Auf der Fram ins Packeis: Sein größter Traum geht nicht in Erfüllung: 1893 bricht der Norweger und spätere Friedensnobelpreisträger Fridtjof Nansen mit einem eigens dafür gebauten Schiff zur Eroberung des Nordpols auf und kehrt drei Jahre später in die Heimat zurück, ohne den Nordpol je betreten zu haben. Seine Expedition macht ihn dennoch über Nacht weit über die Grenzen seines Landes hinaus bekannt, denn seine abenteuerliche Polarfahrt sprengt die Vorstellungen des bis dato für möglich Gehaltenen. Heute lassen Forscher ihr Schiff, die Polarstern, nach Nansens Vorbild auf dem Meer vom Eis umschließen, um auf ihrer Mission zu neuen Erkenntnissen zu gelangen, und nach Nansen benannte Kreuzfahrtschiffe bringen Reisende in arktische Gefilde. Von Nansen stammt der Ausspruch, den Willy Brandt anlässlich des an ihn verliehenen Friedensnobelpreises zitierte: 'Beeilt euch zu handeln, bevor es zu spät ist zu bereuen.'

First published in English in 1890, this book by Norwegian explorer and scientist Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) recounts the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, an expedition that took two months. Learning from previous failed attempts, Nansen suggested crossing from the uninhabited east to the inhabited west of Greenland, an innovation that proved successful. Nansen's account was translated by Hubert Majendie Gepp and includes an introduction written by the secretary of the Royal Geographical Society. Volume 2 begins with the party setting out for the west, and includes lextensive descriptions of the climate and encounters with Inuit peoples. The book closes with the party reaching the west coast and journeying home. Volume 2 also includes an appendix of the scientific discoveries of the expedition. Nansen, who later served as delegate to the League of Nations, was awarded the 1922 Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian endeavours.

I denne boken skildrer Fridtjof Nansen en lengre reise som han gjorde i Sibir i 1913 etter invitasjon fra russiske myndigheter. I kjølvannet av første verdenskrig kom han til å engasjere seg sterkt for forholdene i Russland. Jonas Lied, som organiserte reisen fra Norge til Sibir, hadde stiftet Det sibirske kompani for å drive handel og industri i Sibir og grunnla blant annet et sagbruk i Lesosibirsk ved Jenisej som sies å være verdens største. Nansen reiste gjennom Ishavet til munningen av Jenisej, opp denne elven til Krasnojarsk og med jernbanen frem og tilbake til Vladivostok. I dag er Fridtjof Nansen en av Krasnojarsk største helter og fortsatt høyst levende i folks minne. Boken er en del av Nansen-serien Fra Svalbard til Kaukasus, tredje bind.
