The Grail legends have been appropriated by novelists as diverse as Umberto Eco and Dan Brown yet very few have read for themselves the original stories from which they came. All the mystery and drama of the Arthurian world are embodied in the extraordinary tales of Perceval, Gawain, Lancelot and Galahad in pursuit of the Holy Grail. The original romances, full of bewildering contradictions and composed by a number of different writers, dazzle with the sheer wealth of their conflicting imagination. In Nigel Bryant's hands, this enthralling material becomes truly accessible. He has constructed a single, consistent version of the Grail story in modern English which reasserts its relevance as one of the great and enduring works of literature. NIGEL BRYANT's previous Arthurian books include The High Book of the Grail (Perlesvaus), Chretien de Troyes' Perceval and its Continuations, and Robert de Boron's Merlin and the Grail.

This is the first truely critical edition of Chrétien de Troyes's "Perceval" and will replace the often inaccurate text of Hilka (1932). This new edition is based on ms. Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, fr. 12576 (T), but is moderately interventionist in its attempt to approximate more closely to the ipsissima verba of Chrétien; the critical text is accompanied by complete variants from the other manuscripts. The critical apparatus includes full descriptions of all the manuscripts of "Perceval", an examination of the manuscript transmission of the text, and of the language of the scribe of T and of Chrétien; the notes contain a running commentary on the manuscript tradition and a justification of every emendation made to the text of T. The edition concludes with a full glossary.

Charles Williams has achieved considerable reputation for his novels. He has been recognized as a brilliant theologian and a sensitive literary critic. But Williams himself wished most to be remembered as a poet, and trusted his future literary reputation to the two-volume series of poems on the Arthurian theme, ""Taliessin Through Logres"" and ""The Region of the Summer Stars"". Of the first volume Williams wrote: ""The matter and the style require and reward attention. The poems do not so much tell a story or describe a process as express states or principles of experience. The names and incidents of the Arthurian myth are taken as starting-points for investigation and statement on common and profound experiences"". In this first full-length study of these poems, they receive, in both matter and style, the close attention that Williams requested. The emphasis in this study is on the quality of these poems as poetry and only secondarily upon their religious content. Although essentially Christian, they are placed within the context of the multifaceted, many-changing forms of recurring myths. Times they represent one of the few attempts in the twentieth century to encapsulate an age-old ever-recurring ""pattern in the web"" in a brilliant structure that is thoroughly modern.
