This book is a revised version of the PhD dissertation written by the author at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in Italy. It presents a new approach to safety verification of a particular class of infinite-state systems, called Data-Aware Processes (DAPs). To do so, the developed technical machinery requires to devise novel results for uniform interpolation and its combination in the context of automated reasoning. These results are then applied to the analysis of concrete business processes enriched with real data.In 2022, the PhD dissertation won the "BPM Dissertation Award", granted to outstanding PhD theses in the field of Business Process Management.

Emerging machine learning techniques bring new opportunities to flexible network control and management. This book focuses on using state-of-the-art machine learning-based approaches to improve the performance of Software-Defined Networking (SDN). It will apply several innovative machine learning methods (e.g., Deep Reinforcement Learning, Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, and Graph Neural Network) to traffic engineering and controller load balancing in software-defined wide area networks, as well as flow scheduling, coflow scheduling, and flow migration for network function virtualization in software-defined data center networks. It helps readers reflect on several practical problems of deploying SDN and learn how to solve the problems by taking advantage of existing machine learning techniques. The book elaborates on the formulation of each problem, explains design details for each scheme, and provides solutions by running mathematical optimization processes, conducting simulated experiments, and analyzing the experimental results.

This book is the result of years of research following a realization of the mismatch of engineering skills produced by universities and those that industry required, based on the situation in Sub-Saharan Africa, equally applicable to other regions in Africa and indeed worldwide. The book is meant to assist engineering academics and engineers in industry to build capacity and cope with the dynamic trends in technology brought on by the 4th Industrial Revolution and to prepare for the 5th Industrial Revolution, an era predicted to be dominated by critical and system thinkers with creative and innovative skills as basic necessities. The book is also useful for policy-making researchers in academia, industrial and public sector researchers, and implementers in governments that provide required funding for the development of human resources and skills. The book primarily consists of the novel research and innovation approaches of modelling and building systems thinking sub-models which were ultimately integrated into the Universal Systems Thinking (UST) model aimed at improving the quality of engineers and engineering practice. The initiatives in this book include strategies for bridging the gap between industry and academia through systems thinking research. The book provides information on how to model, simulate, adjust and implement integrated systems thinking approaches to engineering education and training for capacity building and sustainability. The book also covers approaches to address research gaps and mismatch of skills while capitalizing on the successes of several projects carried out and supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering over the years.

This book presents the proceedings of the 24th International Conference Professional Culture of the Specialist of the Future. Professionals and experts in all fields need to be prepared to handle unfamiliar situations. Some of these are unexpected events that may occur quite suddenly out of the blue, and others may emerge in the course of technological development or predicted trends. In order to successfully confront the future, professionals therefore need to engage in hypothetical thinking as they entertain concrete scenarios or fictitious possibilities. Scientists and engineers lead the way when they employ thought experiments and systematically consider alternative realities. Educators come up with creative approaches to foster the "art of the as-if." This highly interdisciplinary collection of 50 papers discusses the theoretical challenge of hypothetical thinking and presents practical strategies for its promotion.

This book offers an in-depth investigation into the complexities of long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) in civil structures, specifically focusing on the challenges posed by small data and environmental and operational changes (EOCs). Traditional contact-based sensor networks in SHM produce large amounts of data, complicating big data management. In contrast, synthetic aperture radar (SAR)-aided SHM often faces challenges with small datasets and limited displacement data. Additionally, EOCs can mimic the structural damage, resulting in false errors that can critically affect economic and safety issues. Addressing these challenges, this book introduces seven advanced unsupervised learning methods for SHM, combining AI, data sampling, and statistical analysis. These include techniques for managing datasets and addressing EOCs. Methods range from nearest neighbor searching and Hamiltonian Monte Carlo sampling to innovative offline and online learning frameworks, focusing on data augmentation and normalization. Key approaches involve deep autoencoders for data processing and novel algorithms for damage detection. Validated using simulated data from the I-40 Bridge, USA, and real-world data from the Tadcaster Bridge, UK, these methods show promise in addressing SAR-aided SHM challenges, offering practical tools for real-world applications. The book, thereby, presents a comprehensive suite of innovative strategies to advance the field of SHM.

Cancer is the leading cause of mortality in most, if not all, countries around the globe. It is worth noting that the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2019 estimated that cancer is the primary or secondary leading cause of death in 112 of 183 countries for individuals less than 70 years old, which is alarming. In addition, cancer affects socioeconomic development as well. The diagnostics of cancer are often carried out by medical experts through medical imaging; nevertheless, it is not without misdiagnosis owing to a myriad of reasons. With the advancement of technology and computing power, the use of state-of-the-art computational methods for the accurate diagnosis of cancer is no longer far-fetched. In this brief, the diagnosis of four types of common cancers, i.e., breast, lung, oral and skin, are evaluated with different state-of-the-art feature-based transfer learning models. It is expected that the findings in this book are insightful to various stakeholders in the diagnosis of cancer.¿

The LNCS journal Transactions on Large-scale Data and Knowledge-centered Systems focuses on data management, knowledge discovery, and knowledge processing, which are core and hot topics in computer science. Since the 1990s, the Internet has become the main driving force behind application development in all domains. An increase in the demand for resource sharing (e.g. computing resources, services, metadata, data sources) across different sites connected through networks has led to an evolution of data- and knowledge-management systems from centralized systems to decentralized systems enabling large-scale distributed applications providing high scalability. This, the 53rd issue of Transactions on Large-scale Data and Knowledge-centered Systems, contains six fully revised selected regular papers. Topics covered include time series management from edge to cloud, segmentation for time series representation, similarity research, semantic similarity in a taxonomy, linked data semantic distance, linguistics-informed natural language processing, graph neural network, protected features, imbalanced data, causal consistency in distributed databases, actor model, and elastic horizontal scalability.

This book is a revised version of the PhD dissertation written by the author to receive her PhD from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. The work deals with one of the central objectives of the European Research Council project "Data-Driven Genomic Computing", i.e., building an integrated repository for genomic data. It reflects the research adventure that starts from modeling biological data, goes through the challenges of integrating complex data and their describing metadata and finally builds tools for searching the data empowered by a semantic layer. The results of this thesis are part of a broad vision: the availability of conceptual models, related databases, and search systems for both humans and viruses genomics will provide important opportunities for research, especially if virus data will be connected to its host, the human being, who is the provider of genomic and phenotype information. In 2023, the PhD dissertation won the CAiSE PhD Award, granted to outstanding PhD theses in the field of information systems engineering.
