Am 13. Juni 1872 sticht der Dreimaster Admiral Tegethoff von Bremerhaven aus in See. An Bord eine 24-köpfige Mannschaft unter dem Kommando von Julius Payer und Karl Weyprecht mit dem Ziel der Durchquerung des Polarmeers bis zum Pazifischen Ozean. Die spektakuläre Forschungsreise sollte als die 'österreichisch-ungarische Nordpolexpedition' in die Geschichte eingehen. Ein ehrgeiziges Abenteuer! Kaum aufgebrochen, droht das Unternehmen jedoch zu scheitern. Auf 76 Grad 22 Minuten nördlicher Breite wird das Schiff im Eis eingeschlossen und driftet gen Norden. 'Wir waren nicht mehr Entdecker, sondern unfreiwillige Passagiere des Eises', zeichnet Payer auf. Alle Träume und Hoffnungen waren buchstäblich auf Eis gelegt. Für die Besatzung beginnt eine lange Zeit unsäglicher Mühe und ein Kampf ums tägliche Überleben. 130 Tage in eisiger Dunkelheit! In ihrem Festgesetztsein beschließen Payer und Weyprecht, als sich wenigstens der Nebel ein wenig lichtet, das Land zu erforschen, das sich vor ihren Augen auftut. Sie stoßen auf die nördlichste Inselgruppe Eurasiens im Nordpolarmeer, die sie 'Kaiser Franz Joseph-Land' nennen.
