"Der Fänger im Roggen" war J. D. Salingers erster Roman, mit dem er weltweit berühmt wurde.Holden Caulfield ist eine Kultfigur der amerikanischen Literatur. Er ist sechzehn Jahre alt und irrt durch New York, traurig, krank, verwirrt. Ein Schweizer Kritiker entdeckte, dass der Text verfälscht war; 'unanständige' Stellen waren getilgt, Flüche verkürzt, durch Auslassungspünktchen ersetzt oder weggelassen. Man befand sich in den 50er Jahren ... Der Diana Verlag verlor die Rechte, die Kiepenheuer & Witsch 1960 erwarb. Heinrich Böll überarbeitete und ergänzte die Schweizer Übersetzung. Unter dem Titel Der Fänger im Roggen, der sich auf ein Gedicht von Robert Burns bezieht, erschien 1962 die deutsche Ausgabe. Es begann der unglaubliche Erfolg dieses Romans. Die Übersetzung Eike Schönfelds zeigt die stilistischen Qualitäten des Romans in neuem Glanz, die raffinierte Sprache, die Kaskaden der Flüche, hinter denen Holden seine Verletzlichkeit verbirgt.
