Renowned sociologist and best-selling author Eric Klinenberg turns a year of devastation into a year of revelation in this wise, deeply researched and cathartic account of the pandemic.'A gripping, deeply moving account' SIDDHARTHA MUKHERJEE, author of The Song of the CellWhat unites us? What divides us? What do we value? Sociologist Eric Klinenberg had been studying what crises reveal about societies for over two decades when his home of New York became the deadliest hot spot of the global pandemic. In this book he tells the deeply reported stories of seven ordinary people trying to survive at the epicentre of the crisis, and combines them with data gathered from around the world to provide unprecedented insights into what societies are made of, why they come together or fall apart, and how they shape our lives.'Compellingly reveals what the pandemic laid bare about our culture, our institutions, and ourselves' Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted'A book that's at once intimate and far-ranging, that reveals the importance of social solidarity and also its fragility' Elizabeth Kolbert, author of The Sixth Extinction

The societal consequences of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are severe. They include declining health outcomes from longer illnesses, prolonged stays in hospital, loss of protection for patients undergoing medical procedures, increased health care expenditure, and increased mortality. They also include declining global food security as AMR damages farm animal health and crop yields. Despite AMR being a transboundary crisis, concerted global initiatives that effectively combat AMR have been few and far between.Steering Against Superbugs analyses ways to reduce barriers and create opportunities for coordination. The expert contributions in this volume offer specific and original insights about what global governance of AMR means, and ways to help solve AMR issues. They show that effective governance relies crucially on pursuing local level implementation of key policies, and equitable recognition of solutions across multiple sectors within countries, and across the Global North and South. With the COVID-19 pandemic, societies across the world have been reminded of the devastating consequences of not being able to effectively counter global health threats. AMR is arguably one of the most severe long-term threats to human, animal, and environmental health. There is momentum for global political action around novel and emerging disease threats and Steering Against Superbugs contributes with original and insightful research to inform ongoing and future debates.

This is the life-saving handbook of simple home remedies everyone should be aware of in light of COVID-19. Many people have died or are suffering long-term health challenges because they didn't have this information.
Starting with the most impactful, this book takes readers step-by-step through an easy-to-read list of DIY remedies that should be ready to go in every home. Many of these immune-boosting strategies are the same ones that helped some sanitariums to keep mortality rates at just over 1% during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918. This track record was especially remarkable considering that most general hospitals suffered mortality rates of closer to 30-40% during that tragic time.
This book is not about vaccinations, masks, supplements, social distancing, or quarantines. Rather, it focuses on the key strategies that, when implemented, will do much to build our personal immune systems. While there are no guarantees in this life, it is up to each of us to do all that we can to bolster our own defenses. In that way, we can be best prepared to fend off future viruses and pathogens that might come our way, bringing them to a speedy and powerful halt.

In my first book, Neuropsychiatric Comorbidities with HIV and Antiretroviral Therapy, I gave an overview of HIV, the comorbidities that couple with the disease itself, and antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV positive persons, whether newly diagnosed or those that are 2nd & 3rd and even 4th generation, long-term survivors. Within the following chapters in this book, my goal is to give persons afflicted with the disease and also for those who are either, a partner, family member, friend or loved one, inspiration and hope in dealing with this global pandemic. There is life after HIV!

This book focuses on the Chinese health impact induced by ambient temperature variation, especially the epidemiology-based exposure-response relationship with the mortality and morbidity from respiratory, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health among Chinese population.A great number of epidemiological studies have reported that ambient temperature is closely associated with a wide range of health outcomes, such as mortality, cardiovascular and respiratory events, adverse birth outcome, and some infectious diseases, such as dengue fever, malaria. Although a number of epidemiological studies in western countries have evaluated the adverse health effects of ambient temperature, the exposure-response relationship from these countries cannot simply be applied to the Chinese population due to the large differences in temperature profile, exposure pattern, as well as the population vulnerability. This book will provide up-to-date estimates of the magnitude of adverse health effects of ambient temperature in the Chinese population. We hope to provide readers with a comprehensive and organized body of information in the area of Ambient Temperature and health.

The invention of online techniques such as early warning outbreak detection has dramatically changed the action capacity and social organization of global infectious disease control. This book, one of the first to examine these transformations, is a stunning addition to the fields of global health, global news, surveillance, and globalization.

Before AIDS, the role of behavioral interventions in preventing transmission of sexually transmitted diseases was acknowledged in text books and journals but rarely promoted effectively in public health practice. Informed by a comprehensive knowledge of behavioral theory, intervention methods, and affected populations, this important book examines the central role of behavioral interventions in combating STDs. It provides a top-to-bottom review of current practice and offers real-world guidelines for program evaluation and improvement. This authoritative resource will surely influence public health practice and policy in an ever-evolving social climate.
