Although modern medicine has improved the survival rate of many cancer types, cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the USA.2 It is estimated that 1,898,160 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in 2021 in the USA, with 608,570 patients succumbing to the disease.2 The overall mortality rate of cancer patients is dependent on type of cancer, incidence, stage of diagnosis, and efficacy of available treatments.2,3 For example, USA cancer mortality rates peaked in 1991 (215 cancer deaths per 100,000 cases) due to the smoking epidemic, which resulted in high incidences of lung cancer (until recently, the most common cancer), but a reduction in smoking habits have seen an improvement in both lung cancer mortality and overall cancer mortality.2,3 Furthermore, numerous treatment breakthroughs have significantly reduced mortality in specific cancers, such as melanoma.

When Karen Ingalls was diagnosed with Stage IIC ovarian cancer, she realized that as a woman and a retired nurse she knew very little about this "silent killer." Given a 50% chance to live 5 years, she made a vow to let women know about ovarian cancer and to live each moment with love. Lost in the information about drugs, side effects, and statistics, Ms. Ingalls redirected her energy to focus on the equally overwhelming blessings of life, learning to rejoice in each day, and find peace in spirituality. In this book, the reader will find a refreshing perspective of hope with the knowledge that "the beauty of the soul, the real me and the real you, outshines the effects of cancer, chemotherapy, and radiation."

Bodies Unbound is a comparative study showing how ideologies of gendered bodies shape medical care and the ways in which patients respond to these ideologies through decisions about their bodies using three cases: transgender men seeking preventative gynecological care, cisgender men diagnosed with breast cancer, and cisgender women with breast cancer who elect to undergo prophylactic mastectomies. Bodies Unbound is a story about how the relationship between bodies and gender becomes socially intelligible as well as how medical professionals use their position of relative authority over bodies to dictate which combinations of bodies and genders are legitimate or not. Drawing on the experiences of individuals whose bodies and gender identities don't match medical and social expectations for gynecological and breast cancer care, Sledge unravels the taken-for-granted alignment of bodies and gender that provide the foundation of medical care in the United States.

CANCER - The mere mention of this word invokes fear or dread. Most would not include the words adventure, joy, peace, or gratitude to describe their emotional reaction. This book is about a journey "through" cancer and the experiences encountered. There are: - times of confusion and times of clarity- times of pain and times of comfort - feelings of helplessness and those of being blessed <BR> The author says, "All through the journey, I have been guided by God's whispers keeping me grounded in the knowledge that He desires full and complete recovery in my life and yours." This is a journey of joy and frustration which will hopefully bring you peace, increase your faith, and give you a different perspective and attitude as you get this glimpse into how cancer effects a person's life. The author has been blessed with a positive attitude along with an unconventional sense of humor. These two things, along with his unshakable faith, enabled him to traverse the pitfalls that come so that healing could be possible. Join him on this journey. He says to you as God said to him in the beginning, "Let's go for a walk together."<BR><BR>Endorsements: Dave's honest, practical and inspiring journey proves there is an optimism that is more than merely human. I am tempted to re-title it, FULLER FAITH (pun intended). It brought back warm memories of when he and Marilyn lovingly sat alongside me in a waiting room while my wife was in extensive surgery for a metastasized cancer. Their compassion for people is genuine and enduring. Romans 15:13 says, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Dave's life and words are an uplifting answer to that ancient prayer.Mike Weber, friend and pastor<BR> Dave's unique and vivid retelling from cancer diagnosis to "survivor" is both warm and inspiring! A gifted story teller, Dave walks the reader through the undulating emotional journey he faced-and we face-as cancer patients. Through it all Dave's story is a reminder that anything is possible-even in the most difficult of times and through the most difficult of circumstances-with faith and courage. This guide for surviving and building resilience while living with or preventing incurable lung cancer is an important book for all cancer, as it has uncovered the holy grail those who want to optimize their chances for cure have been seeking. Lung tumour causes mutations in cells. Typically, your body programs cells to die at a particular stage in their life cycle to avoid overgrowth. Malignancy overrides this training, leading to cells overdevelopment and multiplying when they shouldn't; the growth of cells leads to the introduction of tumours and the harmful effects of cancer. In lung cancer, this design of cell overgrowth occurs in the lungs (essential organs for breathing and gas exchange); doctors typically diagnose two lung cancer types, small cell, and non-small cell, depending on how they appear under a microscope. One is much more likely to have non-small cell lung malignancy than a low cell. However, anyone taking tobacco and constant contact with smoke can boost the likelihood of developing lungs tumour. Lungs cancer can also be improved if one has a brief history of contact with inhaled chemicals or other poisons; even if this contact with chemicals and other toxins was in the past, it might cause changes in lung cells that lead to tumour. This book will walk you through what to do to avoid lung cancer and also what to do to get better if you have lung cancer. It is filled with important information for everyone, whether struggling with cancer or not.

On the night of December 2, 1943, the Luftwaffe bombed a critical Allied port in Bari, Italy, sinking seventeen ships and killing over a thousand servicemen and hundreds of civilians. Caught in the surprise air raid was the John Harvey, an American Liberty ship carrying a top-secret cargo of 2,000 mustard bombs to be used in retaliation if the Germans resorted to gas warfare. When one young sailor after another began suddenly dying of mysterious symptoms, Lieutenant Colonel Stewart Alexander, a doctor and chemical weapons expert, was dispatched to investigate. He quickly diagnosed mustard gas exposure, but was overruled by British officials determined to cover up the presence of poison gas in the devastating naval disaster, which the press dubbed "little Pearl Harbor." Prime Minister Winston Churchill and General Dwight D. Eisenhower acted in concert to suppress the truth, insisting the censorship was necessitated by military security.Alexander defied British port officials and heroically persevered in his investigation. His final report on the Bari casualties was immediately classified, but not before his breakthrough observations about the toxic effects of mustard on white blood cells caught the attention of Colonel Cornelius P. Rhoads-a pioneering physician and research scientist as brilliant as he was arrogant and self-destructive-who recognized that the poison was both a killer and a cure, and ushered in a new era of cancer research led by the Sloan Kettering Institute. Meanwhile, the Bari incident remained cloaked in military secrecy, resulting in lost records, misinformation, and considerable confusion about how a deadly chemical weapon came to be tamed for medical use.Deeply researched and beautifully written, The Great Secret is the remarkable story of how horrific tragedy gave birth to medical triumph.
