Akutagawa Ry¿nosuke wurde am 1. März 1892 in Tokyo geboren. 1916 beendete er ein Studium der Anglistik an der Universität Tokyo, anschließend unterrichtete er englische Sprache am Kolleg der Marine in Yokosuka südlich von Tokyo und war Mitarbeiter der Tageszeitung 'Osaka mainichi shinbun'. In seiner kurzen Schaffensperiode zwischen 1912 und 1927 bediente er sich einer Vielzahl literarischer Stilmittel und schuf Erzählungen, Bühnenstücke, Drehbücher, Prosaskizzen, Reiseberichte, Gedichte und Essays. Akutagawas Streben galt einer Symbiose von japanischen und westlichen literarischen Strömungen. Seine Werke sind geprägt von einem magischen Realismus, der auf fantastische Weise rationale, groteske und surrealistische Stilelemente miteinander verschmilzt. Am 24. Juli 1927 nahm sich Akutagawa Ry¿nosuke das Leben. Sein Freitod wurde von vielen Zeitgenossen als historische Zäsur betrachtet, markierte er doch das Ende einer Epoche der Hoffnung auf eine demokratische Zukunft für Japan. Der 1935 gestiftete bedeutendste japanische Literaturpreis trägt Akutagawas Namen.
