LONGLISTED FOR FINANCIAL TIMES AND SCHRODERS BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD<BR><BR>A FINANCIAL TIMES BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR<BR><BR>'Excellent . . . reveals an insidious matrix of spying, deception, censorship and repression . . . compelling' Daily Telegraph<BR><BR>'A timely read . . . Chilling . . . Startling . . . A powerful case for more coordinated western intervention' Guardian<BR><BR>'Brilliant' Irish Sunday Independent<BR><BR> The remarkable story of China's two-decade quest for global dominance.<BR><BR>For several decades China's ascendancy has been supported by an astonishingly broad and deep portfolio of quiet coercion. Stories of the Chinese Communist Party's authoritarian reach are breathtaking - the gagging of sports stars and huge Western brands; Hollywood self-censorship; infrastructure deals in exchange for political loyalty in multilateral organizations; and of course - communications firms. But these are just the most visible examples.<BR><BR> Beijing Rules exposes the armoury of strategies with which China has exploited Western weakness to position itself as leader in the game of nations: tying market access to political acquiescence; punitive tariffs; online disinformation operations; use of private companies to spy on global users; leveraging vaccines for geopolitical gain; and the crushing of democracy in Hong Kong. With these weapons and dextrous manoeuvrings during the global pandemic, China positioned itself to take its place at the apex of world powers.<BR><BR> Bethany Allen, an internationally recognized investigator into China's covert power, shows Western institutions have bowed to and even enabled Beijing's coercion. As we come reeling out of a global pandemic and eyes are on a new war in Europe, this revealing analysis sounds the alarm about the most significant shift in the new world order, and what we must do to prevent the loss of freedoms we take for granted.

With fiscal equalization, debt brakes and special funds set to shape public budgets for decades to come, Thorsten Ingo Schmidt's textbook seeks to make public finance law accessible and explain the complicated regulations in their interaction between European, constitutional and administrative law. Starting from historical and systematic foundations, the author details financial constitutional law within the federal state, placing special emphasis on fiscal equalization. He then moves on to deal with the debt brake for the German government and its federal states, other budgetary principles, budgetary procedure itself, and state property law. These state regulations are then contrasted with the financial law of the municipalities and social security system, while a comparison with the financial law of the European Union serves to sharpen the view for the advantages and disadvantages of Germany's regulations. A presentation of legal protection in public finance law and a look towards the future of public finance law round off this comprehensive volume.

A blueprint for reimagining capitalism in the post-Covid era, from the Editor-in-Chief of MoneyWeek Merryn Somerset Webb<BR><BR>Should companies care about climate change? Should they be vanquishing the gender pay gap? Should they be advancing human rights in their supply chains? And if we think they should - can we, as ordinary people, bring about these sorts of changes?<BR><BR> The answer is, technically, yes. The majority of us now own shares in listed companies - whether that be through a stocks and shares ISA, a self-invested portfolio or a workplace pension scheme. What few people know is that every share comes with a vote in company decisions, over everything from executive pay to corporate strategy. The technology exists to allow us to vote - all we need to do is learn how to use it.<BR><BR> In Share Power, Merryn Somerset Webb, Editor-in-Chief of MoneyWeek, takes us deep into the world of corporate capitalism - from the privatization of state-owned companies in the 1980s to the financial crash of 2008 and the growth of the modern multinational - to show us how capitalism went wrong and how, with six simple recommendations, every one of us now has the power to make it work for us.

This book presents an authoritative guide to the principles and practice of participatory budgeting, providing a careful analysis of the potentials of participatory budgeting in strengthening inclusive and accountable governance as well as risks associated with interest group capture of participatory processes. For interested policy makers and practitioners, the book presents the ""nuts and bolts"" of participatory budgeting. It provides a regional survey of such practices worldwide and draws lessons from seven individual country case studies.

What is the truth about Britain's finances?<BR><BR> 'Read it, absorb it, and understand how the country works' Laura Kuenssberg<BR> 'Paul Johnson - the oracle of fiscal - has provided the perfect guide through this dense thicket of fiscal facts and fictions' Andy Haldane<BR> 'If you want to understand why crazy politics routinely trumps economic rationality in government choices, read this' Robert Peston<BR> 'Fire and passion, combined with the facts... Every politician should get a copy' Polly Toynbee<BR><BR> Paul Johnson and the enormously respected Institute for Fiscal Studies aim to hold Government to account - without which politicians will get away with their half-truths, elisions and dubious claims.<BR><BR> This is a forensic examination - by the man best placed to do so - of the £1 trillion it now costs to run the United Kingdom's economy. To follow the money. To provide an explanation, of where that money comes from and where it goes to, how that has changed and how it needs to change.<BR><BR> Government decisions determine the welfare of the poor and the elderly, the state of the health service, the effectiveness of our children's education, and how prepared we are for the future: whether that is a pandemic or global warming. As a society, we are a reflection of what the government spends.<BR><BR> Johnson looks at what happened following the financial crisis of 2008-09 and the austerity years that followed. He examines the way that the government  tackled the economy during Covid - when the UK budget shot up to over a trillion for the first time - and he analyses prospects for our future as we grapple with looming recession and the cost of living crisis.
