The societal consequences of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are severe. They include declining health outcomes from longer illnesses, prolonged stays in hospital, loss of protection for patients undergoing medical procedures, increased health care expenditure, and increased mortality. They also include declining global food security as AMR damages farm animal health and crop yields. Despite AMR being a transboundary crisis, concerted global initiatives that effectively combat AMR have been few and far between.Steering Against Superbugs analyses ways to reduce barriers and create opportunities for coordination. The expert contributions in this volume offer specific and original insights about what global governance of AMR means, and ways to help solve AMR issues. They show that effective governance relies crucially on pursuing local level implementation of key policies, and equitable recognition of solutions across multiple sectors within countries, and across the Global North and South. With the COVID-19 pandemic, societies across the world have been reminded of the devastating consequences of not being able to effectively counter global health threats. AMR is arguably one of the most severe long-term threats to human, animal, and environmental health. There is momentum for global political action around novel and emerging disease threats and Steering Against Superbugs contributes with original and insightful research to inform ongoing and future debates.

Recent discoveries in microbiology are hard to grasp for those unfamiliar with scientific jargon, and the research data can be overwhelming even for those working in other scientific fields. This book aims to remedy this situation by presenting the most interesting findings and current trends in microbiology in an easy-to-read and understandable format. The first part tells the story of the beginnings of microbiology itself and introduces the reader to the founders of this fascinating research discipline. The second part focuses on communication between microorganisms and how they organize themselves into fascinating microbial cities called "biofilms". The reader also learns how bacteria exchange genetic material - mechanisms that are the root of the emergence of multidrug-resistant superbugs, pathogens that pose a major burden to human health and our healthcare systems. The third part is devoted to the latest techniques being used by scientists to study, control, and manipulate microorganisms for our benefit. The final part links the first three parts together and highlights how infectious diseases, including coronaviruses, can be transmitted from animals to humans, how global warming is affecting emerging diseases, and provides information on the actions that need to be taken to get ahead of pathogenic microbes and future pandemics. This comprehensive, state-of-the-art book is intended for anyone interested in microbiology and epidemiology, from biology and biomedical students in schools and colleges, to patients suffering from infectious diseases who want to learn more about their condition. The concepts covered in this book contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Health and Well-Being.

In fast-paced everyday life, it is becoming increasingly important to find an antipole. The forest seems to be the perfect place for this - it offers balancing stimuli, health-promoting effects and its climate is proven to be effective on human health. This non-fiction book explains the background and facts about the effect of forest visits on a scientifically sound basis and sensitizes readers to the great health benefits of forest bathing (Shinrin-Yoku) and forest therapy. As an oasis of tranquility, the forest invites you to slow down, regenerate and draw new energy. Written for interested lay people - psychotherapists, doctors and other health professionals can read along. From the contents: How the forest and its climate affect us - How to discover and use the forest and its atmosphere for your health. The Authors: Prof. Dr. Dr. Angela Schuh and Gisela Immich, M.Sc., research the effects of forests and climate onhealth at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, Germany, and develop concepts for preventive forest use as well as forest therapy. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Waldtherapie - das Potenzial des Waldes für Ihre Gesundheit by Angela Schuh and Gisela Immich, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2019. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Autoimmunity, characterized by autoreactive lymphocytes and autoantibodies, is the consequence of a failure to discriminate between self and non-self, and autoimmune diseases are an increasing threat to people living in the industrialized countries. Autoimmune disorders are treatable, but not curable, and patients can face disability at later stages of the disease. Thus, there is a medical and economic need for new concepts and treatments in autoimmune disorders. New concepts and treatments can only be achieved by an interdisciplinary approach bringing together expertise, technologies, and clinical experience. The workshop focused on multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and type I diabetes, and discussed conventional drug therapies, gene therapy, cell and tissue transplantation therapies, and first treatments using blood stem cells for reprogramming the patients' immune system.
