Small Living. Innovative Dwellings for Affordability and Sustainability
In recent decades demographic shifts have significantlyinfluenced young peoples' residential preference.Due to the rise of single-person households, smaller family sizes, and the desire for lower maintenanceand utility costs, many young individualsare choosing to live in smaller, efficient spaces inproximity to work and urban amenities. Thesechanges have led to an increase demand for multi-functional, space-efficient designs. As people's daily routines and expectationsevolve, the design of living spaces must adapt accordingly. The need for multifunctional rooms hasbecome apparent; a living room that seamlesslytransitions into a home office represents just oneof the many adaptations that modern dwellers require.Architects, interior designers, and homebuildersare responding with innovative solutionslike convertible furniture, built-in storage, andopen-plan layouts that facilitate a compact butcomfortable living environment. An often-discussed notion in design and constructionis sustainability. Its origin and widespreaduse of the term sustainable development can beattributed to events and circumstances that occurredseveral decades ago. The 1992 United NationsConference on the Human Environment inStockholm addressed concerns regarding humanity'spotential overuse of the earth's 'carrying capacity'.As people's awareness of protecting our livingenvironment increases, the choice of smallerhomes is becoming a more common and environmentallyresponsible decision. This shift is drivenby the need to reduce resource consumption, assmaller homes require fewer materials for construction, maintenance, and repairs. Moreover, smallerhomes are inherently more energy-efficient due totheir reduced space, which requires less energy forheating and cooling. Additionally, the smaller footprintmeans using less land per dwelling unit.

The Grow Home
With economic restructuring, demographic shifts, and lifestyle changes, the traditional family - working father, stay-at-home mother, two to three children - is no longer the norm and the need for smaller homes at moderate cost has skyrocketed. The first prototype of the Grow Home was built on the campus of McGill University in 1990 and more than one thousand units were built across North America and Europe in the first year alone. In this illustrated guide, Friedman describes the background, conception, and construction of these modest (14" x 36") homes. He details their construction for prospective owners, builders, and architects, showing how past and contemporary precedents have been transformed and how the first versions were adapted by the building industry. Visits to completed Grow Homes shed light on why such homes were purchased and the process by which they "grew." Friedman also shows how the design has been adapted for prefabrication to meet the needs of the developing world. He describes the contribution that small-unit design makes to saving valuable natural resources and shares his experiences in planning communities based on the Grow Home. The Grow Home reveals the development and history of a concept that revolutionizes the home and building industry, has been translated into over 10,000 housing units, and has received, among many accolades, the United Nations World Habitat Award.
