'If you have yet to explore her cosmic music, begin, as Andy Beta did, with Journey in Satchidananda, then open this detailed and illuminating biography. And prepare to be transported' OBSERVER'This book is one to cancel all your plans and really sink into . . . rich and textured' SHORTLISTMusician, wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, collaborator, guru, iconoclast: Alice Coltrane is one of the most forward-looking yet misunderstood artists of the last fifty years. For most of her life - and even in the decades since her passing - she was seen merely as the widow of the late John Coltrane, one of jazz's 'great men' who has long been worshipped with an almost religious fervour and devotion. Yet ever so slowly, that level of love and appreciation is also being bestowed upon Alice. Her influence can be felt on new generations of musicians, especially women, people of colour and artists who seek to combine jazz with other musical forms. In Coltrane's music, we can observe the transformation of Black American music in microcosm: the gospel roots giving rise to jazz and bebop, then intermingling with soul and R&B, then onto rock, modern classical, psychedelia and new age.Cosmic Music is both the first full-length biography of Alice and a long-overdue corrective to the historical and critical record. Based on extensive research and scores of new interviews by acclaimed music journalist Andy Beta, it is the definitive account of a visionary whose influence is only just beginning to be appreciated in full.'A spiritually moving, epic love story for the ages' JAZZ TIMES'Andy Beta has a lyrical sense of the ideological mountains the couple were trying to scale with their work' NEW STATESEMAN

Oriental Jazz Improvisation: Microtonality and Harmony is a comprehensive comparative study that explores the incorporation of Turkish, Arabic, and North Indian scales and modes into jazz improvisation and modulation. The book includes a multitude of scales and modes from these music cultures, along with their transpositions. These scales and modes are essential for any musician interested in South-Western Asian or North Indian music. Besides, the book delves into numerous scales and modes from other cultures' folk music, such as Greek rebetiko, Bulgarian wedding music, or Jewish music, highlighting parallels and similarities among these diverse music traditions. Each scale and mode is presented in its purest - microtonal - form, including the exact interval values in the particular tuning used in the classical Turkish, Arabic, or North Indian music tradition. Additionally, the basics of the respective music theories are imparted. Further, the genuine scales and modes are transcribed into equal temperament and several practical techniques are shown how to apply them in a jazz context.

Volcanic Tongue presents the first ever collection of multi-award-winning author David Keenan's music writings. In Chasin' the Sound: Learning Jazz Improvisation through Historical Models, authors Brian Levy and Keith Waters use solos by famous jazz musicians to outline a melodic and rhythmic vocabulary of jazz improvisation. In contrast to mainstream approaches based on rote memorization and generic chord/scale pedagogies, Chasin' the Sound encourages hands-on learning with activities that highlight the intangible yet key aesthetics of sound, groove, and feel. By studying jazz fundamentals alongside well-known examples of those fundamentals in practice, students and instructors will gain a broader and more meaningful understanding of the art of improvisation. In addition to exploring the mechanics of what to play, Levy and Waters offer ideas on how to play the essential roles of timekeeping, comping, and soloing, and how to develop routines within these roles. Supported by classroom-tested exercises and hundreds of original annotated music examples, students will learn the core rhythmic and melodic tenets of jazz while studying and playing along with the improvised solos and accompaniments of Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, Lester Young, Sarah Vaughan, Bud Powell, Clifford Brown, Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, Red Garland, Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins, among many others. Throughout, Levy and Waters show that great soloists and accompanists do not in fact have an unlimited vocabulary but rather use limited melodic and rhythmic resources as modules for infinite recombination.Written for all experience levels, Chasin' the Sound is a substantial workout for students and instructors to build chops and knowledge along the way.

This elegant volume is a portrait gallery of 50 eminent legends spanning jazz history, from Jelly Roll Morton, perhaps the inventor of the art form, to contemporary axman Joe Lovano, who contributes a foreword.

Arguably America’s most profound cultural contribution, jazz has evolved for over a hundred years since its birth in the ethnic gumbo of New Orleans at the dawn of the 20th century. Like a mighty river, it has wended its way over time through geography, style, and mood, forming numerous tributaries along the way. In this reissue, each figure is featured in handsome vintage photographs and a pithy, revealing biography.

In the 1920s, novelty piano playing was all the rage, made popular by Victor Records and the Q.R.S. player-piano rolls that people enjoyed all across America. The prime composer of this music was piano genius Zez Confrey, who wrote his Ten Lessons for Piano for musicians who wanted to play in this new, jazzy style. The course was in print for decades, and thousands of copies were sold. Unfortunately, the course was printed on cheap paper that would soon become damaged and then discarded. Today, the course is almost impossible to find. For that reason, Waking Lion Press has republished this classic work that will keep your toes tapping and your fingers flying across the keys.Confrey wrote, "In the preparation of this volume. the author had two aims in view: first, to produce a series of lessons that would, with proper application and study, develop the technical ability of the student to a marked degree; and second, to embody in each lesson sufficient musical attraction to eliminate the monotony usually associated with studies that may have been created for a similar purpose. Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of piano playing may pursue these lessons with definite results: time-worn methods usually employed to attain such results have been avoided."The author hopes that this work will be accepted by his many friends as a tribute to their helpfulness, and that its object, which is to be of real benefit to his co-pianists, be realized. If these results are achieved, he will feel well satisfied with his effort."
