Text in English and Dutch.

Through his photographs of swirling swarms of starlings - murmurations - photographer Erik Hijweege explores the impressive drama of the natural world. In this series of images, he captures flocks of starlings as they form and reform in the Dutch sky. Often they present as familiar shapes, such as fish, or swans, that can best be seen when captured in photographs. In the accompanying text, art historian Maartje van den Heuvel compares Hijweege’s images to the cloudy skies in 17th century Dutch painting. Nature journalist Koos Dijksterhuis explains why starling swarms occur, and explains the wonderful choreography of this breath-taking natural phenomenon. This work was exhibited at the Nature Museum Fryslan in Leeuwarden.

Text in English and Dutch.

Amerikana - concerning or characteristic of America, its civilization, or its culture; broadly, this is typical of America. In a series of photographs, many of which are frequently paired, Mark John Ostrowski provides a series of photographs that places doubt on the ability of any one, or even a series of photographs, to broadly typify a culture. The background story is that Ostrowski was born in America, but moved to Spain many years ago, and has returned to America to investigate memories and a place that is no longer home. Many of his paired photographs provide contrasting viewpoints to a similar subject and investigates the broad diversity and contradictions that can be found in any culture, least a country as expansive as America. His photographs show in a documentary style the upbeat with the despondent, the light and airy as opposed to the dark and moody situations. Ostrowski's photographs are but save for one color photograph, black and white. The outside borders indicate that the photographs may have been made by either a view camera or medium format camera, but nevertheless of the type of camera, there is spontaneity within the photographs, and usually a direct contact between the photographer and his subject. Ostrowski is a street photographer with a practiced eye for both the humorous as well as the poignant situations and has created an interesting narrative about Amerikana. Introductory essay by Antonio Molinero Cardenal with the text provided only in Spanish.

With Surf Tribe, photographer Stephan Vanfleteren shows that there is far more to surf culture than just sport and competition. Surfing is also about a deep admiration and respect for the ocean, as well as the feeling of insignificance when confronted with the forces of nature. Surfers use the waves for fun, but also to forget and to battle, both with others and with themselves.

Vanfleteren looks beyond the traditional borders of the United States and Australia and searches the globe for people who live in places where sea and land meet. He documents a fluid community, with nature as its sole leader. He has sought out young talent, living icons, and old legends, both competitive and free surfers.

The photographs here are serene black and white portraits in Vanfleteren's well-known, haunting style; as always, he reaches below the surface and goes to the core of his subjects. Included, amongst many others, are Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez, John Florence, Mickey Munoz, Filipe Toledo and Stephanie Gilmore.

Surfer, journalist, and actor Gerry Lopez has contributed the Foreword.

Surf Tribe has been exhibited in Knokke-Heist (Belgium), Kunsthal Rotterdam (Netherlands), Gallery Kahmann Amsterdam (Netherlands). The next exhibition will be in June 2019 in France. If you are interested in the stories behind the book, go to: www.surftribe.be

Nan Goldin's deeply personal exploration of female trauma and resistance. Sisters, Saints and Sibyls is a tribute 'to all rebellious women struggling to survive in society.' Focusing on the tragic life of her sister, Barbara, Nan Goldin weaves together a tapestry out of medical records, family photographs and mythical allusions to Saint Barbara to compose a haunting meditation on the mistreatment of female mental health in the twentieth century. Barbara's story is intertwined with Goldin's own descent into, and emergence from, addiction, shining a brutal light on the realities of trauma, abuse and mental illness. One of Nan Goldin's most important series, this timely publication is set to align with a major career retrospective opening at the Grand Palais, Paris, in March 2026.

Photography is an invitation to dance with life. It is seeing, sensing, and feeling every moment. It is playing with light and capturing what it matters. Photography is a time machine, a return ticket to the past. It is a precious moment of Now. It is a glance to the future. It is a connection with others. Photography is also a way of a wizard. Sometimes, we can capture things that we cannot see with the naked eye. We can capture a split-second movement, a shape and form that we would not see without a camera. Light is a delightful book that will surprise you and awe you and will expand your world in seeing and imagination. It will invite you to play even on a rainy day or in the darkness of the night. The book Light is filled with photographs of light. Some photos have subtle messages of inspiration. The book will encourage you to connect with others. Nowadays, we use devices and computers to communicate. It should not replace face-to-face connection and deep conversations or human touch. It talks about the benefits of natural light, as opposed to screen (blue) light that can have ill effects on us. Spending time outside can open a brand-new world of light and wonder. Natural light and nature can make a huge difference on our overall health. We can find magic anywhere if we open our eyes and hearts to see it. All we must do is to silence our minds, spend time in nature, be present and look around us. Light not only gives us hope, but also opens our eyes and hearts to what is possible.
