Thoreau war gerade in seinen Zwanzigern, wo er erste verschiedene Erfahrungen und Konfrontationen mit dem Tod und dem Sterben erleben sollte. Nachdem auch noch sein Bruder John mit 27 Jahren stirbt, entscheidet sich der Harvard-Absolvent damals am 4. Juli 1845 für zwei Jahre, sich in den Wald in eine Hütte am Waldensee zurückzuziehen, um sich mit den grossen Grundfragen des Lebens mit sich selbst zu konfrontieren. Sein Rückzug in die Stille, die heilende Umgebung der Natur, die Tiere, Pflanzen, Blumen und Bäume sollten es sein, die ihm das gaben, wonach er offenbar suchte. Es sollte ein kompromissloser Lebensweg werden, eines einstigen damaligen Aussteigers, der nichts in seinem Leben bereuen wollte und sich keine Vorwürfe am Lebensende machen wollte, nicht genügend intensiv gelebt zu haben. Wenn man Thoreau liest, glaubt man den Wind in den Bäumen zu spüren und die Atmosphäre des Waldes zu fühlen. Bis heute ist Walden ein grossartiger Klassiker der amerikanischen Literatur, dass kein schöneres und tieferes Buch vorzuweisen hat.
