This books follows the rail freight throughout the Midlands, showcasing the locomotives used and the freight they carried.

The first of two volumes covering the railways of the South East, this book focuses mainly on Sussex but also includes small sections of Surrey and Kent. It concentrates on locomotive-hauled traffic and details a wide range of trains including inter-regional passenger, parcels and mail, fuel, heavy freight, test trains, engineers traffic, Rail Head Treatment Trains, Snow and Ice Treatment Trains, railtour excursions and the luxurious Orient Express. An extensive range of different liveries, many now consigned to history on the main line, are shown. There is also a small selection of DEMUs in some of the areas they once operated. Over 180 color photographs, the vast majority of which have never been published before, serve to illustrate some of the wonderful countryside to be found in this corner of England as well as the trains that run through it. They are complemented by informative captions detailing not only the trains themselves but also some of the infrastructure and features found along the routes covered.

The first book to provide a historical overview and stunning photography of train stations on five continents: Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, and The Americas! A lot has happened in the world of railroads since the first train station opened in Darlington, England almost 200 years ago. Today's railroad station buildings are as wonderfully diverse as their locations, ranging from what G. K. Chesterton called "cathedrals of the Industrial Revolution" springing up along high-speed rail lines, to charming country stops that rarely see a passenger. Features nearly 80 train stations, describing the use of rail transit on each continent and the story of each station More than 250 color photographs that make these train stations worth a second look Includes tunning aerial views Author Martin Welter spent his childhood and youth in Bebra and Hamm, Germany, and made frequent visits to the local steam locomotive depots. Later, he worked as an editorial assistant at Eisenbahn Magazin (Railway Magazine) and an editor at Eisenbahn Kurier, sharing his knowledge and love of trains and train stations. Monumental or modest, these transportation hubs have great appeal because they signal the prospect of escaping from everyday life. Distant destinations are beckoning! A perfect book for armchair travelers.

The years between 2006 and 2015 saw many changes in Central Scotland's railways with projects such as the rebuilding and reopening of the lines from Maryhill to Anniesland and the Larkhall branch, as well as the opening of the Stirling to Alloa and Kincardine line in 2008, followed by the Airdrie to Bathgate route in December 2010. Illustrated with over 150 color photographs, this volume looks at the transformation of the main route network in Central Scotland, over the ten-year period, detailing changing franchises, different liveries and new lines, locomotives and rolling stock.

The British Railways 'Pilot Scheme' orders of 1955 included ten BTH and ten NBL Type 1 locomotives, these being introduced during 1957-61 for use in East London, and on the Great Eastern and London, Tilbury & Southend lines. The BTH fleet subsequently expanded to forty-four, as a consequence of their light axle-loading and the availability of spare manufacturing capacity which BR chose to exploit in their quest to eliminate steam traction.Further construction of these two classes ceased after the fifty-four units, with preference being given to the highly reliable English Electric product which by mid-1962 had proliferated to 128 examples. The NBL fleet survived until 1968, being withdrawn after ten years of indifferent performance. The BTH locomotives followed by 1971, although four lingered on as carriage pre-heating units. Dramatic reductions in goods traffic during the 1960s/70s particularly impacted local trip and transfer freight duties, the 'bread and butter' work for the Type 1s, and it was inevitable that the less successful classes were retired from traffic first. This book looks at the short history of these two classes, making extensive use of archive sources, combined with the primary observations of numerous enthusiasts. Previously unpublished information, covering the introduction, appearance design and performance issues of the locomotives, form a central focus, and, allocations, works histories, storage and disposals, liveries and detail differences are covered in the same level of detail as previous volumes in the 'Locomotive Portfolio" series.

When you enter subway stations in Eastern Europe and in countries that were once part of the USSR today, time seems to stand still. The stations are chroniclers of the history and art of a long vanished world power. In this volume, photographer Frank Herfort presents around 20 metro systems of the Soviet era from Moscow to Bucharest, from Baku to Tbilisi. His focus is on the details, capturing over 700 works of art with his camera. They were conceived as prestige projects, thousands of kilometers apart and created under different conditions in different times. The stations in his photographs come together to form a holistic and comprehensive representation of socialist art that does not stand alone but relates to the everyday life of people today.

Railroads played a critical role in the development of the Eastern Shore for over a century. The history of the Delmarva Peninsula is inextricably entwined with the story of its railroads, the earliest of which were short, locally-funded lines. The dream to connect Norfolk directly to eastern seaboard cities farther north was first realized by the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad in the 1880s. The line ran north-south along the peninsula to Cape Charles City, Virginia, where freight cars were loaded onto barges for the trip across the Chesapeake Bay. This line was eventually absorbed by the giant Pennsylvania Railroad, and the ferry service was eclipsed when the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel was completed in 1964. Regional historian Lorett Treese tells the story of these railroads and the development they brought to the Eastern Shore.

The Northern Central Railway (NCR), completed to Sunbury in 1858, was a Class 1 railroad that connected Baltimore City, Maryland, to Sunbury, Pennsylvania. In 1861, the Pennsylvania Railroad acquired controlling interest in the railway. It became such a vital transportation link during the Civil War that it had to be guarded constantly by Union forces. In June 1972, Tropical Storm Agnes heavily damaged much of the NCR right-of-way in Pennsylvania and all but destroyed the right-of-way in Maryland. Then under control of Penn Central, it was decided to repair only the tracks in Pennsylvania and abandon the Maryland section from Cockeysville to the Maryland state line. The majority of the route in Maryland is now the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail in Baltimore County, and the portion in York County, Pennsylvania, is now the Heritage Rail Trail. The extreme southern end of the line from Baltimore City to Cockeysville in Maryland is now used by MTA-Baltimore Light Rail system.

The Delmarva Peninsula's railroad history is marked by its early lines that spurred local growth and prosperity by connecting rich farmland, seafood, and woodlands to markets.Starting with one of the oldest railroad lines in the United States, the Delmarva Peninsula holds a unique place in the history of railroading in the country.Prior to the advent of the "iron horse," the area had seen little growth in population and was struggling to get goods to market, as well as supplies brought into the area. The three states that make up the area--all of Delaware and the eastern shores of Maryland and Virginia--were known to have some of the best fields and orchards, a bountiful seafood harvest, and some of the richest woodlands in America. The area flourished with the introduction of the railroad. While passenger service was certainly a part of the railroad's plans, make no mistake, it was these riches that made the area swell with people while small towns became flush with income. Some of the most profitable divisions of the railroad industry were based on the Delmarva Peninsula.
