German edition Villa Silberblick where a mentally deranged Friedrich Nietzsche spent the final years of his life, was originally a middle-class home. Nietzsche's sister Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche not only looked after her ill brother but also exploited the cult-like admiration the philosopher enjoyed for her own ends and installed the Nietzsche Archive in the building. Initially very popular amongst Europe's avant-garde later Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche allowed the archive to be instrumentalized by the National Socialists before it became a taboo topic in the GDR. Featuring many colored illustrations, the book relates the turbulent history of a memorial that reflects the ambivalence of modernism.

Mass housing and urban planning are a key element in North Korea's material foundation. In the post-war era, the country attempted to socialise all types of living spaces - from small apartment rooms to urban settings - based on political ideology. The idea that North Korea's political forces are brainwashing their people is superficial - as testimonies from many defectors have revealed.By exploring home culture and daily life, this book aims to capture the actual life of North Koreans, who have largely supported the country's unique dictatorial political system. To this end, it uses drawings, maps, and diagrams obtained from various archives. While these are neutral forms of communication, they also convey the actual intentions of North Korean architects and planners hidden behind the deceitful claims of political leaders.· The reconstruction of Pyongyang and Hamh¿ng· Piotr Zaremba and the urban planning of Chongjin· The creation of Kim Il-sung Square in Pyongyang· The emergence of mass housing in Post-War North Korea· The introduction of microdistricts in site planning· Socialisation of rural space in North Korea· The planning of Gwangbok Street New Town in Pyongyang· The development of the housing market

This book of two halves is at once a gallery of jaw-dropping modern Japanese buildings and an in-depth explanation of how the photographs of them were made. Japanese architecture fans are introduced in this book to the nine photographers who have been instrumental in shaping the way we view the country's spectacular post-war buildings. Through its pages we can 'visit' these astonishing structures through the eyes - and camera lenses - of these remarkable artists. But can documenting buildings in this way ever be entirely neutral? Author and Japanese architecture expert Ari Seligmann examines the post-Second World War evolution of architectural photography in Japan as a vehicle for considering both universal and particular issues in how we view the world around us through images. Through a veritable feast of exquisitely printed pictures, he grapples with the scope of architectural photography, recognising that it is more than making marketing images for architects and magazines, but not quite historical record. Combining photobook, biography, and architectural photo history, the book traces developments in one of the most exciting architectural contexts anywhere in the world. Japanese architecture is globally recognised through the circulation of architectural photographs, but Japanese architectural photographers have had almost no global recognition, until now. Profiled photographers: Yoshio Watanabe (1907-2000) ¿ Chuji Hirayama (1909-2005) ¿ Akio Kawasumi (1923-2007) ¿ Osamu Murai (1928-2016) ¿ Yukio Futagawa (1932-2013) ¿ Tomio Ohashi (1932-2017) ¿ Kiyoshi Takai (1938-) ¿ Shuji Yamada (1939-) ¿ Mistumasa Fujitsuka (1939-)

The architecture of the two Lucerne-based architects preserves the identity of established townscapes and settlements through its careful integration into the built environment and complements them with quality and care. BUILDING PARADISE IS A HOMAGE TO LANZAROTE - an island where architecture, nature and culture unite in a unique harmony. Fabian Freytag, one of Germany's most influential interior designers, weaves personal observations with an artistic exploration of place. Through photography, collage and essay, he reveals how lava, wind and light shape spaces that in turn form identity. Lanzarote thus becomes a living dialogue between humanity and landscape - raw, sensuous and timelessly modern.A book that understands design as an attitude, and aesthetics as an expression of awareness.

A showcase of Britain's most astonishing examples of High-Tech buildings from the late twentieth century and beyond. Like the Lotus Esprit, the Atari home computer and the sounds of the Roland TR-808 drum machine, the glossy colour, clip-on components and bristling silhouettes of High-Tech architecture provide a polaroid snapshot of 1980s modernity. High-Tech was an international style forged in Britain, taking inspiration from Victorian engineering and science fiction alike. Geraint Franklin traces its trajectory from 1960s radicalism to the global mainstream, taking in such late 20th-century landmarks as the Lloyds building, the Sainsbury Centre, the Schlumberger Cambridge Research Centre and the Eden Project in Cornwall.High-Tech Britain revisits the work of the 'big four' practices of Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, Michael and Patty Hopkins and Nicolas Grimshaw. From their teams emerged a younger generation of designers including Eva Ji¿i¿ná, Ian Ritchie, Richard Horden and Jan Kaplický who took the language in new directions. Alongside are profiled lesser-known stories such as the Patera kit building quietly rusting in London's Docklands and the workshop at Hooke Park, Dorset, engineered from waste wood. Illustrated with new photography by John East, High-Tech Britain is an authoritative survey of the most groundbreaking examples of this extraordinary moment in British architecture.'An essential guide to the big, shiny style that ruled modern Britain.' - Rowan Moore'How did buildings as bright and light as 8-bit computer games and eighties sports cars come to dominate our urban landscape? Geraint Franklin tells a fast-paced design story beside John East's glorious images, full of fun palaces, floating canopies and facades of gleaming perfection.' - John Grindrod'This is a book that is about more than nostalgia. It reminds us that there was a time when the future of architecture was full of possibilities.' - Deyan Sudjic'Geraint Franklin deftly summarises the architectural and engineering revolution of high-tech, exploring its roots, and setting its British-designed examples in a global context. He explains its 21st century transition into an ecologically aware movement that remains true to its original fascination with unconventional materials and kit-of-parts construction.' - Hugh Pearman'High-Tech is that most British of architectural fetishes, a collision of Victorian engineering and comic strip sci-fi, it was the UK's major contribution to modernism. This survey takes in the whole range of High Tech, from trad to rad, a wonderful homage to a period still surprisingly fragile and endangered.' - Edwin Heathcote

The housing shortage is a global problem that cannot be resolved through market-driven models of home ownership. This book, therefore, postulates a radical shift from house to housing and from the individual to the collective. The reintroduction of the term "collective" is here understood as a mechanism to refocus housing as a community-building, solidarity-building, and city-building activity. The book addresses the topic in four chapters-from alternative urban housing typologies and concepts of communal construction to historical models from which the current housing struggle can learn. The individual essays include examples from five different continents.

Delving into the harmony of tradition and modernity in Japanese residential architecture to reimagine the art of home design.

Life in Japan - and therefore also the culture of living - oscillates between two very contrasting poles: on the one hand, the tranquility of country life, surrounded by the sounds of nature, with tatami mats, sliding doors and engawa wooden verandas, and on the other, the frenetic dynamism of the metropolises and large cities with minimalist townhouses on narrow plots and sophisticated micro-apartments. It becomes exciting when these worlds of tradition and modernity meet and interact with each other in terms of design.

This volume offers a multifaceted overview of contemporary Japanese residential architecture and introduces the art of creating spaces that combine functionality and spirituality. It offers unique insights into the principles that make them so special and shows how living spaces are not only designed but also experienced. The selected projects invite to understand and reinterpret the essence of Japanese living cultures.

Based on collaborative research projects conducted at the Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio and ETH Zurich, it demonstrates – through various historical case studies from 1900 to the present – how the regulatory, legal, and normative frameworks influence the city physical and social conditions and vice versa. It also shows that these urban codes not only confirm the status quo and settle current conflicts, but also articulate visions for the city.
