Griechenland

Eine ganz andere Geschichte der Antike

1200 Jahre Antike eine goldene Zeit voller Weisheit, Schönheit, Tugend? Fehlanzeige!

This textbook was conceived and written under the authors' conviction that the feature of Greek grammar that lends itself most readily to understanding and discussion is syntax, especially the syntax of the verb and that such understanding has been unnecessarily complicated by the traditional use of a terminology derived more from the study of the Latin verb than the Greek. The principal feature of the Greek verb is no longer presented as that of "tense," a term that conflates and confuses questions of the time of an action relative to the act of speaking with ways of representing an action in itself. Rather, emphasis is placed on the latter feature, the aspect of a verb, both as a means of organizing the many forms that the verb can take and as a means of making comparatively simple sense of the multiplicity of syntactical rules that govern its use.

Volume One features twenty Lessons presenting basic Greek Grammar in a manner facilitating the early introduction of substantial and philosophically rich passages from Heraclitus Aeschylus, Xenophon, Aristotle, Euclid and especially Plato, each containing vocabulary, discussion and exercises to aid in retention and reinforcement. Volume Two contains extended readings, with grammatical and vocabulary notes, from Plato and Aristotle, including the complete dialogue Meno, as well as Appendices and comprehensive Vocabulary lists.

The two most distinctive Lessons in the text occur close to the beginning. Lesson Four presents the six features that determine any Greek verb-aspect (progressive, aorist or simple, perfect), "tense" (past, present, future), mood, voice, person, number)-through a discussion that is carried out mostly in English. At the end of the lesson, students are in possession of all the conceptual elements upon which the syntax of the Greek verb is based.

Lesson Five presents the Progressive System of the regular verb in all of its moods and voices. The burden of paradigms on the memory is lightened by means of an emphasis on analysis into a verb's formative elements and through the use of linguistic rules that show how seemingly diverse forms arise from common origins. This early presentation of the non-indicative moods allows the student to appreciate the verb as a conveyer, not only of facts, but of the speaker's doubts, wishes, speculations and feelings as well.

John Davie, co-author of Et Tu, Brute? turns his attention to Ancient Greece. With a foreword by Harry Mount.

Ancient Greek lives on in our culture in surprising ways. Sometimes funny - the word for an actor, hupokrites, gives us 'hypocrite'; sometimes beautiful - an astronaut is literally a sailor of the skies. And that's before we get to the myths which gave us our Achilles heel or our Midas Touch. And what about crocodile tears, which comes from the Greek's belief that crocodiles cried while eating their victims!

This is a learned but always entertaining journey through the world of the Ancient Greeks, their extraordinary language and how it has shaped our own understanding of the world today. After all, what is language but the frame through which we understand the world? Davie aims to bring more than just humour, he seeks to trace the thread of ancient Greek thought that runs through our own civilization, always with the lightness of touch and fascinating etymology. We meet Eros and Aphrodite, Alexander the Great and Oscar Wilde, the stoics, Epicurus and Sparta.

While this is a book about language and the touching and illuminating presence of the ancient Greeks in our current words, it's also about how Ancient Greece shapes our culture today.

While Menander has long stood as the emblematic figure of Greek New Comedy, recent scholarship has increasingly challenged this Menandrocentric view by re-examining the broader landscape of comic production in the late-Classic and Hellenistic period. This volume brings to the fore the fragmentary remains of Menander's contemporaries-such as Philemon, Diphilus, Apollodorus and others-offering new insights into their character typologies, linguistic style, and political engagement. Through philological, literary, and reception-oriented approaches, the contributions in this book reevaluate long-standing assumptions about the genre. The volume not only recontextualizes New Comedy within its historical and literary frameworks but also sheds light on its impact on Roman comedy. By expanding the canon beyond Menander, this study provides classicists, philologists, and literary historians with a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the genre's complexity and cultural significance.

Greek literature of the Roman Empire has long ago ceased to be treated as the fruit of pure imitation and unimaginative reproduction of literary models from the Classical age. Drawing from the conceptual and methodological agendas of modern fields such as narratology, cognitive studies, and linguistics, classicists have approached the authors of the Second Sophistic with a fresh eye and treat them as anything but lacking originality in the ways they chose themes and developed their compositional styles. Nevertheless, a great amount of the Imperial literature still remains significantly unexplored in terms of the ways literary genres evolved at those times and interacted with each other. Although rhetoric has left its mark on the literary production of this era, on the other hand, an abundance of other genres call for further comparative research. In this line of thought, the papers of this volume focus on how the literary goal-settings of Imperial Greek authors shaped the generic trends and physiognomy of current literary production, and penetrate more into the various co-existing and, very frequently, interactive modes of writing, in order to shed new light on the generic fusions operated in the Imperial Era on a literary level.

This book reorients the study of 'unbelief' in Ancient Greece by dismantling two persistent scholarly misconceptions: the portrayal of Greek atheism as a form of proto-modern secularity and the dismissal of the subject as merely a lexical dispute over definitions. By integrating a diverse range of philosophical, medical and epigraphical sources, the author contextualises irreligious stances within the discursive and social ecology that shaped Greek religiosity. Rather than representing an external negation of the divine, unbelief emerges as a historically specific modification of self-world relations. Leveraging relational sociology and contemporary Religious Studies, this analysis demonstrates how doubt, critique and denial took root within the fabric of lived ancient religion - from theatre and intellectual circles to civic conflict and the politics of impiety. The result is a transformative account of Greek unbelief and a transferable analytical model for future comparative and historical research.
