The Kingdom of Dahomey, a city-state in the early 1600s, became a powerful nation in West Africa two hundred years later. Its kings were known for their expansion plans and application of dualism, where all male roles had female counterparts. This gave rise to the strong influence of women as administrators, as well as elephant huntresses, palace guards, and finally, the famed warrioresses. Dahomey's kings relied on the fierce and fearless warrioresses, known as the agoji, to defend the nation until the end of the nineteenth century. King Béhanzin and his elite agoji forces resisted French encroachment in the region until they were ultimately overpowered by the opponent's superior weapons. Dahomey became a French colony, but the contribution of the women defenders remains etched in national history.

She created the National Association of Business Women to teach women how to earn an income. Through the Joyce Banda Foundation, she provides access to education and other programs that assist women, girls, and the youth. In public service roles as a government minister, the first woman Vice President, and President of Malawi, she continued her fight for women and girls to be treated equally as men and boys. Joyce's life experiences have influenced many of the issues that she has dedicated her life to: education for children, safe and healthy pregnancies and births for mothers, and enabling women's economic capacity for better life choices. Since leaving political office, Joyce has traveled the country and the world over, still drawing attention to women and girls and how their needs may be addressed. Joyce's life lessons fuel her purpose of helping women and girls reach their full potential.
