The Holy Land is more than a sanctified geographical space that roughly corresponds to the Roman province that has been known as Palaestina since the end of the Bar Kochba War. Instead, it is primarily an idea and imaginative space created by a complex interaction of texts, rituals, and material culture. The authors of this volume's contributions highlight the major role that extracanonical traditions - often misleadingly called apocryphal - which were written and read, celebrated and performed, and embodied in places, buildings, and material culture, have played in the construction of the Holy Land.

Cleopatra VII was more than the last Macedonian Queen of Egypt. She was a femme fatale of epic proportion, ensnaring the two mightiest Romans of her time, Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, with her famed beauty and intelligence. The story of Cleopatra reads like a modern thriller. From her murderous family, who were not averse to killing parents, siblings, and their own children, to the civil wars between Pompey, Caesar, Octavian Augustus, Brutus, and Mark Antony, the tale of this last queen of Egypt is filled with high drama, tension and, ultimately, tragedy. It is a story which, once started, is almost impossible to put down. This is possibly master storyteller Jacob Abbott's finest book.

This volume is the first to focus on the presentation of Ancient Egypt in video games. The contributions examine diverse topics concerning how Egyptian history, culture, monuments, and the land itself are portrayed across a diverse range of game genres. Over forty years of video games are analysed, including those from well-known franchises (Assassin's Creed; Tomb Raider), as well as those from independent developers. The games studied employ Ancient Egypt in different ways, as the main historical setting of the game, as the inspiration for the game's world, or as a point of reference for specific aspects of the game. Contributions by game designers from Oneiric Studios also reveal the motivations for using Egypt as the source for their game design and narrative (Path of Ra). The number of games discussed in this volume and their diversity demonstrates the important role that games play in shaping the popular imagination of Ancient Egypt.

From the decipherment of hieroglyphics in 1822 to the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon a hundred years later, the uncovering of Egypt's ancient past took place in an atmosphere of grand adventure and international rivalry. In A World Beneath the Sands, acclaimed Egyptologist Toby Wilkinson chronicles the ruthless race between the British, French, Germans, and Americans to lay claim to its mysteries and treasures. He tells riveting stories of the men and women whose obsession with Egypt's ancient civilization helped to enrich and transform our understanding of the Nile Valley and its people, and left a lasting impression on Egypt, too. Travelers and treasure-hunters, ethnographers and archaeologists: whatever their motives, whatever their methods, a century of adventure and scholarship revealed a lost world, buried for centuries beneath the sands.

'Brilliant and discursive'Antonia Fraser, Sunday Times'Hughes-Hallett's exemplary reappraisal ... throws a searching light on two thousand years of male erotic fantasy' Joan Smith, New StatesmanWinner of the FAWCETT PRIZEand EMILY TOTH AWARDIn the 2,000 years since her death, Cleopatra has been recreated over and over again by poets, artists and filmmakers, each time in a form that fits the prejudices, anxieties and yearnings of the age that produced it. To Chaucer she was the model of a good wife, while to Cecil B. DeMille she was 'the wickedest woman in history'.In this revised edition of Lucy Hughes-Hallett's award-winning cultural history, the real Cleopatra - one of the most powerful women in the ancient world - is skilfully revealed alongside a legion of imaginary counterparts and the sexual, racial and political messages they carry.

In this study, Romulus D. Stefanut offers a contextual reading of Philo's De vita contemplativa , exploring its background, genre, composition, and function beyond the so-called "apologetic and historical works" of Philo. Often, scholars have lost the hermeneutical focus of the treatise itself and have concentrated their attention solely on the historical existence of the Mareotic community described in the treatise, advancing arguments related to its historicity or lack thereof. The author therefore suggests that the purpose of De vitacontemplativa is meant to offer the best Jewish Alexandrine expression of a way of life, well-known from ancient Greek philosophy as the theoretical or contemplative life. It is composed in relation rather than opposition to the lost first half of the treatise, dedicated to the practical life of the Essenes. Simultaneously, there might be a friendly polemic between Philo's description of the Therapeutae versus the Essenes.

In the Book of Ezekiel, the term "midst/middle" appears with the highest frequency in any book of the Hebrew Bible. In line with Ancient Near Eastern ideas of cosmic order, the concept of "center - periphery" serves to illustrate the prophet's message of doom and restoration for 6th century Israel.

This compendium examines how the Spirit is depicted and functions in biblical texts and their historical and religious contexts, while also tracing the Spirit's discursive history from antiquity to today.

Inheriting a long tradition of veneration of the dead, the specific rite of the decadal theologies addressed to the deceased ancient Egyptian gods is the consecration of food (w¿¿ j¿.t) in conjunction with incens (sn¿r) and libation (qb¿w). The verbal locution sfsf ¿w(.t), which is the subject of this study, only emerged later and will remain more limited. It has long been associated with mortuary cult, particularly in the context of Theban decade rites, which flourished from the end of the 20th Dynasty to the beginning of the 21st Dynasty and developed further in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. On the basis of a corpus of evidence, La lustration des offrandes sfsf ¿w(.t) allows a better understanding of the specificities of this ritual act and its use by individuals and in divine temples. In the context of the pouring water acts (qb¿w), the act sfsf ¿w(.t) consists of purifying the (solid) offerings by lustration, i.e. sprinkling them with pure water.
