Phantasmagoria
Phanatasmagoria is a political play exploring how power, censorship and tradition can silence debate.Mehrosh, a celebrated student activist has been invited to an isolated house in the middle of a forest to take part in a debate with a powerful political adversary from the ruling party. It's a chance to make her voice heard.Fearful of the coming conflict, surrounded by eerie shadows and mysterious noises, and increasingly uncertain of what she is told, Mehrosh starts to feel a growing paranoia that the people around her are not what they seem...Phantasmagoria explores the dangers of divisive politics and unbridled social media to show how fear can be manufactured and manipulated with chilling consequences.SHORTLISTED FOR THE HINDU PLAYWRIGHT AWARDREVIEWS(ayoungishperspective.co.uk)"There's a central theme that sadly will be forever prescient - although seems particularly apt now - about the nature of politics and the culture wars and cult of personality that dominate them, and 'Phantasmagoria' is an uncomfortable peek behind that curtain. Despite being set in an unnamed country, it's easy to imagine it and place it geographically - and no huge mental leap to see any country descending into the same state."Uncaging the Leopard - Phantasmagoria at the Belgrade Theatre (elementarywhatson.com)"Deepika Arwind is not terribly hopeful about the world right now. That much is clear. But maybe it is only 'in first contouring the dismay she feels', 'we can start to think of what the path out of the darkness looks like.' Maybe the debate itself will look all together different to the preceding dialogue. That's for the audience to imagine with renewed hope."Playwright Deepika Arwind on 'Phantasmagoria' at Southwark Playhouse (strandmagazine.co.uk)Kali's PHANTASMAGORIA by Deepika Arwind Comes to Southwark Playhouse Borough (broadwayworld.com)ABOUT THE AUTHORDeepika Arwind is an award-winning international playwright originally from Bangalore whose work has been presented across India, Europe and the USA. The Empress
Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, 1887.

At East London's Tilbury Docks, Rani Das and Abdul Karim, step ashore after the long voyage from India. One has to battle a society who deems her a second-class citizen; the other forges an astonishing entanglement with the ageing Queen Victoria who finds herself enchanted by stories of an India over which she rules, but has never seen.

Through narrative, music and song, The Empress blends the true story of Queen Victoria's controversial relationship with her Indian servant and 'Munshi' (teacher), Abdul Karim, with the experiences of Indian ayahs who came to Britain during the 19th century. With private romance being mapped onto world history, the action cuts between the ship and different royal residences, offering bright contrasts as well as surprising affinities. In doing so, the play uncovers remarkable unknown stories of 19th-century Britain and charts the growth of Indian nationalism and the romantic proclivities of one of Britain's most surprising monarchs.

The Empress, which premiered at Stratford-upon-Avon's RSC in 2013, is published here as a Methuen Drama Student Edition with commentary and notes by Professor Jane Garnett, Wadham College, University of Oxford, UK.

Dramatic History of India
"Dramatic History of India" is a 1917 work by Flora Annie Steel (1847 - 1929). Steel was an English writer who notably lived in British India for 22 years and is best remembered for her books set or related to the sub-continent. In this volume, Steele offers a detailed history of India based upon its literature and dramatic works, including the Mahabharata and many others. This volume will appeal to those with an interest in Indian history and literature, and it would make for a fantastic addition to collections of allied literature. Contents include: "The Promised Land", "The Mahabharata", "The Parricides", "Great Conqueror", "The Rivals", "The Indian Constantine", "A House Not", "Made With Hands", "The Golden Age", "The Giftings Of The King", "The Idol-Breaker", "The Resistance Of The Rajputs", etc. Other notable works by this author include: "Tales of the Punjab" (1894), "The Flower of Forgiveness" (1894), and "The Potter's Thumb" (1894). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.

The Tempest
The Tempest is one of Shakespeare's most popular plays, both in the classroom and in the theatre, and this revision brings the Arden 3 edition right up-to-date. A completely new section of the introduction discusses new thinking about Shakespeare's sources for the play and examines his treatment of colonial themes, as well as covering key productions since this edition was first published in 1999. Most importantly it looks at Julie Taymor's ground-breaking 2010 film starring Helen Mirren as "Prospera."

Alden and Virginia Vaughan's edition of The Tempest is much valued for its authority and originality and their revision brings it up-to-date, making it even more relevant and useful to students and theatre practitioners.
