Produktinformationen "The Histories"

The Histories is the foundational work of Western historical writing, in which Herodotus of Halicarnassus records the rise of the Persian Empire and the great conflicts between Greece and Persia in the fifth century BC. Composed in nine books, this sweeping narrative moves from mythic origins and ethnographic inquiry to the climactic struggles at Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea. Along the way, Herodotus gathers reports of distant lands-Egypt, Scythia, Lydia, Babylon-preserving traditions, customs, geography, and political developments with curiosity and narrative breadth.More than a chronicle of war, The Histories is an exploration of power, culture, memory, and fate. Herodotus examines the causes of imperial expansion, the fragility of human fortune, and the interplay between ambition and hubris. His method-collecting testimonies, weighing versions of events, and distinguishing between report and judgment-established the foundations of historical inquiry while retaining the vitality of epic storytelling. This SMK Books omnibus edition presents the complete and unabridged text of all nine books in a single volume, offering readers the full scope of Herodotus's inquiry into the ancient Mediterranean world.

How to Travel
A transporting anthology of ancient Greek and Roman travel writings that capture the thrill of exploration and discovery—from Europe to the Holy Land and Egypt to India

At long last, a travel guide to the ancient world for the modern tourist—written by the ancients themselves. How to Travel gathers classic texts from Greek and Roman writers to explore what today’s readers can learn from ancient encounters with unfamiliar peoples, places, and customs.

The Greek historian Herodotus (ca. 484–425 BCE) is one of the most famous travelers of antiquity. His Histories, which chronicle his and others’ encounters with foreign peoples and places, have fascinated readers for millennia, and have much to teach about the secrets of good travel. In How to Travel, Herodotus and Tacitus take us on tours of Central Asia, Egypt, and Germania, while pilgrims like Pausanias and the Christian nun Egeria guide us through Greece and the Holy Land. Readers are whisked away to India to experience the ways of forest-dwelling sages and to the far reaches of Africa. And as if Earth weren’t enough, the satirist Lucian takes us to the Moon. But this whirlwind tour of antiquity is more than a pleasure cruise. Seneca cautions travelers that, go as far as we may, we can never escape ourselves. Gratitude, Egeria says, is the traveler’s proper response for the privilege. And Homer reminds us that, ultimately, there’s no place like home.

Featuring vivid new translations, an inviting introduction, and the original Greek and Latin texts on facing pages, How to Travel captures the thrill of exploration and discovery—and how new experiences, fresh vistas, and foreign cultures can change the traveler.

The Histories
Herodotus is not only known as the `father of history', as Cicero called him, but also the father of ethnography; as well as charting the historical background to the Persian Wars, his curiosity also prompts frequent digression on the cultures of the peoples he introduces. While much of the information he gives has proved to be astonishingly accurate, he also entertains us with delightful tales of one-eyed men and gold-digging ants. This readable new translation is supplemented with expansive notes that provide readers the background that they need to appreciate the book in depth. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The history of Herodotus. (Volume I) A new English version, ed. with copious notes and appendices, illustrating the history and geography of Herodotus, from the most recent sources of information; and embodying the chief results, historical and ethnograph
Before history was a discipline, it was a journey. In Volume I of The History of Herodotus, that journey begins at the edges of the known world and moves towards the clash of empires. War, wonder, and witness meet. This classical history translation brings Herodotus into vivid English while preserving the cadence and curiosity that made him the father of history for readers of fifth century BC Greece and the wider ancient Mediterranean world. Volume I sets the method: enquiry, comparison, scepticism, delight. You see how geography shapes power, how travel yields testimony, and how rumour hardens into record. It is as pleasurable on a quiet evening as it is rigorous at the desk, too.Prepared as an annotated edition with notes, it is rich in scholarly commentary and appendices that clarify names, places, customs, and competing chronologies. The editor draws on cuneiform and hieroglyphic discovery to test traditions against inscriptions, making the work invaluable to ancient history researchers and a dependable classics students reference. Across its pages runs the essential greco-persian wars history, but also the broader ancient world ethnography: peoples, religions, economies, and landscapes observed with an unmatched appetite for detail.Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Set beside Thucydides' Peloponnesian War or Xenophon's Anabasis, Herodotus offers the indispensable starting point: how stories become sources, and how inquiry becomes history.
