, running a massive department in Europe's largest adult education Institute, being visiting professor in a Canadian university, located in an exotic English castle, or enthusing about Greek civilisation aboard cruise ships, this book will inform, engage and entertain. This memoir also tells of the author's struggles to write about what he sees as the most important, universal messages of the Holocaust, and the intimidating demands of getting his first book published.Penetrating, thought-provoking and often irreverent, this rich assembly of ideas and observations will challenge the way we think about the worlds of education and identity, and of recent history itself."If you're very lucky, there will be two or three teachers over a lifetime who you can point to and say they shaped the way you see the world. For me, without hesitation, one of those is Ronnie Landau. Through him I learnt the modern history of the Jewish people, a knowledge which informs my thinking to this day. It was a privilege to be his student and it is a privilege to read his story."- Jonathan Freedland, Guardian columnist, broadcaster and author

Emma Violand-Sánchez knew little English when she arrived in Virginia from Bolivia in the summer of 1961 as a high school senior. In the decades that followed, she would lose a husband in Vietnam, raise two children as a single mother, and become a transformative figure in American public education and in service to immigrants and refugees, advocating for bilingual education and expanding opportunities for immigrant students and their families.Part testament to the power of suffering and faith and to the challenges women face across the world, Dreams and Shadows is also a meditation on politics, class, the immigrant experience, acculturation as a lifelong process, and the importance of maintaining bicultural identity against the myth of the American "melting pot." On a deeper level, it is also the story of a life lived in service-and about the ways that suffering and joy are contained each within the other, binding us all together across cultures and boundaries.

More than twenty years after teaching English to China's first boom generation at a small college in Sichuan Province, Peter Hessler returned to teach the next generation. At the same time, Hessler's twin daughters became the only Westerners in a student body of about two thousand in their local primary school. Through reconnecting with his previous students now in their forties - members of China's "Reform generation" - and teaching his current undergraduates, Hessler is able to tell an intimately unique story about China's incredible transformation over the past quarter-century.

In the late 1990s, almost all of Hessler's students were the first of their families to enrol in higher education, sons and daughters of subsistence farmers who could offer little guidance as their children entered a brand-new world. By 2019, when Hessler arrived at Sichuan University, he found a very different China and a new kind of student - an only child whose schooling was the object of intense focus from a much more ambitious and sophisticated cohort of parents. Hessler's new students have a sense of irony about the regime but mostly navigate its restrictions with equanimity, and embrace the astonishing new opportunities China's boom affords. But the pressures of this system of extreme 'meritocracy' at scale can be gruesome, even for much younger children, including his own daughters, who give him a first-hand view of raising a child in China.

In Peter Hessler's hands, China's education system is the perfect vehicle for examining what's happened to the country, where it's going, and what we can learn from it. At a time when relations between the UK and China fracture, Other Rivers is a tremendous, indeed an essential gift, a work of enormous human empathy that rejects cheap stereotypes and shows us China from the inside out and the bottom up, using as a measuring stick this most universally relatable set of experiences. As both a window onto China and a distant mirror onto our own education system, Other Rivers is a classic, a book of tremendous value and compelling human interest.
