Paris Spleen is one of the first modern books--formally experimental, morally ambivalent, and relentlessly urban. Written in the 1850s, these fifty prose poems roam through the streets of Paris with unsparing detail and a deeply ambivalent gaze. Baudelaire captures daily life as something both intoxicating and absurd, filled with strange encounters, sudden violence, fleeting beauty, and constant noise. This is not poetry in the usual sense, but something sharper and more elastic: compact narratives, snapshots, observations, and provocations.Baudelaire moves quickly between tones--satirical, melancholic, brutal, philosophical--without ever losing control. Paris Spleen speaks in the voice of a man both of the city and estranged from it, and it remains one of the most influential works of the 19th century: vivid, darkly comic, and permanently contemporary.

This is the book's first edition, with poems presented in their original form, many of them written in the author's teenage and early adult years, giving readers a candid look into her early voice and artistic development. The tone is predominantly unfiltered, emphasizing authenticity over polish, which enhances the relatability and raw appeal of the work. This approach provides a unique, immersive experience of youth seen through the lens of poetic expression.

"Full of heart and wisdom, Daughters of Latin America sheds a brilliant light on Latine and Caribbean women writers across time, space, languages, and genres."-World Literature TodaySpanning time, styles, and traditions, a dazzling collection of essential works from 140 Latine writers, scholars, and activists from across the world-from warrior poet Audre Lorde to novelist Edwidge Danticat and performer and author Elizabeth Acevedo and artist/poet Cecilia Vicuña-gathered in one magnificent volume. Daughters of Latin America collects the intergenerational literary voices of Latine women across time and space, capturing the power, strength, and creativity of these visionary writers, leaders, scholars, and activists-including 24 Indigenous voices. Several authors featured are translated into English for the first time. Grammy, National Book Award, Cervantes, and Pulitzer Prize winners as well as a Nobel Laureate and the next generation of literary voices are among the stars of this essential collection, women whose work inspires and transforms us. An eclectic and inclusive time capsule spanning centuries, genres, and geographical and linguistic diversity, Daughters of Latin America is divided into 13 sections representing the 13 holy moons, each cycle honoring a different theme. Within its pages are poems from U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón; lyric essays from New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Acevedo, Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes, and Guggenheim Fellow Maryse Condé; rousing speeches from U.S. Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, and Lencan Indigenous land and water protector Berta Caceres; and a transcendent Mazatec chant from shaman and poet María Sabina testifying to the power of language as a cure, which opens the book. More than a collection of writings, Daughters of Latin America is a resurrection of ancestral literary inheritance as well as a celebration of the rising voices encouraged and nurtured by those who came before them. In addition to those mentioned above, contributors include Elizabeth Acevedo, Julia Alvarez, Albalucia Angel, Marie Arana, Ruth Behar, Gioconda Belli, Miluska Benavides, Carmen Bouollosa, Giannina Braschi, Norma Cantú, Ana Castillo, Sandra Cisneros, Ingrid Rojas Contreras, Angie Cruz, Edwidge Danticat, Julia de Burgos, Lila Downs, Laura Esquivel, Conceição Evaristo, Mayra Santos Febres, Sara Gallardo, Cristina Rivera Garza, Reyna Grande, Sonia Guiñasaca, Georgina Herrera, María Hinojosa, Claudia Salazar Jimenez, Jamaica Kincaid, María Clara Sharupi Jua, Amada Libertad, Josefina López, Gabriela Mistral, Celeste Mohammed, Cherrié Moraga, Angela Morales, Nancy Morejón, Anaïs Nin, Achy Obejas, Alejandra Pizarnik, Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro, Elena Poniatowska, Laura Restrepo, Ivelisse Rodriguez, Mikeas Sánchez, Esmeralda Santiago, Rita Laura Segato, Ana María Shua, Natalia Toledo, Julia Wong, Elisabet Velasquez, Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, Helena María Viramontes, and many more.

In the powerful and eclectic poetry of Tomás Modesto Galán, the clash of cultures, landscapes, and experiences unfolds in vivid, sometimes surreal imagery. With a career spanning over three decades, his poetry emerges as a bridge between the Dominican Republic and New York, capturing the complexities of identity, migration, and the struggles of urban life. In this essential anthology, which spans a wide array of poetic forms and themes, Galán's voice rings out with the urgency of a submachine gun's shot-sharp, relentless, and full of humanity. From the depths of lyricism to biting social critique, Galán explores the contradictions of life in crisis, blending the influences of surrealism, German expressionism, and Dominican folklore to create a poetry that knows no borders. This collection offers a comprehensive look at the evolution of a poet whose work is as limitless as the cultures it reflects, drawing on the vivid memories of his homeland and the realities of his adopted city. Whether confronting the idealism of the American dream or dissecting the cultural politics of his native country, Galán's work challenges and transcends literary conventions. His poetry, born from a deep sense of place, speaks to anyone caught between worlds-at once personal, universal, and unapologetically bold.

A memorable debut collection that explores colonial and generational trauma. In this striking debut, Dorsía Smith Silva explores the devastating effects of Hurricane María in Puerto Rico, highlighting the natural world, the lasting impact of hurricanes, and the marginalization of Puerto Ricans. These poems also focus on the multiple sites of oppression in the United States, especially the racial, social, and political injustices that occur every day. Smith Silva writes with a powerful, gripping voice, confronting the "drowning" of disenfranchised communities as they are displaced, exploited, and robbed of their identities, but remain resilient. Written with unflinching language and vivid imagery, In Inheritance of Drowning reveals the many facets of the lives of marginalized people.
Pimping My Trauma is a courageous poetry collection that serves as a defiance of the stigma of having sexual trauma. This book challenges the social norm of a blue-collar environment where sexual survivors silence themselves in fear of being seen as defects in a non-benevolent society. As a survivor, the poet speaks through this collection about the need for intimacy and control, while wrestling with identity and self-deprivation. This collection of poems results in living life afloat with a desperate need to be grounded and reclaim power.

A radically open interrogation of queer Chicano identity

In his fourth poetry collection, JosÉ Antonio RodrÍguez investigates how one constructs a relationship to the self, to community, and to poetry itself. The Day's Hard Edge is composed of three sections, the first of which situates the reader in the speaker’s world, one marked by multiple forms of trauma. Here are the contours of the Texas/Mexico borderlands where the speaker’s initial sense of self and community emerges. The second section broadens in scope and considers the potential and limitations of poetry as a site for meaning-making. The third section brings the speaker to a new understanding of the poem as it relates to the transformative and destabilizing experience of trauma. Ultimately this book lays bare an individual and, in doing so, shows how poetry acts as a place of succor and vulnerability for one’s very identity. Together these poems explore what it means to be queer, immigrant, and Chicano.
