Providing a survey of Anglophone African detective fiction, from the late 1940s to the present day, this study traces its history both as a literary form and a mode of critical exploration of the fraught sovereignties of the African state and its citizens.Since the late 1940s, African writers including Cyprian Ekwensi, Arthur Maimane, Adaora Lily Ulasi, Hilary Ng'weno, Unity Dow, Parker Bilal, and Angela Makholwa have published over 200 murder mysteries, police procedurals, spy thrillers, and other fictional narratives of investigation and discovery in English-language newspapers, magazines, and novels. Distributed widely across the continent's diverse cultural and political geographies, these texts share aesthetic characteristics and thematic preoccupations that reflect transnational networks of production, circulation, and influence. Anglophone African Detective Fiction, 1940-2020 surveys this literary history and examines how African writers have repeatedly harnessed the detective story to interrogate postcolonial realities of selfhood and the state. It argues that African writers have turned the detective story into a highly productive, while at the same time suspense-filled and entertaining, mode of social and political critique, first of colonialism and the independence era and latterly of neoliberal governance. Offering an overview of paradigmatic texts, from Ghana to Kenya and Sudan to South Africa, the book traces the contours of the history of Anglophone African detective fiction that is at once a cultural history of a uniquely African assessment of the ongoing problematics of sovereignty and decolonization.

Angezogen vom gewaltigen Strom Niger und dem legendären Timbuktu, der 'Königin der Wüste', dringt er tief in den 'dunklen Kontinent' vor. Parks Rückkehr am Weihnachtstag 1797 ist eine Sensation, seine Berichte machen ihn berühmt. Doch Park ruht sich auf seinem Ruhm nicht aus, er kommt in der Heimat nicht zur Ruhe, denn er ist dem Zauber Afrikas verfallen. Ermutigt durch den Erfolg seiner ersten Expedition unternimmt er 1805 entgegen vieler Warnungen eine zweite Reise. Diesmal gelangen nur seine Tagebücher zurück in die Heimat - er selbst bleibt in den Weiten Afrikas verschollen. Bei heutigen Reisen ins innerste Afrika ist aufgrund der politischen Lage oft noch Vorsicht geboten, trotzdem werden touristische Niger-Flussexpeditionen auf den Spuren Parks angeboten. In seinen lebendigen, eindrücklichen Schilderungen ist es möglich, sich lesend sicher dort zu verlieren, wo Mungo Park selbst verloren ging: auf der Lebensader Niger, im Herzen Afrikas.

Als der junge Reporter Henry Morton Stanley 1869 von seinem exzentrischen New Yorker Verleger ins Pariser Grand Hotel bestellt wird - wo er seinen Chef im Schlafanzug vorfindet -, ahnt er nichts vom gigantischen Ausmaß des abenteuerlichen Auftrags, der sein Leben verändern wird. Seine Mission, koste es was es wolle: von Sansibar aus an der Spitze eines hundertköpfigen Suchtrupps ins Innere des 'Schwarzen Kontinents' vordringen, um den verschollenen Afrikaforscher David Livingstone zu finden. Der Gewaltmarsch durch Dschungel und Savanne fordert seinen Tribut: ein Großteil von Stanleys Begleitern desertiert, meutert oder fällt Tropenkrankheiten zum Opfer. Nach acht lebensgefährlichen Monaten findet er am 10.11.1871 im kleinen Dorf Ujiji am Tanganjikasee endlich den von vielen bereits Totgesagten. Stanleys trocken-ironische Begrüßungsformel - 'Dr. Livingstone, nehme ich an?' - geht in die Geschichte ein. Der junge Reporter rettet dem berühmten Afrikaforscher das Leben und dank Livingstones Einfluss entwickelt sich Stanley später selbst zum renommierten Afrikaforscher. These two volumes on Estrogens, Progestins, and Their Antagonists repre­ sent a thematic extension of the series, Hormones in Health and Disease. The first publication in the series, Steroid Hormone Receptors: Basic and Clinical Aspects, focused on recent advances in the anatomy of steroid receptors and members of the steroid receptor superfamily. Consistent with the spirit of the series, the authors addressed issues of clinical significance of steroid receptor detection in hormone-related disorders. The second volume in the series, Hormones and Cancer, attempted a more direct examination of ac­ tions of hormones in cancerous tissues and cells. In these two volumes, which together form the third in the series, the editor, Dr. Edward Pavlik, has introduced a team of leading investigators engaged in research on various aspects of the steroids that regulate female reproductive physiology. Estrogens and progestins, the main components of the most widely used contraceptive pills, have found a variety of uses in clinical endocrinology. These volumes contain discussions that range from the introduction of novel hormonal ligands to hormonal antagonism by steroid analogs. Naguib Mahfouz (1911 -2006) is the only Arab writer to have been awarded the Nobel prize for literature. The author of thirty-five novels, fifteen collections of short stories, twenty-five film screenplays, numerous critical works, and in his later years over five hundred short fictions based on his dreams (partly published as The Dreams and Dreams of Departure by the AUC Press in 2004 and 2007), he has been hugely influential on several generations of Arab writers, and his books are now read in more than forty languages around the world. In its citation for the Nobel prize, the Swedish Academy of Letters noted that Mahfouz "through works rich in nuance--now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous--has formed an Arabic narrative art that applies to all mankind."
