Renascence and Other Poems (Esprios Classics)
Edna St. Vincent Millay (February 22, 1892 - October 19, 1950) was an American lyrical poet and playwright. Encouraged to read the classics at home, she was too rebellious to make a success of formal education, but she won poetry prizes from an early age, including the Pulitzer Prize in 1923, and went on to use verse as a medium for her feminist activism. She also wrote verse-dramas and a highly-praised opera The King's Henchman. Her novels appeared under the name Nancy Boyd, and she refused lucrative offers to publish them under her own name. Millay was a prominent social figure of New York City's Greenwich Village, just as it was becoming known as a bohemian writer's colony.

"Eines Tages - eines Tages - " Mit diesem Einverständnis schließt die Dichterin das Tagebuch, das sie kurz vor ihrem Tod im Jahre 1950 geschrieben haben dürfte. Er erinnert uns daran, daß die 16-jährige Schülerin Edna die Gewohnheit hatte, nach der Hausarbeit mit ihrem Tagebuch zu disputieren und dabei ihr Lyrisches Ich zu erfinden, um sich mühelos darin einzuleben. Drei, vier Jahre später mauserte sie sich zur Verfasserin des erstaunlichen Langgedichts Renascence, das sie 1912 schlagartig bekannt machen und mit einem Stipendium für das renommierte Vassar College beehren sollte. Viele Motive dieses berühmten Erstlings - Lebensskepsis, Tod, Apfelbäume - tauchen im Journal wieder auf, andere - Blaubart etwa, Philosophien, ist & ist nicht - erinnern an spätere Arbeiten. Sie sind auf einen bemerkenswert leisen satirisch/ironischen Ton gestimmt - Todeserwartung in Knittelversen -, deren Rhythmik und sprachliche Gestik den Übersetzer gereizt hat, in der deutschen Umgangssprache nach Analogien Ausschau zu halten.

Kompromißloser Freiheitsdrang, Rebellion gegen das Establishment, gegen weltliche und religiöse Autoritäten und gesellschaftliche Konventionen, bringen in Millays Leben ein hohes Maß jener Formlosigkeit, der ihr Dichten als Ordnungskraft beikommen will. Sie ging hetero- und homosexuelle Verbindungen ein, in denen sich Sexualität, emotionale Zuneigung und intellektuelle und dichterische Verbundenheit auf komplexe Weisen überlagern konnten. Von ihrem Ehemann ist zu Millays Affären die Aussage überliefert, er toleriere alle Freiheiten, die sich seine Frau nähme, solange diese ihrer dichterischen Kreativität nicht abträglich seien. Mindestens so wichtig wie die Weite, Unkonventionalität und Intensität der Erfahrung war Millay deren Überführung in gut gemachte Gedichte. Dem Mentor Arthur David Ficke antwortet sie jedoch irritiert auf die Anfrage, ob eine Zeile aus Renascence literarischen Ursprungs sei: 'I never get anything from a book.' Wie T.S. Eliot es im Essay Tradition and the Individual Talent vom Dichter seiner Zeit fordert, hat sie die literarischen Werke der Vergangenheit nicht vor sich auf dem Schreibtisch liegen, sie hat sie 'in ihren Knochen'. Bilder von Robert Herrick, Reimklänge von Marvell und Tennyson, emotionale und argumentative Rhythmen von Renaissance-Sonetten hat sie der eigenen Imagination ebenso anverwandelt wie das Lokalkolorit und das Alltagsidiom ihrer neuenglischen Heimat. Das Ergebnis ist eine Dichtung, die mit einer unverkennbaren persönlichen Stimme spricht und im Ganzen wie im Detail dem Leser zumeist unmittelbar verständlich ist, die sich aber zugleich dem traditionsbewußten Lesen auf weite literarische Welten hin öffnen kann.
